Every little sound Ahn-Bo-ah made was always a delight to Jin, but now more than ever they were reminders that he was back to (semi) normal after being embodied by a figurative gwishin. Jin didn’t even want to think how shallow and empty his aein had looked yesterday when they’d first seen one another. He obviously hadn’t been eating or sleeping well, or doing much of anything except torturing himself, and a quick bath with one good meal would not undo months of anguish but— every little hum or smile or laugh was another step in the right direction. And Jin was perfectly content to help Ahn-Bo along however he could, but especially if it meant just laying with him and being close.

The answer that followed made Jin raise a brow. He hadn’t expected a full blown adventure to explore the local landmarks but… they should definitely get some fresh air at some point. Take a walk, maybe. But ‘just this’ was good enough for now. (Maybe after he used the restroom.) Smiling brightly as Ahn-Bo tugged him closer, Jin hummed. “Just this is nice,” he agreed. At some point they should probably eat too, but if Bo-ah wasn’t hankering, Jin certainly wasn’t going to press him. He wasn’t starving either. “I like… just taking care of you,” he admitted with a slight flush. (It hadn’t sounded so stupid in his head as it did aloud.) Moving one hand to tug Ahn-Bo’s own towards him though, Jin traced the thread he’d knotted there appreciatively. “It looks like it worked,” he smiled, nodding at the thread. “Did you sleep alright?” Perhaps it was a little belated to ask the question, but he didn’t mean it as a mere pleasantry. Jin was actually curious to know. He meant it that he liked looking after Bo-ah. Honestly, if he could have spent the rest of his days just fussing and following, he’d have been perfectly alright with that. And maybe, now, he’d have to— to some degree. (Not that he was particularly pleased that it had to be in this way.)

Jin’s agreement was easy enough. That is how they would spend the day then, cuddled up in bed. It was a nice change being able to think about the hours ahead of him without dread or emptiness. It would be a good day today because he was with Jin-a. That’s all he needed, really. Although now that he had been awake for a bit, the other necessity was more prevalent. He didn’t particularly want to tell his friend to just walk away from the cave a bit and pick a spot to use as the restroom… but maybe it was obvious already? Given his living conditions and all?

The trail of embarrassed thinking was interrupted by the vampire’s confession. His heart skipped a beat, the corner of his mouth quirking the slightest bit. ”Oh?” was all he had had a chance to respond with before his aein pressed on, the slight flush giving his own embarrassment away. Ahn-Bo would have liked to explore that topic in far more detail—there had been many times where he’d taken care of Jin-a over the years. Subtly, of course. Like the warming spell for the scarf he’d given (and allowed Jin to think he’d stolen for his own.) Bringing little gifts back for him whenever they returned from a holiday. Not that Jin-a hadn’t returned the care. He’d done that tenfold. But it had never been like this… they’d never had the opportunity at Maho.

His gaze fell to the thread in question, softening at the hopefulness he’d seen in Jin’s expression. ”Better than I have been,” he affirmed. It hadn’t been a perfect night’s sleep, but it hadn’t been full of nightmares. That he could remember, at least. But it wasn’t because of some silly string that had been tied around his wrist (sweet as the sentiment was.) ”Because you were here with me.” And then, because he knew his cheeks would pinken right along with the vampire’s, he asked, ”How did you sleep?”

The prompt to elaborate indicated curiosity at his statement and Jin flushed warmer. It felt silly to admit aloud, but he was comforted by the fact that Ahn-Bo smiled about it. He’d never realized before, but he always felt more at ease when he knew for certain that the handsome quidditch player was taken care of: full belly, sleeping properly, no aches and pains, emotionally balanced. He hadn’t had a plethora of opportunities to influence most of those things at Majo, but wherever he did Jin had always done his best to assist. Bo-ah too, in return, and it had just become their way. Now though, with everything out of balance, he realized how useful he felt setting things back to rights. At least the easy, mundane things; the rest would take time. “Ne,” Jin confirmed lightly. (He’d have done well in the apothecary, he realized, and the ache in that thought made his chest hurt.)

