One of the cheapest homeless shelters in Victorian London charged four pennies to sleep in a coffin. Which was... still better than sleeping upright against a rope? — Jordan / Lynn

I always say the things I shouldn’t
Oh what a shame my tongue’s not tied

Nothing. She thought of a different memory, the memory of walking into the girls dormitory for the first time and seeing her belongings at the foot of a bed that looked fit for royalty. She could hardly believe it was hers, she took a running leap onto it and buried her face in the sheets. It wasn't just about the bed though, it had been everything that had happened to her since she had woken up that morning up until that very moment. Expecto patronum!

Nicodemus had not produced even the airiest of wisps. This would not do at all. He concentrated a little harder and tried again. "Expecto patronum," he cast a little more firmly this time, with a little more oomph, if you will.

Paxton was pleased to have managed a wisp, even if it did not take any animal form. All he could do was try again. "Expecto patronum."

Nim tried his best to focus even harder on the memory he was using to attempt his patronus. "Expecto patronum," he cast, hoping he had done better this time around.

Gus moved through the classroom with a watchful eye, hands clasped loosely behind his back. Teaching the Patronus Charm was always a test of patience—not just for the students, but for him, too. He offered steady encouragement as the first attempts fizzled or fell short, reminding them that the memory fueling the spell didn’t have to be perfect, just personal – something that made them happy.

Ms. McFausty, Mr. Silente and Mr. Dursley had the same outcome as each other – nothing. Gus wasn’t surprised though, as many of their peers also weren’t having much luck. “Keep trying! I know you’re all capable.” He said to all them, giving them a nod of encouragement to try again.

Ms. Gamp and Ms. Escher were nearly there, although their spells fizzled out before the formation of a wisp. “Excellent work. Next time, I know you’ll do it.” He said to each of them. They were so close. He could feel it.

Mr. Black seemed to have latched on to be able to cast a wisp, as there it was again. He smiled at the Slytherin, pleased with the work he was doing. Mr. Fudge was able to join Mr. Black with being able to produce a wisp. “Mr. Fudge, good work!” Gus said to the Hufflepuff, turning to grin at him, too. This was turning out to be the most productive NEWT class yet in terms of being able to produce.

Lowering wisp to 15, 19 for a non-corporeal, and a 26 for a corporeal remain unchanged. Each posted attempt boosts your next attempt by one point. Please update Memory/info if your character switches to something new.

Another wisp. Sirius was starting to feel confident about attaining one, and really wanted to get it that last extra bit to be at least slightly more solid. He didn't expect to run into any dementors on tour, but it would still be good to have this spell in his back pocket for the trip. He nodded appreciatively at Fudge, who had also attained a wisp.

"Expecto patroum!"

It wasn't working. What happier memory did she have? She had to have something, surely? What happened if she'd never been happy enough? Did she have to give up on casting a patronus? No, there had to be something. She wracked her brain. Were faint memories of her parents enough? They didn't exactly seem happy memories though, they made her melancholy if anything. Her sorting had been exciting but that was over six years ago and spending the break with Polly seemed fresher and stronger...

Hesper looked across the room and saw Sirius hadn't conjured an animal yet. Oh. She chewed the inside of her lip. It couldn't possibly be a happier memory than going home with Polly, could it? It was worth a try, she was quickly beginning to think she had the most miserable life in the whole wizarding world. She started to focus on the memory and suddenly realized that she'd been staring at the back of Sirius' head. She hastily diverted her gaze to her wand. Expecto patronum!

Mr. Black was unable to produce another wisp – it seemed as if his luck has been transferred to Ms. Gamp who, with great effort produced not only a wisp, but the faint outline of a creature—shimmering, wavering, and unmistakably magnificent.

A unicorn began to take shape.

It was faceless, of course, and its hooves didn’t touch the ground, and its mane floated slowly around it. It rippled like small waves in the water, but then again it was non-corporeal so Gus didn’t expect it to form an animal that was entirely recognizable.

Gus turned toward her, wearing a large grin. “Ms. Gamp!” Was all he could say. “You’re almost there. You might be the first of your peers.” He could tell her all about the unicorn and what it means, although he’d save that for after class.

Paxton continued to do his absolute best. He focused hard on the happy memory he had conjured up. Had it perhaps dulled potency because things with Dorian had fizzled out? "Expecto patronum," he cast even whilst he was contemplating this.

Hesper gasped as something actually happened. Was that horse? She'd thought for a moment that she'd seen a horn but it seemed to vanish into indistinct mist again before she could believe it. At the professor's words she couldn't help but glance towards Sirius. She had to bite back a smirk as she realized she'd overtaken him. Then she remembered how she had and promptly looked away again in case he could somehow read her mind if he were to catch her eye. Not that it was an embarrassing memory to have chosen but the implications... The implications were unimportant, no one had to know, and if using that memory produce a corporal patronus before any of the seventh years then good. Expecto patronum! Hopefully this time she'd get to see it properly.

Neither of them were able to get a wisp this time around, but it was alright. Class was coming to a close, anyway. At least a few of them had been able to produce some form of patronus. Gus clapped his hands. "Excellent work everyone. We'll try again tomorrow. Please don't be discouraged if you didn't produce anything today." Most of them would get it, eventually.
