This is more a Contest suggestion than an event, one geared to get unexpected pairings in threads. I've seen it done on many sites and it often works well. I don't know if it's been done here... other than it's not been done since I joined in February.
Basically its a random pairing of characters and a thread must be done to completion in a certain time frame to gain any rewards. People can volunteer up to 5 characters (or as much as players feel they can handle given timeframe to complete threads) and after a certain date, all signed up characters are randomly paired up. Players then can figure out a thread between themselves, or random scenarios could be generated as well.
Rewards would be based on number of completed threads within the set timeline (whether a weekend, week or month timeframe)
This could happen a few times a year perhaps, if people enjoy it.