Brushing past it quickly, Jin pulled Bo-ah’s hand towards him and smiled about the thread. He was glad to hear that Ahn-Bo was sleeping better than before. He did feel the warmth in his cheeks heat a bit at the reason, but it was a comfortable, appreciative blush and Jin was all the more pleased at the mirror of it on Ahn-Bo’s own face. “I slept well,” Jin nodded. “I think that was the first time I’ve slept through the night in awhile,” he admitted. “Also because you were here.” His fingers settled on the thread unconsciously as if determined to hold Ahn-Bo close. The fear that he could slip away at any moment had not seemed to pass overnight and Jin wasn’t willing to take any chances. He’d never imagined how easy (or how horrendously painful) losing Ahn-Bo once could be; he certainly didn’t know what he’d do if he had to go through it again, unprepared.

But that was as far as his clinginess managed to go because the need to get up was starting to nag. Jin frowned and rolled over onto his back. (If he had to go, he couldn’t imagine what pressing down on Ahn-Bo’s bladder must be doing.) It felt vulgar to complain that he didn’t want to get up and relieve himself, so he bit back the sentiment and grabbed whatever over layers were closest within reach of the bedroll. His fingers snagged on one of Bo-ah’s borrowed ones. Draping it over his shoulders rather than bothering to dress, Jin forced himself up and outside to do his business with a little excuse that he’d be back.

Outside, the sun was starting to climb higher into the sky and the mountain was waking. Birds chirped and the sound of a stream burbled nearby. It was a relatively nice day out, even if it was sunny, because the trees provided ample shade for him to hide from the rays. Jin busied himself with what he needed to do some distance from the cave and then returned with a bit of a smile on his face. He clung to the sleeves of the outer layer still draped over his shoulders, but once back inside, he began to tidy up their dishes from the previous evening.

Bo-ah,” Jin hummed lightly as he did so. “We should go for a walk later. I want to see what herbs are growing nearby.” It was a curiosity more than any kind of real necessity, but movement would be important for his aein’s recovery. And while being curled up in this cave for the next three days in one another’s arms was likely, they still needed to diversify. At least a little.

He should have known Jin hadn’t slept well in his absence. If the roles had been reversed and his friend had disappeared (accompanied by death claims and mysteriously vague messages), Ahn-Bo would have been losing his mind.

He’d been too deep in his self loathing and grief to put much thought to it. Just another instance of his own selfishness harming those he cared about. There was nothing that could be done about it now. He could only make up for it moving forward. At least Jin had slept well this time, that was a start. He gave his hand a small squeeze, hoping that it communicated everything he wasn’t sure how to say.

They took turns doing their business outside the cave. His aein had a penchant for stealing his clothing and wearing them—and Ahn-Bo couldn’t help but feel a small sense of pride each time he did. It was as if Jin couldn’t bear to be apart, so he would just bring a piece of the wolf with him. He’d suggested they take a walk later with the excuse of herb hunting. Puttering around the forest after he’d done so aimlessly for weeks now didn’t sound especially appealing. But Jin-a had used the shortened version of his name, and Ahn-Bo was helpless to against it. He murmured his agreement (perhaps a bit begrudgingly) and then stepped outside.

When Ahn-Bo returned, Jin had busied himself with tidying up. The dishes were done, and his bedroll was hanging across a low tree branch nearby—to air out, most likely. And now, he was finding proper places for all the random things that the wolf had left strewn about the cave.

“Jin-a, we’re only going to be here for a few more days.” He said with some amusement. Maybe this was just his friend’s way of continuing to take care of him?

Ahn-Bo’s reluctant grunt was still an agreement, so Jin settled it that they would be going herb hunting later. Fresh air would be good for them; spirits only knew when they’d get the opportunity again to go anywhere or do anything without being hyper-supervised. His stomach curled at the thought. To ease the guilt and delay the inevitable conversation they still needed to have, Jin set about tidying the rest of the cave while Ahn-Bo relieved himself. He aired the old bedroll Ha-Eun had brought over a tree branch outside; he stacked their dishes neat and tidily; he collected the letters he’d sent into a neat little pile and set them aside; and he was just in the midst of tidying a few other bits and bobs Ahn-Bo had laying around when the wolf toddled back in. Jin flashed him a look that seemed to say ‘yes…and?’ as if he’d misunderstood the implication that they’d be leaving. He hadn’t. He just felt more useful looking after them both than letting them exist in chaos. “Gwenchana,” he shrugged dismissively. “Now it’s done.”

