Appearance:
face claim: Ashleigh Cummings
ethnicity: caucasian
height: 5ft. 3in.
eyes: Brown
hair colour: Brown
fashion: She often wears her hair up according to the style, and prefers lighter colors. While she's always put together in public, at home is a different story. She likes wearing simpler dresses - a blouse, skirt and apron when she is working. Household staff usually know when she's been working because her hair usually starts escaping from its updo halfway through. Her wand arm is her right, however she's adept at using both when necessary.

deportment: A little over average height for a Victorian woman, Veronica knows she doesn't especially stand out amongst a crowd; and nor does she prefer to. In her stature she is comfortable, and tends to stay that way in a variety of situations, including rather chaotic ones. She enjoys others company, but also tends to do just fine on her own. While she doesn't ever come across as overly boisterous or magnetic, she often has a calm presence about her and is content to chat with anyone about anything.

History:

An Inconvenient Chaos
1859After a bit of a fussy labour, a child named Veronica is born; the first of many to Mr. and Mrs. Scamander. A calm babe, if there ever was one, with curious eyes that never stop moving. Physically, however, she remains quite still and serene. This, however, will only last so long.
1861
At the age of two, she's developed more fine motor skills, something that her family encourages but again, might regret indulging later on. One day, the family cook goes into the kitchen and finds all the spoons where the ladles would be, and all the ladles in the oven. What they originally think is her first act of magic was merely the result of a bored child and a brief lapse of attention by the nanny.

In that same year, Louisa is born. Veronica is only slightly intrigued.
1863
The Scamander residence welcomes a son! Eugene is a small, squishy blob, but Veronica is quite old enough by now to help take care of him, and Louisa, thank you very much. Often times, the nanny goes to wake up the children only to find Veronica already up, and small toys placed by her siblings heads.
1866
With Eugene testing their poor nanny's sanity at every turn, Vera does her best to be a well-behaved child. This all goes according to plan except when it comes to leaving things around the house. One of Vera's new toys she created from her old toys is left at the top of the staircase, and a maid falls down the stairs as a result. It would have ended in tragedy had the creator of this new toy not been present. In an act of magic, the stairs immediately flatten into a slide and carry the maid down to safety. Veronica spends the next hour running up and sliding back down the stairs until they can be repaired.

Another baby is born, this time another sister for Louisa and Veronica, to be named Marlena. Veroinca is delighted to have another person to share her clothes and toys with, however the small child of seven can't help but feel as if her parents are somewhat deflated by the prospect of a third girl.
1868
While in the back yard enjoying an iced lolly, Veronica witnesses her brother barrel head first into a tree, saved only by his first act of magic. She wanders over to him, intrigued by what's just happened, and she sets about attempting to release Eugene. After sticks, wooden ladles from the kitchen are piled next to the tree, Veronica realizes she needs to fetch someone to help instead. She helps herself to another lemon lolly whilst the Reversal Squad figures out how to release her brother from his self-created bubble.

As the Reversal Squad leaves, they each find daisies tucked into various bits of clothing: boots, cloak pockets, and one managed to find a spoon and flower in his hood. Veronica is quite proud of herself, and to celebrate, decides how to re-create the effect her brother created. With a bedsheet and some help from the nanny, the children end up with a levitating bedsheet that bounces them high in the air. Veronica has lots of fun until she falls off and breaks her arm.
1869
Helga is born as the fifth and final child of the Scamanders. Veronica is slightly overwhelmed by the presence of another person in the house, but learns to enjoy her sisters company nonetheless. It's getting a bit cramped, though. Fortunately for her, she receives her Hogwarts letter.
Hogwarts: An Interesting Education
1870 - 1871
First Year
Perhaps it's the fact that she is the first out of the house of 5 children, but Veronica is ecstatic to be at Hogwarts. After some deliberation, the sorting hat puts her in Ravenclaw. Having had no real expectations of any house (although she figured Slytherin would be a stretch), Vera is quite pleased with herself and writes letters home filled with stories of stars and domed ceilings. Her first year passes without a hitch, and she has little trouble making friends.
1871 - 1872
Second Year
Returning to her second year of Hogwarts sees Veronica try out for the Quidditch team. While possibly not the place she had thought she'd be, she's excited about the prospect of getting to fly. In the end, she doesn't make it, however it doesn't stop her from cheering on the Ravenclaw team at every game. Throughout the year she practices in both her spare time and in Quidditch Club, in addition to experimenting on her own broom. Some experiments end better than others, and there are a few moments when Vera ends up in the Hospital Wing with a few broken bones, predominantly her arms.

