New Year, Old Curse
Stolen Artifact Results in Death, Distruction
Two men are dead and several individuals injured after a curse was activated in Knockturn Alley on New Year's Eve. Aurors were swift to arrive at the scene which witnesses describe as "an unexpected tornado of fatality". The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Quick and careful investigation has caused the Department of Magical Law Enforcement to identify the source of the curse as an iron talisman carried by one of the slain men which, based on reports and cautious inquiry, seems to have been triggered by sources unknown to create a spiral of what might have been a primitive killing curse.
An unnamed representative from the Department of Mysteries confirmed that the talismin was one of a number of items stolen from a shipment to the Minsitry of Magic in September. The artifacts originated from a Pictish site near Hogsmeade in Scotland, having been exhumed by both muggle and magical archaeologists last year. The case of the theft remains open, though aurors are hopeful that this latest development will lead to a quicker resolution.
"While tragic, this is the first major lead that we have had in the case since September's heist," noted auror Maeve Connolly.
Miss Connolly warns the public to be vigilant towards any unfamiliar heirlooms in the family attic, or trinkets they might acquire in the streets.
"After all, we should hate to see this happen to anyone else."
Those who come into contact with any suspicious artifacts are directed to contact both the Auror Office and the Department of Mysteries immediately and are warned not to touch anything of unknown origin.