With that, Jin gave a full-body stretch interlacing his fingers above his head and yawned. The layer he’d thrown over his shoulders slipped to the ground reminding him they were still in their bedclothes and he reluctantly picked it back up to hand to Ahn-Bo. It wasn’t going to get any warmer. Pulling on his own daytime attire, Jin settled into a crouch by the place they’d had a fire the evening prior and lit it before beginning to boil hot water for a pot of tea. “Are you hungry yet?” He asked, turning back to look at Ahn-Bo-ah. They’d been apart for almost fifteen whole minutes; Jin reached a hand in his direction needily.

Jin was unimpressed with his reminder. Ahn-Bo had always been on the messier side—but even this had been extreme for him. It was surprising that his friend had been able to wait as long as he had to clean up. The cave did feel less oppressive. He was immediately distracted by the sight of the vampire stretching. The hem of his — lifted to reveal a sliver of pale skin beneath. Embarrassingly, Ahn-Bo was unable to tear his eyes away. It wasn’t until Jin had lowered his arms and pushed the outer layer into his hands.

Once dressed, he tagged along next to Jin as he fussed about with what was bound to be their breakfast. Ahn-Bo gladly laced his fingers through the vampire’s and sat down next to him. “Ne, is there anything I can help with?” Not that he had much experience with cooking, but it felt lazy to just let Jin-a continue to wait on him.

After Jin replied and they were settled, his eyes drifted to the neat stack of unopened letters nearby. There were far more than he’d realized. “Jin-a,” he started hesitantly, meeting his gaze before sliding away. “Mianhe.”

As if it was a beacon of its own, Jin could feel Ahn-Bo’s gaze on him like a living thing. He relished in it for the most part, always pleased that he was the quidditch player’s center of attention when they’d been at school, and this time was no different. He didn’t know what had incited the dilated pupils in his aein’s gaze, but he grinned anyway.

With water boiling over the fire for tea, Jin set about preparing the rest of their breakfast one handed. He gathered together a few of the bowls and chopsticks he’d washed out and dug in his never-ending satchel for thier meal. He shook his head lightly at Ahn-Bo’s request to help. “Gomawo. There’s not much to do but heat it up,” he explained. “But you can wash the dishes again after if you’d like,” Jin snickered. He hated cleaning dirty dishes, even with magic.

As he made to remove the tea and pour water over a new set of dried herbs he’d arranged, Ahn-Bo seemed to look at something. Jin set the pot down and handed one cup to his friend, letting his gaze follow. Ah. The letters.

At first, Jin hadn’t known what to think when he’d received no response to his various queries. After a few days he’d grown frantic, sending more, before ultimately coming to his rather implicating decision a few weeks into his own angst. Upon seeing his aein yesterday then, obvious frustration had come to the surface and then just seeing the letters there, ignored, had settled with a small pang. But now… now Jin had seen first hand how Bo-ah was faring. And it was a lot easier to be upset with someone when one could not see or understand the struggles of that person actively. He gave his friend’s hand a small squeeze. “Gwenchana,” he responded again, this time more gently. “I know it’s been a difficult few months.

There really was nothing to apologize for. If anything, Jin should have been the one apologizing if the guilt in his stomach was any indication. Should he bring up Abeoji again? Jin debated. On the one hand, he had to eventually and they might as well get it over with than let it linger like a cloud these next few days; but on the other, Jin was worried something he said might change Ahn-Bo’s mind or cause them to argue and he just… he couldn’t bear it. Not yet. Not unless Ahn-Bo outright asked him about it.

Somehow he’d gotten roped into doing the dishes. It was a good thing he knew the incantation for it, having learned it from Jin way back during their first detention together. It had been for the baths at the bathhouse, but it would still apply wouldn’t it? If not, there was always the old fashioned way… Ahn-Bo resisted wrinkling his nose in distaste.

Jin wasn’t upset with him over the letters, though he had definitely been peeved about it last night. He’d tried to hide his reaction, but the wolf had caught a glimpse of it anyway. Maybe it didn’t bother the vampire anymore, but the guilt still niggled at him. He sipped the tea that had been handed to him. “Should I still read them?” Were there things in them he should know? Or was it mostly Jin being angry and threatening him?