And one time, both legs. It was fine. She was out of the Wing in a weekend.
1872 - 1873
Third Year
Louisa arrives at Hogwarts, finally! Having gotten over being at Hogwarts without her siblings, Vera is ecstatic at the prospect of having her sister join her in some classes. Two weeks into the term, Veronica ends up in the Hospital Wing again with a broken arm due to experimenting on her broom. This time she tried to substitute different types of twigs, including arranging them with leaves to try and help reduce drag. She ended up colliding with the very tree she took the branches from.

Still not too discouraged, she continues to try and figure out where she went wrong, and finds some friends on various house quidditch teams to try and convince to help her out. Most of the time it works. Other times, the students end up in the Hospital Wing.
1873 - 1874
Fourth Year
Fourth year sees Vera settle into more crafting. She finally got tired of breaking various bones (the fact that the Healing Mistress had also given her more than her fair share of talkings to might have something to do with it), and took up something presumably far less dangerous: embroidery. Soon, however, Veronica is attempting to figure out how to enchant the little embroidery creatures she makes. A few of the embroidered birds are a little too successful. A group of them fly into the Ravenclaw Common Room Fireplace, nearly setting the place ablaze.

This failed experiment gives her an idea, and she tries to see if she can enchant some of the embroidery charms to turn into various items for the winter: ear muffs, mittens, hats and the like. Surprisingly, after a few hundred variations, Veronica is successful and gifts them to her friends.
1874 - 1875
Fifth Year
More inventions ahoy! She brings the bouncing bed-sheet idea inside the Ravenclaw Common Room one night and half the students end up staying up until 3am taking turns bouncing themselves around the room. A few of them, naturally, end up in the hospital wing with broken bones. So does Veronica. Her parents aren't too happy to receive another letter regarding their child's trouble-making antics.
1875 - 1876
Sixth Year
Having found out she didn't get as many OWLs as she expected, Veronica doubles down on studying. While she enjoys her time inventing, she redirects this into something a bit more profitable where her education is concerned: creating little contraptions to open her curtains early in the morning to wake her up in time to go to the library, spelling her earmuffs to turn back into her embroidered pin when she'd spent enough time outside and needed to head back into the library, and creating a little mini-quill catapult that would sharpen and launch a new quill to her once she had gotten through her current one (this came in handy with essays, as Vera's loopy penmanship tended to take up a lot of ink).
1876 - 1877
Seventh Year
While the year passes by without much trouble (no broken bones on Veronica's part), she is shaken by the fact that Muggles have become aware of the wizarding world. Very much wanting to stay in her own world with her family, Vera tries to channel her focus into her studies once more. While not entirely sure what to do once out of Hogwarts, she likes the idea of having a little bit of freedom outside of the castle.
A Determined Perserverence
1878
Freedom is not as great as Veronica expects it to be. While she enjoys the time, the schedule of a debutante intimidates her to say the least. She finds herself quickly overwhelmed, and eager to go through her debutante life with as minimal difficulty as possible. She finds comfort in her friends, and they help to warm her up to the social scene. While she eventually is able to navigate it with ease, she finds she misses her home and the peace of her bedroom where she can keep making notes on her various inventions waiting for her.
1880
One trip into Hogsmeade sees Veronica make friends with an investor, Nathaniel Gallivan. She's surprised to learn he is a Muggleborn, and becomes intrigued by his Muggle past. He charms her enough, and she finds herself drawn to his temperament and kindness. There is something more to him than what meets the eye, though Veronica cannot put her finger on it. Instead, she delves deeper into her curiosity and by the end of the year, finds herself proposed to. Soon, they are pregnant with their first child.
1881
While she didn't expect her first pregnancy to be a picnic in Padmore Park, Veronica is still thrown off by the hostility that she feels at home. In addition to gaining a husband, she'd also gained two step-children. And despite having multiple siblings she helped look after, she realizes she is very much out of her depth when it comes to communicating with grown human beings who already have thoughts about her and how she compares to their own mother. While Cecily has welcomed her with a general warmth, the chill she receives from Theodore is enough to drop the temperature in the room by a considerable amount.

