Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

Carriage Accident in London
Several Injured, Two Dead

Only a day after the beginning of the new year, a tragedy has struck the London area once more. Reports say that Mr. Aaron Asteroid had not been paying attention when making an attempt to cross the road, stepping right in front of a carriage on the way to his shop, Heavenly Antiques. He passed instantly.

To make matters worse, the carriage behind the one that hit the man could not stop in time to avoid furthering the accident. A passenger inside, Miss Regina Lacey, had hit her head quite hard. She passed soon after entering St. Mungo's. Both drivers, and the horse of Miss Lacey's carriage, were injured but are expected to make a full recovery.

Mr. Richard Gladstone, who had been courting Miss Lacey, was available for comment, "Obviously this was very unexpected. Miss Lacey was a wonderful young lady and she will be missed dearly." It was also mentioned by one of Mr. Gladstone's sisters that he had been planning to propose quite soon, only furthering the tragedy of these events. Our condolences go out to him and each family effected by this horrible event.
