1846 | The December before Audra's arrival, her reckless parents married in haste. Ignatius was barely 20 - not to mention a third son - when he made poor life choices with his Hogwarts crush. Although wildly in love, engagement was not expected until Ignatius was able to support a wife but… well… One thing led to another and suddenly engagement was very necessary. The scandal was kept quiet although there were those who wondered.
Fortunately they were not forced to elope and won the begrudging support of their families, but Ignatius' father made it very clear that after the wedding he would not be financially responsible for his youngest son's folly, he would have to make his own way.
1847 | Audra was born almost eight months later and while welcomed by both her parents neither felt complete joy at her arrival. They had wed before being certain they had conceived a child and while the gamble had evidently paid off that didn't mean they were in the best position to have a child. Not to mention they were both still very young themselves. Ignatius' Ministry job was exactly the sort a young man of his age and education would be expected to hold but it was not the sort of job a man of his background could expect to keep a wife and child with, not when he had no other means of income. Audra's mother, on the other hand, feared social backlash once the news reached the ears of society.
1851 | Her parents' marriage was very fragile in her first few years of life, the whole shotgun wedding ordeal and growing up faster than expected had shaken them both so badly that they hadn't been intimate since the instance that had gotten them into the mess in the first place. As Audra grew older she became increasingly aware of the tension in the house. Her nurse was her primary caretaker while her mother treated her like an antique doll she was loathe to remove from its display case. Simply put, she didn't know how to be a mother and the longer she failed to figure it out, the more of a 'thing' it became.
Audra's first act of magic came at the age of four. Her mother had come to play with her a little in the nursery and while doing so, Audra tripped on the rug and began to cry. The nurse swooped in and Edith took that as her cue to leave - she didn't know how to comfort her own daughter - but before she could make it out of the room the door suddenly slammed shut seemingly of its own accord.
1853 | Her father is promoted. Being six, Audra doesn't really grasp the significance of this but what she does notice is that very suddenly the dark cloud of tension that had been haunting the young family lifts. Her parents are so jubilant that…
1854 | …Almost nine months to the day her first sibling is born. If the noticeable change in her parents hadn't occurred prior to his arrival, Audra would have thought Constant Crouch was the reason the household was no longer strained and gloomy. Somehow her parents were even happier and her mother seemed determined never to leave the nursery again!
1856 | Another brother, this one called Valor, is born. Audra moves out of the nursery and into her own room which is actually rather cramped and not much of a bedroom but it is her own and she is pleased to be away from screaming toddler and newborn. She loves her little brother but she's very much over the wailing thing. Now that her mother has embraced her maternal instinct and apparently her husband with some regularity Audra's relationship with her is much closer now, although there is still an awkwardness there, but it's not something Audra is really aware of yet.
1857 | Clemency arrives shortly after Audra's 10th birthday. The age gap between herself and her siblings is becoming more apparent by the day, her oldest sibling is still only three years old and she is practically grown up already!
1858 | Audra leaves for Hogwarts and is sorted into Gryffindor. Considering it is her first time away from home she doesn't seem to miss it as much as she expected to. If anything she begins to flourish.
1859 | When she returns home from school she is greeted by not one, but three big changes. Firstly, the family have moved house. Secondly, she must now share a room with Constant who is still only five, although she is assured it's only temporary. Thirdly, she has yet another new sibling, another sister by the name of Affinity. Coming home she feels like something of an outsider in her own family and by the time she's starting to settle in to this very different family life, she has to go back to school.
1860 | At the end of her second year she has to choose her electives. She chooses Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, and Ghoul Studies. This time when she returns home for summer, she is most relieved to find no new siblings waiting for her. She cares for the ones she has but they are now dangerously outnumbering and still so very small! As promised, Constant now has his own room with Valor and she can at last settle in to her new bedroom.
1861 | When she returns home from school she finds out she is to expect yet another sibling. Constant is now old enough to be intelligent company to some degree but he's more interested in Valor's company. Clemency is almost stimulating company now that she's four and the boys keep excluding her so they end up bonding as much as sisters with a 10 year age gap at their age really can. It's during this particularly summer that she realizes that she's the only one without a virtue name. She also overhears a conversation between her parents regarding her schooling and the state of the family's finances.
When she returns home for Christmas it she learns that her mother miscarried. She is deeply sorry for it but mostly she feels hideously guilty that a part of her is relieved. On the upside she figures this means she'll be able to stay at school for her NEWTs although a lot can happen in four years.
1863 | Her OWL results are very respectable E's for the most part and it is with a little difficulty that she whittles down her NEWT classes to Charms, Herbology, and Potions.
1865 | Her NEWT results are about as impressive as her OWLs were and they are also quite quickly forgotten in the excitement of debuting to society. Her mother is suddenly more involved in her life than she has ever been and Audra isn't sure what she enjoys more about the summer - the blossoming relationship with her mother, getting to know her sisters, or the excitement of balls and parties.
It seems as soon as she's finding her place in her own family she's being uprooted again. Not unwillingly, however, she encouraged Mr. Greengrass every step of the way and is quite enamored with him. Maybe not quite in love but she certainly has a crush on him. He proposes and they are married just shy of the end of the year.