Her solution is to set about helping around the house where she can. Though it's the servants and house elves jobs, Veronica takes it upon herself to help out with the occasional cleaning and tidying and sending care packages to the children. While the thought of being accused of trying to replace Victoria pains her deeply, Veronica has no choice but to do what she's always done when things seem to fail: move forward, and keep trying different things.
1882
Veronica gives birth yet and while at first this labor seems quite easy, halfway through she experiences complications and must be brought to Hogsmeade Hospital. Thoroughly terrified, and furthermore not wanting to unnecessarily worry the children, she insists that this be kept quite secret from as many people as possible.
1883
Another child is born, this time a girl who she names Selene. While open to having other children, Veronica finds herself feeling quite fulfilled at the newest addition to the Gallivan household, and is content to call her family complete. This is the year she notices a change in Theo; an almost stupor that her step-son doesn't quite explain right away, and nor is Veronica eager to push him seeing as he's only just started to warm up to her. Still, she keeps an eye on him as best she can. The following year, when Theo impales himself upon his broom, Veronica surprises even herself at how distraught she becomes upon hearing the news.
1885
Cecily joins Ravenclaw as Chaser, which leaves Veronica in near tears, she is so proud. Though worried about what Cee might face due to her gender and family ties to the House Team, Vera is quite faithful in Theo's ability to see to it that she doesn't experience too much strife. This is also the year, however, that Vera eventually notices her step-daughters disposition change. Though her relationship with Cecily has always been better than her relationship with Theo, she doesn't think it right to push her step-daughter so much; after all, she figures it might have something to do with Theodore, and Vera doesn't want to force Cee's hand to betray her brother in any way.
1887
The truth finally comes to light, and all is revealed: her husband is a werewolf. And not only that, but that both Theodore and Cecily were privy to this information previously. It is a shock to Vera who can't help but feel as if she'd been left out. Though she doesn't blame her children for keeping their father's secret, she begins to doubt her husband's faith in her, and slowly starts to wonder if she knows her husband at all. Her family is her family, however, and instead of giving into her fears and turning away. Veronica sets about creating as many safety measures as someone of her education and abilities is capable of.
1888 - Present
Over the past year, Veronica has been able to come to terms with her husbands affliction, and finds that her loyalty to him and her family is only strengthened. She does all she can to make sure her family knows that she will not run and that she will not abandon them. The final blow comes when Nathaniel goes missing during a business trip. And she is struck down even further to learn that he is not dead, but that he has exiled himself for their sake. This leaves Veronica in an uncharacteristic bout of fury and helplessness; her husband knows her well, and reminds her that it is for their family's sake that she does not go to the authorities, for she would surely be imprisoned and tried. She can't decide if she hates him for knowing her so well, or loves that he does.

She does what she can to keep the family (and herself) afloat, giving them as much love and affection as she has, but she sees the stress that it has upon the children. When Theo has a breakdown and drops out of the Auror department, Veronica again does her best to comfort him. Still, as a parent she cannot help but see herself as a failure in the eyes of her family; for surely Nathaniel, even if he hadn't caused this distress to Theo, would have been able to comfort him more than she could. She does her best to step up with the help of house elves and servants, but on the particularly bad days or when she misses her husband, she experiences an underlying current of insecurity and tenseness of it all.

Personality:
— OBSERVANT — TRADITIONAL — TRUSTING — A TINKERER — MILD-MANNERED — KIND —

Having grown up in a household as chaotic as the Scamanders, Veronica is used to being in the midst of a chaotic afternoon (especially seeing as sometimes she often was the culprit of said chaos). During her youth she was quite energetic and bright eyed, willing to try and rope her friends into just about anything involving her inventions or her ideas no matter how hair-brained they might have been. Nowadays, you could say she has certainly evened out; while by no means less enthusiastic about things, her attention has expanded to a multitude of interests including Quidditch, household chores and inventions, and charity to name a few.

She has, however, always been quite mild in temperament, and it usually takes a lot to make Veronica extremely angry. She is not particularly fond of calling attention to herself, but when prompted, is not afraid of chatting in a leisurely and prolonged way with almost-strangers. She has also been consistently observant of her surroundings, though that by no means translates to being quick on her feet. Vera likes to observe and speculate to herself (or whomever she happens to be with) before reacting, which can sometimes work against her in times of great danger. It also doesn't help that her curiosity oftentimes gets the better of her. A pattern begins to emerge, and Veronica realizes that while she may rely on her good temperament to carry her through situations, this means that when she experiences more intense emotions, she doesn't always know how to handle herself.