Jin felt his cheeks heat at the question and he took a sip of his own tea. The letters that remained unopened were likely the ones from his frantic attempts at contact to figure out where and why and how Ahn-Bo-ah was doing. There wasn’t really much in them aside from laying bare how anxious he’d been in black and white. The half-vampire gave a little shrug. “If you want to,” he said quietly. “They’re a little repetitive I’m sure.” Not to mention frustrated and/or rude depending on the day. He’d been anxious, overtired, hungry, and stressed. It wasn’t a good combination for Jin sometimes. He flushed again and tugged Ahn-Bo closer by their joint hands. “But I’m also right here, so whatever they say can’t be nearly as interesting as the real thing.” He hummed, teasingly. With that, he pressed a quick kiss to Bo-ah’s shoulder and grinned.

Jin’s quiet response was reassuring. He truly seemed as if he didn’t care about them—and the teasing reminder had Ahn-Bo huffing a laugh. How did he always manage to be so adorable without even trying? “You’re right as always, aein.”

Between the pair of them, they’d manage to squeezed right up against each other. Jin hadn’t had to move very far to kiss his shoulder. Ahn-Bo leaned forward to kiss the vampire—completely forgetting that they both had fairly full cups of tea, which promptly spilled everywhere.

Blushing at the term of endearment, even though he’d been the one to bring it up, Jin resisted the urge to duck his gaze as a silly, lovesick smile stole over his features. Spirits, he adored this boy beside him. It was almost unfathomable how much. He welcome the sweet kiss that was pressed towards him almost as if Ahn-Bo had read his mind. Jin had every intention of communicating wordlessly how deliriously happy he was when the sudden lurch sent their (really very hot) tea spilling everywhere. Jin pulled back immediately with a soft yelp.

He dropped the blue and white porcelain cup onto the stone ground of the cave, shattering it as he nursed burnt fingers. It wasn’t an awful, searing pain, but it surprised him. Cursing quietly, he shook out his hand and gave Ahn-Bo a sheepish look. “Mianhe,” he mumbled. One wave of his left, non-burnt hand and the teacup was good as new. Jin set it to the side with caution. “Maybe we should eat first,” he offered, half teasingly and half seriously. It was still early in the day; they had all the time in the world to do nothing but kiss after filling their bellies.

Rearranging the dishes a bit, Jin served the jeon that had warmed over the stove. They still had a little bit of rice and jjigae left from the evening prior, so he portioned that out too. No use in wasting food. He handed Ahn-Bo a dish and some chopsticks, resisting the urge to feed him again. It was silly. He was a grown man and could (probably) feed himself.

Between Jin pulling back with a yelp of pain and the teacup shattering against the stone, Ahn-Bo had startled, sending his own cup to the floor. Luckily, it fell to his lap first and rolled down his leg. Although made a clinking sound, it hadn’t shattered. And then Jin was apologizing of all things, even though it had been Ahn-Bo who had caused jt. His voice was purposeful as he said, “Mianhe, that was my fault.”

Jin had breakfast ready in front of them shortly after. After an appreciative thank you, Ahn-Bo eyed his friend’s hand with concern. “How bad is it? Let me see.” While Jin-a was much more skilled at healing magic, the quidditch player had a fairly decent skill set with it. Most of his teammates did too. Quidditch wasn’t necessarily known for being a gentle sport.

In the end, the burns he had been concerned about didn’t look painful. The skin was only a few shades pinker than the typical hue of Jin’s blushes. Still, he couldn’t allow his own mistakes to mar the perfection that was Jin. He waved his hand and muttered a spell, and they were good as new. Satisfied with his handiwork, he kissed the healed spots for good measure and then sat back on his haunches.

The food was just as delicious as the evening meal’s had been. As they ate, he suddenly remembered that Ha-Eun had loved the jjigae the cook made. An unbidden image of the last time he’d seen her flashed into his head, horrific and gory. No longer hungry, he used his chopsticks in transfer his remaining jjigae to Jin’s bowl. “I’m still full from last night.” was his excuse, and then he set about ensuring the dishes were clean, yawning as he went.
