early childhood
1875 - 1887
although theseus was hoping for another son, one that wasn’t as meek and shy as their then two year old boy, rosaline secretly hoped they would be blessed with a daughter instead. she’d always wanted a girl that she could fuss over, escort to society balls one day, and instill in her the feminine wisdom she had gained throughout the years. amarantha, named for her grandmother, was received with open arms, and though theseus was disappointed not to have another son, though he knew that they could always try again, he couldn’t help but feel pride in seeing the blue eyes of his daughter gazing up at him from her bassinet. she was a quiet baby, in fact, her mother would state she found it rather odd that she never really cried and it made her a rather easy baby to care for, though this would change once she reached the toddler stages. as a toddler, she was known to bite, scratch, and kick her nurses if she didn’t get what she wanted, which led to them just appeasing her whims so long as it meant she’d settle. although her brother was older, he was often a victim of amarantha’s torment because he was such a soft, sensitive child. she’d break his toys, bite him, and bully him until he ran to their nurse; it wasn’t until he was old enough for a governess did he finally have some peace away from her and then she would turn her attention to tormenting her second youngest sibling.
amarantha was cold, cruel, found it amusing to kick their house elves down a flight of stairs, and lied so often that it was second nature. it only got worse when she was finally able to produce her first signs of magic; they were often explosive, violent, and she once electrocuted one of their maids to the point she had to seek medical attention - though she would not speak ill of the child aloud to anyone thanks to being well compensated for the accident. between hyacinth going blind and disabled and her eldest daughter’s outbursts, rosaline worried greatly for their family; she hoped their other two children would represent the family well at least. in reaction to it, she spent more time working with hyacinth personally to accommodate her to her new reality and she had a stricter education schedule made for amarantha; she couldn’t cause trouble if she was too busy to do so.
rosaline's new schedule seemed to work, as amarantha and her younger sibling were always busy with their governess and she was no longer throwing violent fits and instead mostly kept to herself, finding entertainment in independent hobbies like playing with her porcelain dolls, practicing her piano, and reading books. she focused on pleasing her governess and her mother who would spoil her with gifts and praise if she mastered an elegant, proper curtsy, played an entire piece on the piano without a mistake, and didn’t get choked up while reciting lines of poetry in french. amarantha learned that she could get what she wanted - her narcissism validated, new dolls, her siblings to do what she told them, if she used her words rather than resorting to violence. it did not negate her cruelty, however, as she still had no real remorse for the things she’d done and she cared very little about what was right and what was wrong, it just meant while before it seemed she ran on pure ‘id’ and had no restraint, she now had patience, cunning, and preferred using her innocent smile, her honeyed words, and manipulation to get her way.
one thing that changed as her first year of hogwarts approached was her newfound protective nature over her younger siblings; if anyone so much as looked at them wrong, amarantha would make sure they paid for it. this usually happened a lot when it came to her youngest sister, as she was so easy for the neighborhood children to tease. one boy tormented hyacinth so bad that amarantha fed him a blueberry muffin she laced with rat poison, and thankfully while he did get violently sick from it, he made a full recovery at st. mungos. unfortunately, however, an innocent house elf was beheaded for the attempted murder on the boy because amarantha claimed that he had made the blueberry muffins for the picnic the children were having. nobody would ever mess with her family and get away with it, and amarantha would make absolutely sure of it using any means necessary to do it.

hogwarts school of witchcraft + wizardry
1887 - present
the sorting hat barely had time to hover above her head when it called out ‘slytherin’ and amarantha was able to take her seat beside her new housemates, making her one of the fastest sortings in her year. she had been hoping to be in the house that her great-grandfather was the head of and she was most interested in taking his class as she found potions to be one of the most interesting subjects she had been introduced to in her previous studies. she also had an interest in defense against the dark arts, finding the concept of using magic to fight with others or defend oneself to be an interesting prospect. on the other hand, she would rather die than have to spend another minute in history of magic since they never went over anything interesting.
she wouldn’t say she exactly made friends given that would require her to feel genuinely close to someone to the point she trusted them, but amarantha did have a fair few people she would spend time with and would share knowledge with. she was charismatic and eloquent and it made people want to spend time with her, even if their relationship with her wasn’t the most usual of friendships. most of her inner circle were like-minded upper class, elitist snobs who believed in blood purity, but she had a fair amount of half-bloods and even a respectable middle class student here and there who would hang around the outskirts of her clique and if they did something for her, she’d return the favor. of course, in later years, she was also partial to a healthy amount of blackmail. one thing was true about her clique regardless of their class and blood status - they all despised muggleborns and thought them lesser; she would not allow any so called blood traitors and mudblood lovers among her ranks.
when she was able, she would take three different electives: ancient runes, ancient studies, and arithmancy. while she enjoyed ancient runes and arithmancy, though she didn’t score as high as she would have liked in them, she found ancient studies to be mostly boring… at least the kind of ancient stuff they would teach in the classroom. as for clubs, she would join the dueling club for an excuse for sanctioned violence - though was a bit disappointed that they couldn’t completely maim their opponent - and the potions club for an excuse to spend more time on her favorite subject. she wished she had more time on her timetable for other classes; she was interested in ghosts and even earth magic could have been intriguing, but she had to stick with what she liked most. amarantha studied not because she cared about knowing things, but because knowledge was power and she only wanted to know what was useful in getting what she wanted - nothing was more frustrating than the restricted section being off limits for students that didn’t have permission slips, which she was sure contained plenty of useful and powerful magic.
in her fifth year, amarantha was deep into investigating the dark arts and while she wasn’t able to get any books from school to study the kind of stuff she was interested in, she had other connections who would lend her things from their collection to study from - it was at this time she would form what would be later known as the nightshade society. at first, it was only her and three of her closest confidants - they would study the dark arts together and even perform what they could. it was a belief that no magic should ever be off limits or considered illegal and as witches and wizards, it was their birthright to cast anything they wanted. they would take unbreakable vows in order to make sure nobody would get cold feet and talk, but soon enough it wouldn’t have mattered because they were in so deep if one went down, they all were. by the end of amaratha’s sixth year, they had members from fifth year through seventh year. it was an invite only secret society and by inviting someone you were made responsible for their actions; with everyone taking unbreakable vows and doing things that were illegal and could get them expelled if any of the professors knew, nobody would chance inviting someone unless they were sure they would keep quiet.
during the summer between her sixth and seventh years, amarantha took lessons at the flint institute to prepare for her n.e.w.t.s, especially as she had tacked on alchemy after her o.w.l.s, and she had every intention of becoming an animagus by the end of her seventh year. she is eternally grateful she persuaded her mother not to send her to finishing school by showing her that she was already perfectly elegant and desirable to well connected men because she’d probably end up dying of boredom. finishing hogwarts this year felt bittersweet, especially as she sees her youngest sister about to start, but she is intrigued to see where her final year takes her and what it will be like when it is time for her to debut into society - if she isn't expelled first.
