'Can you believe it!' Belle exclaimed loudly and dramatically entering the library of the family home - the paper in hand. Her father having passed it over to her after Breakfast. 'The muggle Primeminister Gladstone and his liberals are going to try and bring about home rule for Ireland!', with a dramatic flair she slapped the paper the Dublin edition of The muggle Times newspaper onto the table, its headline and Gladstone's grim face staring up at them.
The brunette in her neat blue gingham day dress and her hair neatly arranged by the senior house maid ministrations, flopped down on one of the equisite couches in the main drawing room, taking a spot near the windows, that overlooked the houses palatial lawns and the woods beyond. Her usual seat.
'A muggle Parliment sitting in Dublin!' she exclaimed, her voice taking on a dreamy and far away tone, as though announcing Santa Clause was coming tomorrow or a knight in shining army coming to whisk her away. 'Wouldn't that be exciting! - MP's from Ireland, sitting in an Irish Parliment - perhaps Papa should go out for it, if it passes!'

The book Oz had been reading actually was fairly engrossing, but the entrance of a sibling shook him back to the present. Say what you would about the Dempseys, but they certainly knew how to draw attention in a room. He put a bookmark in his book but didn't close it, and considered the idea of an Irish Muggle parliament.
"I don't know. Sounds dull," he pronounced. He knew very little about the workings of the government in any capacity, but he didn't imagine that whatever parliament did all day was very well aligned with the whims of a poet. Then again, their parents had always been eccentric. Perhaps Eamon Dempsey would consider going out for a parliament seat on a whim, just to see what Muggles were doing with the country. Maybe Oz would even consider it. He was probably too young for parliament now, but by the time whatever Christabel was reading about in the paper actually came to pass he might not be.
"Don't hold your breath on the magical government following suit, in any case," he continued with a shrug. Again, he knew little of politics, because he cared little to try and follow them, but the Ministry of Magic didn't strike him as the sort of place eager to cede its authority to anyone else.

Belle rolled her eyes at her brothers pronouncement 'In the order* last week, there was rather a heated debate about it - if Ireland could be trusted to govern herself.' her scoffing tone ought to have told her brother what she felt about the condescension that was encapsulated by the question of the countries ability to self govern. The rather casual discussion had almost come to blows when a certain Irish muggle writer had taken exception to being told that Irish people were incapable of the depth of thought required to govern themselves.
'A Ministry does not listen to the will of the people, is it really democracy? she retorted, with a touch more vitriol in her voice than she had perhaps intended. 'Some would say that if the Ministry does not listen to it's people - it should be made to.' she liked Ross well enough, he seemed an even spirited sort, and without the acidic disdain for the Irish that marked some British politicians in the higher ranks. She could not imagine the sort of rebellion in the streets of Hogsmeade like that of the Fenians or the Phoenix Park attacks.
'I think Papa would make an excellent ambassador for the county, if people in Dublin forget that life in Ireland exists beyond Rathcoole, do you think London considers us at all?' she gestured to the window and gestured to the world outside of their window, in what she assumed was the vague direction of Dublin, more than 200km away.
*Hermetic order of the Golden dawn is a real life 'secret' order of muggles who think they can do magic- its mostly full of artists and writers - lots of Irish ones exploring celtic mysticism.

Oz looked up with interest at Christabel's revolutionary inclinations. Of all his younger siblings he wouldn't have expected her to be the sort to take up arms against the magical government (at least, not while she was still presumably looking for a husband in society). He wouldn't have necessarily said that he disapproved, though he also wasn't keen to join the mobs himself if it came down to it. It sounded like difficult and violent work; he couldn't be bothered.
"Well, its people are mostly English," he pointed out. He didn't know exact population numbers, but one didn't have to be a statistician to know that the English outnumbered the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh — probably put together. The Muggles certainly did, and he would have been surprised to hear that any of the demographics had a significantly larger portion of magical residents than any other. "And I'm sure they don't care one way or another about an Irish parliament. Anyway — maybe some of us like being unconsidered," he pointed out with a shrug. "At the moment I only have anything to do with the Ministry when I need them for something, and I think I greatly prefer it to them nosing about my business."

