Just Roll With It: A Guide
The aim of the game is to have fun and hopefully springboard some new relationships and plots. Here's what you need to know:
- This is a rapidfire thread - short and sweet posts are preferred to keep things moving!
- There is a maximum of five characters per thread (played by five different members).
- I will start the thread and give you your premise which I'll design around the characters I need to accommodate. The date will default to the RL date unless there's a recent event that'll work nicely. Posting order is first come first serve for the first round and then that will be the order for the duration of the thread.
- With each post you write, you roll one d100 in the room of requirement thread on discord and make a note of the number at the bottom of your post. You can roll a d100 elsewhere but it's nice and easy to do on discord and you can't lose your number.
- After you've posted with your dice roll, I will message you privately and ask if you want a mild, zesty, or extreme prompt and then give you your result which you must use in your next post.
For example: 'Your character finds a mushroom'. You can do whatever you like with that prompt - you can decide that they see a mushroom engraved on a table, you can decide they found a real mushroom and they ate it, didn't eat it, threw it at someone, walked away from it. It doesn't matter, be as creative or as literal as you want to be. - You have 15 minutes from being tagged to post OR 20 minutes if you've acknowledged the person who tagged you so we know you're working on it. If there's no sign of life after 15 minutes you will be skipped. If you check in before the person who's taken your spot is finished then you will go next. This also means you need to make sure you tag the next person promptly so we can keep momentum going. I'll try to keep on top of it where I can but I will be multi-tasking with ADHD.
- The prompts are secret, let everyone wonder how much of your post is prompted and how much is you. You can reveal all if you want when the thread wraps!
- You'll need to be okay with a small amount of powerplay but you do have full flexibility of interpretation, some prompts are more flexible than others but I've done my best to make them as adaptable as possible.
- Everyone gets one re-roll per thread. If you use up your re-roll and later get something you don't think you can work with, I'll help you figure out some creative options and if it's just not going to work I may allow you another re-roll - I don't want to give out too many re-rolls because it undermines the spirit of it, but I'm also aware that if you get a prompt that you're never going to be comfortable with then you're not going to be having fun if I insist you do it anyway or drop out. These prompts also haven't been looked over by anyone else, not even staff, so there's a good chance some of them will need replacing anyway.
- While I will be giving you a prompt and many of these prompts might dominate your post, some are more passive and you're never restricted to only writing that. Your post doesn't have to revolve around your prompt, it can be a passing mention and it doesn't matter if the others characters don't acknowledge your prompt action.
- I now have 100 unique prompts for each tier and every time I run this I'll be shuffling the order so the numbers never stay the same between games.
- *Death?! If you roll the same number five times in one thread, much like doubles in monopoly, you go straight to jail and do not pass go. Except jail here means 6 feet underground. A couple people rolled the same number twice so I've upped the threshold from three to five which ought to be nigh on impossible.
Here's the first test thread! (Vanilla) This used the original system of two types of thread - vanilla and spicy - where the prompts were very mixed but a spicy thread would've offered more extreme consequences where vanilla had plenty of chaos but nothing explicitly life-changing. There also wasn't a time limit or structured thread prompt.
The second experiment can get as spicy as you like, although I'm calling it extreme for the moment so I can call medium 'zesty' without it being unclear which level is which. I'm still workshopping names. If you'd like to be in the second test thread, I'm hoping to run it sometime this week (not Friday). The last one started at 11pm GMT and took roughly 5 hours but with the new time limit and more structured thread premise I expect to knock off at least an hour. In the future I may run a more open-ended longer form version but for now I'd like to see how expedient I can get it in the right conditions because we're all busy people and coordinating a group of people in different countries for an extended period of time isn't easy. For the second thread I'd like to start it a lot earlier to allow for people in other timezones to take part but ultimately it's going to depend on who's interested and when they're free. If I have more than 5 people show interest, I will prioritize anyone who didn't take part the first time.
If you'd like to register your interest, please fill out the updated form below! This is not a binding contract and please post even if 5 people got there first, it's really helpful going forward to know how many people would take part if they could.
Code:
Character: @""
Location Restrictions: (Personal to your character, not the obvious like women in men's clubs, UC characters in the slums etc.)
Contact Preference: Discord DM/Board PM
Availability this week: Dates and times this week you could potentially take part (don't forget to state the timezone, bonus points if it's in GMT :3)
General availability: Days and time of day when you're often free enough to take part. This might help me in future set up a poll or something or if I try to start something at short notice I'll have a better idea of who to call on.
Thanks to Bee for this magnificent set <3
