Rebirth of a Tradition
Symbolic hatching of phoenix chick at Sunnstede Wyrd
Those in attendance at the closing of the revived Sunnstede Wyrd festivities yesterday, will remember the remarkable moment when the ceremonial removal of the Sunnstede Flame was interrupted by the discovery of a phoenix egg nestled in the center of the bonfire. The sudden appearance of the egg baffled all as no phoenix sightings had been reported. However, phoenixes are capable of apparation as well as flight and so this may be how the egg came to be there without anyone noticing. It is also possible that revellers were too distracted to notice a real phoenix with so many conjured likenesses of the creature adorning the area.
Regardless of how the egg came to be there, onlookers were shocked when it became apparent that the egg was hatching. It's hardly necessary to mention how rare it is to see a phoenix, let alone witness the true, first birth of one. A gentleman who witnessed the hatching commented that 'the atmosphere was otherwordly, everyone was silent'. Others who were in attendance had similar things to say, one witch going as far as to say it was a 'sign'. With the phoenix being a bird synonymous with rebirth and reincarnation, it does indeed seem portentous that one should hatch at the revival of such an ancient wizarding festival.
Proceedings were able to continue once the chick had hatched as only a portion of the Sunnstede Flame is needed and could be gathered from another region of the bonfire. Employees from the Ministry's Beat Division arrived shortly after to relocate the phoenix hatchling to a more suitable location so the bonfire could be extinguished. It is unknown where the chick has been relocated to at present, it seems as though it may become a symbol of success for the revival of Sunnstede Wyrd. Perhaps it will make a reappearance next year, for it seems likely that there will be a next year.
