Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

Novice Hippogriff Race

Today's starting pistol does not prompt its racers to take off—no, it prompts them to mount the hippogriffs and then take off. On brooms, or even horses, this would not be a stumbling block, but hippogriffs are known to be proud creatures, and do not take slights lightly.

You approach your hippogriff, your riding attire rustling in the light breeze. How you do so—and whether or not you made an effort with the beast during yesterday's meet and greet—will have an early impact indeed upon your success.

Desi had thought this would be great fun and had taken some time to greet the hippogriff he would be riding the day before. He had been admittedly a little lax in it but at least had not seemed to overly offend the hippogriff. Now here they were once more.

Standing before the hippogriff, he bowed to it as the pistol went off. He made sure to keep his gaze lowered until the hippogriff either accepted or rejected him.

Recognizing you from your previous meeting, the hippogriff drops easily into her answering bow, allowing you opportunity to mount her. You're only just barely settled when she takes off at speed, forcing you to battle—or cajole—her for control lest you fall on your ass.

Desiderius had barely gotten on the hippogriff before it was hauling ass like it owed child support. "{Easy girl," he urged, gently caressing her neck in the hopes she would allow him to control the speed at which they were going. Not that going fast was bad but he would rather prefer it wait until they were in the air.

Owing to your good horsemanship, the beast settles quickly beneath you, and you work your way as one down the first length of the race.

Up ahead, you can see where ground meets water, and know it's time for the hippogriff to take off. This also means it is time for you not to fall off.
