Did You Know?

Calla,

Just wanted to let you know Harry and I made it to South Africa safely. The ship was actually a lot of fun, I quite enjoyed it, even though Harry didn’t.

It’s been really busy settling in, so I won’t bore you with the details, but I hope Splash is behaving. Alvin's first letter said she snuck off as soon as we left and I could only imagine that she went to the greenhouse, which is her favorite. Thanks again for agreeing to watch the cat, she really doesn't like Alvin very much for some reason and is constantly wandering off.

I hope you enjoy your summer!
Best,
Sloane

Sisse,

I should have told you before I left, but I wasn't sure how. I was invited to join a magizoology expedition to South Africa for the next six months. Harry and I have gone together, they needed healers too, and so we set out on the twenty-fourth on a ship. It was thankfully uneventful and I enjoyed the trip more than expected.

We're still busy settling, so nothing exciting to report, but I just wanted to let you know where I'll be, likely until Christmastime.

Wishing you the best this summer season, I know you'll be wonderful.
Best,
Sloane

Dearest Sloane,

I fear I have been an absolute failure to you as a friend. I apologize most profusely for the delay in your receiving this letter and I can only hope that this time it safely reaches your hand. When our family owl came back the first time, flustered and confused, looking as if it had been caught in a storm, my letter to you still in his claw I did not understand at first. I thought that perhaps something had come of you. But instead it appears the poor bird encountered a storm and was not able to deliver your letter. I had to use an owl from the post and I most assuredly hope he is able to bring this to you. Please know, that I never intended you to have to wait so long for word of me.

Your friend always,
Sisse

Dearest Sloane,

First and foremost thank God you have arrived safely. I hope all has been well since your first letter. I apologize most profusely for not responding to it at once, I hope as you read on you will understand why. Do know that I was so grateful to receive your letter and find that you were alright. I fear I would have been a mess had you not told me in any form. I wish you had felt as if you could come and tell me in person, but I can hardly hold that against, especially as the rest of this letter may shock you. Please do not think ill of me when you read this letter.

Last summer we spoke of a gentleman who was close to you and a prospective attachment I might form to him. I do not know if he spoke to you of the matter before you left but we were wrong in that regard. I will never be more than a friend to you when it comes to him. I believe I too may have been mistaken in my feelings and hopes of him and do not seek to lay the blame soley upon him. Please know that I wish him all the best in the future and that you are not to hold anything amount of sisterly affection back from him. I wish him happiness and hope with all my heart he finds it.

And yet it is not this piece of news that has delayed my letter. Please do not think too harshly of me once you hear my news.

The day before your letter arrived there was some excitement in our house. That is to say Lester and I are properly courting. Father has agreed to allow Lester a year to complete his training before we are to be engaged. I know this may seem sudden but I assure you I love Lester absolutely and completely, as he does I, and I believe I have for some time now.

I hope you will forgive me for not confiding in you, I confided in no one. I have found out years too late that sometimes one needs space and silence in such things. I wish I could have told that to my fourteen year old self. It might have saved you and I a great deal of trouble when we were girls. It would seem, dearest Sloane, that you were the wisest among us.

Please, even if you are angry with me, do tell me how you have been. I long to hear from you and I miss you terribly. It reminds me too much of that awful year. How is South Africa? Have you and Harry settled in? Henry asks me to send you his regards. We miss you here.

All my love, your friend,
Sisse

This letter was sent on the 19th, however, Sisse's owl got lost on the way and the letter was delayed and only reached Sloane on June 22, folded into the most recent letter is an earlier letter from Sisse.
