Dementors are known to wizardkind as one of the most foul creatures in existence. Not only are they known for their position as Azkaban prison's guards and their soul-sucking tendencies, but they are also known for being used in literature to depict unhappiness and despair. Little is known about what causes dementors to breed, but it is known that they do so away from society in the darkest, wettest places in Britain. They feed off the happiness around them, leaving their victims feeling as if they'll never be happy again.

There has been much controversy surrounding the use of dementors as Azkaban guards, with some saying their simple presence around the prison is torture to the prisoners within. With such dreariness surrounding the walls of the building, it's thought that dementors are the cause of many prisoners going "mad". And seeing that prisoners do get released, one could argue that the torture they endure can cause them to end up back in prison (or worse, an insane asylum) upon their release from the mental damage they suffer. Other have argued that the dementors are necessary to prevent dangerous prisoners from attempting to escape their cells, for the penalty for escaping in the dementor's kiss.