It was all well and good for a man to advocate for the status quo - especially a man like ozy - a rich well to do gentleman with property, autonomy and the vote.
'Well at least if we are on difference sides we are both covered' she jibed. 'If we fail you can use all of your money to get me out of jail, and I'll look after your children - I promise I wont tell them Monsters will eat them - which you know Propyria will' she stood from her seat and went to the side table and poured herself a whiskey 'and if we win I'll make sure you won't get guillotined.' she cocked her head and gave a small smile.
She joked about it, but she hadn't resigned herself to spinsterhood just yet - but she was far too aware of the fact that time was quickly slipping away from her and that as this year progressed, her future as the spinster aunt -cum governess to the sprogs that Ozy would spawn, who would likely be as satisfied with the status quo as their father

Oz made a show of turning his attention back to his book. "I don't have children," he pointed out dryly. "I would have thought you observant enough to have noticed." Neither he nor Sina were particularly interested in children, though of course they both knew better than to advertise such things. He'd expected when he married that he wouldn't need them; with so many siblings he really ought to have his choice of nieces and nephews to pass the estate on to whenever he was done with it. At the rate his siblings were going, though... well, he and Sina might have to resign themselves to an infant at some point. Maybe. In the meantime he certainly didn't want to go planning for their eventual education at the hands of one or the other of his spinster sisters.
"Endymion would be a better choice to bail you out of jail, anyway," he said with a shrug. "He might keep it from mother. I don't think I'd manage it. But please do spare a thought for my poor neck all the same, should you ever find yourself in a position to decide its fate," he continued with a chuckle.

'yet' Belle pronounced - he was an eldest son, and although there were other Dempsey boys, Ozzy was the one most likely in Belles view to end up a 'conventional' member of society. Endy and Don seemed the ones likely to be voted 'most like to die from Veela Syphilis' and 'most likely to die in a duel' respectively. Despite his rather unconventional choice of marriage partners, deep down Chris was sure that her brother would knuckle down and do his duty for God and Ireland at some point before too long. Their mother would surely begin her chirping for grandchildren before too much longer. And most new better than to set their will against Lowri Dempsey's.
Not that she had entirely resigned herself to spinsterhood- but she was tainted, mostly by her darling sisters gloomy nature, and the assumption by many that she was of a similar disposition, when she was the opposite. Porphyria was all stately melancholia. Chris imagined that her sister should like nothing better than to be driven from the house in a rain storm to get consumption on the moors, and die in a fit of low spirits. Belle was of a different passion - human life, even those of wizards, were short and to be filled with every passion that could possibly be enjoyed. She was loosing hope, a little, it was perhaps fuelling her revolutionary spirit 'Well it is likely that I shall never children and if convention is not going to be my lot, then revolution might as well be - mother shall simply have to resign herself to that' she quipped I am she added internally, biting back the comment and the small pang of bitterness that accompanied it.

Oz glanced up at his sister skeptically. "You ought to open with that the next time you're talking to an eligible gentleman at a ball," he remarked. "'Marry me or I may be forced to overthrow the British government.' It may be an unconventional tactic, but you never know until you try."
She may not appreciate the dry wit, but Ozy didn't have much else to contribute to a conversation about her bid for conventionality. She certainly didn't want his advice when it came to romance.

'Perhaps I shall' she retorted and swung her legs down from the chaise, her booted feet taking her weight as she pushed up to stand in the middle of the carpeted living room floor. 'Good knows coquettish flattery hasn't worked for me to date - might as well try something new' she laughed darkly.
She retrieved the paper from the coffee table were it had ended up. 'and on that note I'm off to prepare for my parlimentary campaign - when I'm the first lady prime minister of Ireland I shall remember you in my commencement speech.' she flipped her hair and headed for the door. 'Later darling brother, for Ireland the future!' she called over her shoulder, not looking back but waving the paper like a battle flag.
Wrap?
