    History: Childhood
Born to a normal halfblood family, Mordecai Gradgrind was the 3rd child of the Gradgrinds.  He was the second son but the first to survive beyond his 1st birthday.  He has an elder sister, and several younger siblings.  All of whom duly displayed magic and were raised in a relatively by a parade of nannies and strict tutors - the family spend some time in main land Europe, particularly around Germany in their early years as his father sought to develop extensive business connections in the area and did not want his family far from his severe and reproving gaze. As such Antonia, Mordecai and Josiah were all born in Germany, moving back to England, and establishing a home in Liverpool when Mordecai was 7.

His father was a self made man, and as such the home in Liverpool was always austere and utilitarian with little money spent on luxury and or frivolity, he believed that sparing the rod spoiled the child, as such physical punishment was seen as a cure for all ills and deviations, and the children were not allowed to read works of fiction.

Mordecai always resented that there was nothing to make him ‘special’ the pureblood children were distinguished by their designation, and the muggle borns, by their pioneering but as a half blood her always felt unexceptional.  Egged on by a grandfather who often told stories of the ills of blood mixing Mordecai grew disdainful of those whose lineage was not entirely human.

    School Years
Mordecai received his Hogwarts letter but, like his sister he was sent to Durmstrang, as their father believed that the harsher climate, fewer luxuries and more austere environment was more conducive to learning than the ‘luxury’ offered at Hogwarts.  He did well in school, and completed his OWL equivalents with good grades.  He returned to school to begin his NEWT equivalents but was expelled during his 6th year for fighting with another student who Mordecai believed to have slighted him, he badly cursed the young man, and was not permitted to complete his NEWT equivalents.  A tutor was hired to round out his magical education but he lacks formal qualifications.

While other young men were off on their grand tour, Mordecai was required to work with his father in the Linen Mills which formed the basis of the family fortunes.  It was grinding and difficult work in noise atmosphere.  It was far from the comfortable idleness of the men he considered friends, for while not physically working in the mills, he was expected to be in the factory when the men were at work, and the hours were long.

At an evening event organised for the families of mill owners he met Undine Notting, she was a pretty and pragmatic woman, raised in a similarly severe and austere household as Mordecai.  The woman was a born survivor and ambitious as all hell.  Mordecai was attracted immediately especially when she made no secret of pursuing him.  The pair married after a year of courtship, in a simple, and rather drab ceremony that cost almost no money.  The pair didn’t even buy new clothing for the wedding.

    After School
Mordecai’s professional life married the magical and the muggle, and he determined to become a physchologist, gaining a medical degree and studying in asylums all over England and Europe.  He became doctor in charge of a Bedlum hospital in Shropshire, and in private clinics tended magical Mental patients from all over England, for whom St. Mungos had offered no cure – mixing magic and muggle medicine to ‘cure’ certain ailments.  He joined the Society for Psychical Research as soon as it founded in 1882, and published extensively on Utilitarianism as a form of physcological treatment.  His primary focus on criminal and deviant inherency, caused by biology and the cures that can be found in Physical punishment, withholding and denial.  He believes that Cseare Lombrosos’s work in criminal Phrenology to be the singularly greatest work of scientific discourse ever written and takes the work very literally applying it to all areas of his life.

He has recently resigned his position in Bedlum, and moved back to London, believing that the magical community is faced with a major threat as a direct result of biological deviancy.  He is opening the Knockturn HalfBreed Hospital, Knockturn Asylum as it would be more accurately described in order to 'cure' half breeds of any traits that are deemed to be the result of their non-human ancestor. Using the site of the old Knockturn Debtors Prison, the asylum will only serve non-humans and thier families and it's methods are brutal and unforgiving processes of personality manipulation. However, Mordecai and many of his medical colleagues believe them to be effective techniques.