1866 | Her first child is born. Perhaps it is a little odd all things considered, but she finds herself gravitating towards the sort of names her mother chose for her younger siblings. He ends up with the name Fortitude and to her own surprise it's completely different from having an infant brother. Somehow his squalling - while not the most pleasant sound - is infinitely more tolerable and elicits concern rather than frustration. Most of the time anyway.
1868 | Her second son is born and she settles quickly on the name Noble. It seems she's keeping the theme.
1870 | While they obviously employ staff, she's quite involved with her little boys and enjoys reading them stories and assisting them in their games. Sadly she begins to do this less once she realizes she's expecting again and finds the boys increasingly more exhausting to keep up with.
1871 | Verity is born, Audra is quite pleased to have a daughter instead of another son. She falls pregnant again shortly after and discovers a new appreciation for her mother's childbearing exploits. It's true she wanted for her children to be nice and close in age as she wasn't to her own siblings but this is a little too close.
1872 | Grace is born and pleased by her new daughter as she is, she's exhausted and plans to sleep for the rest of the year, or at the very least alone.
1874 | Almost two years exactly since Grace was born a third daughter is born, Clementine. For a few hours she had been Clemency, however. Almost delirious with exhaustion, Audra had a lapse in her mental facilities and it wasn't until later she realized Clemency sounded so perfect because it was familiar, it was her sister! Having no reason to randomly name one child after the sister she was least familiar with, she hastily decided Clementine was a happy medium.
Audra really hopes this one will be the last, at least for a while. Nonetheless she is quite taken with her youngest and generally dotes on her entire brood a great deal, often referring to them as her 'little ducklings'.
1875 | Her husband invests in ye olde contraception at Audra's insistence that he give her a damn break from childbirth.
1877 | What a year! The muggle rebellion is one thing, but her eldest son is off to Hogwarts and then there was the Verty incident that required what felt like half the Ministry to come out and put things right — and in a bookshop of all places!
1878 | Despite the efforts made clearly something made it through because she finds herself expecting again. It doesn't last very long and she miscarries which is oddly a relief while at the same time upsetting.
1879 | Noble joins Fortitude at Hogwarts and Audra is left only with her girls. On the upside, with the boys out of the house she doesn't feel so bad focusing only on the girls and occasionally treating them to 'girly' outings or having tea parties with them. Meanwhile her social life is at an all time high now that she isn't living life from pregnancy to pregnancy.
1882 | Verity leaves for Hogwarts and Audra is suddenly seized by the realization that half of her children are at school and Grace will soon follow. She is thrown into a state of considerable broodiness which persists into the new year.
1883 | Now it's her husband's turn to be the reluctant one, although he allows himself to be talked into trying and by the summer Audra is expecting. As soon as she realizes this one will be a great deal younger than Clementine she starts having second thoughts but of course it's too late now. Grace departs for Hogwarts which just leaves Clementine behind.
1884 | So on the upside she gives birth to twins which means she can stop there and not have to worry about having one little straggler. On the downside neither survive and it's an actual disaster and incredibly distressing. Audra's barely able to be happy when Fortitude finishes his schooling and returns home, although that did have something to do with the fact that he's all grown up and starting to get a life which breaks her heart a little more.
1885 | Clementine breaks her heart some more by receiving her Hogwarts letter like the treacherous little sweetheart she is. At least Noble's home, even if he is being a successful son like his older brother and seeking gainful employment. Audra throws herself into her social life completely in light of her very empty nest and occasionally toys with the idea of an occupation of some sort but never gets past the curiosity stage.
1889 | This year makes 1877 look like a walk in the park. With Verity months away from her debut into society, Audra is swept up in preparations and enjoys it immensely - it's the most involved she's felt in Verity's life in years. One afternoon in April she's chattering on about Verity's dresses and Verity's dowry, and balls and possible matches when he suddenly suggests delaying her debut a year. Apparently their finances are in an awkward stage between investments but he assures her it just needs a little time and then they'll be doing very nicely indeed. Audra has no reason not to trust him, even if he has been a little distanced from her in recent months.
Verity graduates and Audra nearly dies of pride watching her little duckling at the Hogwarts Coming Out ball descend the stairs transformed a beautiful swan. Knowing how eager Verity was for her debut, Audra struggles to tell her that she must wait a year and has a few tense debates with her husband over whom should explain it to her.
It seems quite out of the blue when Noble then decides to fly the nest and set himself up with a house of his own. His older brother hasn't even moved out yet!
If she thought the worst of 1889 was behind her, she is proven wholly incorrect when with only a matter of weeks left of the year, her husband perishes in an accident. While not passionately in love with her late husband, she did love him and was comfortable with him as her lifelong companion, she hadn't imagined a future where they were not old and gray together and now...
Fortunately her eldest son steps in and takes the reins from his late father.
1890 | Somehow there is even more upheaval. Grace graduates Hogwarts, her husband is still dead and they're all still in mourning, and then Ford decides to sell the house and suddenly they're on Noble's doorstep and Audra can't see why it's necessary but it's all happened so fast and she can't bear to criticize her eldest son when he's dealing with all the new responsibility on top of having just lost his father.
