Appearance:
With dark hair, eyes, and a heavy brow he can sometimes be an imposing figure but when his thoughts are unburdened his expressions can be surprisingly light and open. He is right handed and solidly built, having no issue filling out his well tailored clothing. He is quite at home in muggle clothes, having been raised in muggle society, but can and will don robes if if the occasion calls for it
History:
1852 - James is born into a comfortable middle class muggle family and as Avery and Helen’s first and only child he does not want for anything, save maybe a sibling.
1859 - Strange things had been happening around James for a while but his parents had so far been able to dismiss or brush off the strange little occurrences. This is less easy to do when he falls overboard on a ferryboat and immediately shoots back up to the deck, sopping wet but otherwise unharmed.
1862 - His parents spend the subsequent 3 years secretly wondering if they’ve been raising a changeling in place of their son. That is until a stranger shows up to try and explain that James is a “wizard” rather than a fairy child. Which… doesn't make any more sense to them, honestly.
1863 - They have a few months to digest their new reality and eventually agree to let James attend Hogwarts. The ordeal of gathering his school supplies puts to rest any more ideas they may have been harboring that this was all an elaborate hoax. He goes off in September and is promptly sorted into Hufflepuff.
1865 3rd year brings electives and he’s excited to add Ghoul Studies and Earth Magic. He may have adjusted to his new life with magic but his delight and zeal for learning more about it has not been dampened.
1866 - Ester is easily the highlight of his fourth year. Of course he’d seen her around the castle before but this year they share a class. A few weeks in they are made partners for an assignment and that's all it takes. They get along exceptionally well and they are soon fast friends. She is striking and bold and so much of him wants to be part of and satisfy her whims and flights of fancy. At some point she kisses him and yeah ok maybe they are a little more than friends.
1867 - 5th year comes and James is glad to be back at school where he can spend his free time with Ester once again. He is quite smitten of course but their friendship runs deep and when the end of their fifth year draws to a close Ester’s destiny to leave school and find a husband looms over them. In a lurch of inhibition and reckless optimism he asks her to wait… to wait for him. When he graduated he’d marry her and they could spend their lives together. By some miracle she agrees.
1870 - He finally graduates, and with impressive marks no less. It's no wonder given his classic Hufflepuff work ethic and no Ester around to distract him. True to his word he proposes to her at the ripe age of 18 shortly after securing a job. His parents, long in the habit of shrugging their shoulders at the general strangeness of the world their son was a part of, protested only a little.
1874 - With its early and unconventional start their life and home in Yorkshire is small but idyllic. At least that's how James saw it. The years go by in a blur as their grand adventure of being married and making a home melds into contented routine. In April their son, Thomas, is born and James couldn't be more proud. Privately he takes it as proof that they were right to shun convention and marry as they had.
1878 - The joy of another baby is soon dulled and shattered. The birth is hard on Ester and arguably harder on the child they named Temperance. He knows the medicine she is given helps his wife but it kills him to see her lively spirit dulled by it. There is nothing to help the child and after a few torturous months of increasingly poor health she dies, casting the house into an even deeper shadow.
1879 - The death of Temperance devastates Ester and everything James tries only seems to make it worse. Thomas spends more and more time with his grandparents as Esther withdraws from the world. Their little house, once filled with the sounds of life and happiness, now seemed to resonate with alternating silence and anguish. The memory of his daughter weighs on him more than her frail frame ever had. Even the name they’d given her feels like an admonishment. Maybe this happened because of his hubris. Maybe this was their comeuppance.
He decides to move them to Hogsmeade for a fresh start. It works in a manner of speaking. Ester seems to regain some of herself in the liveliness of the more populous town but their relationship is different now and he is at a loss for how to bridge the new distance between them.
She spends more and more time out of the house and James finds himself caring for Thomas in her place. Her flighty behavior is not ideal and he misses their intimacy but it is better than the grief that had dogged her so he does his best to be happy.
1882 - By the time James is drafted into the Irvingly Expedition he had long grown frustrated with Ester’s flaky behavior. It had been nearly 3 years since they’d moved and he honestly welcomed the break and distraction. The Expedition is wild and kind of invigorating and when he makes it to the end with more money and land than he started he decides to move the family there. The little town would allow his parents to visit them once again and if he spitefully thought it might separate her from whatever sinister distraction she entertained in Hogsmeade all the better.
1885 - Thomas goes to Hogwarts and is sorted into Ravenclaw, which comes as little surprise to James considering the penchant for transfiguration he’d already been showing. As proud as James is to see him off, his departure also means he could no longer be a focal point in the house. It doesn't take long for the pretense of a happy marriage to fall and Ester leaves shortly before Christmas. Even though he’d been suspecting her of extracurricular activities he is still heartbroken to have it confirmed so unequivocally. Heartbroken... and furious. Betrayal strikes hardest when it comes from someone who was once your best friend. When the story breaks and her flight becomes the topic of gossip it becomes not uncommon for unsavory characters to taunt him with calling cards of his own wife in various states of undress.
1890 - After five years James likes to think they’ve found a new routine. He hasn't seen or heard from his wife, save for the occasional sampling of her latest work when someone discovers for the first time that their favorite porn model is actually his wife and decides to share it with him. He tries to make Thomas his focus, doing his best to give him a normal life, helped by the fact that his parents moved in to support them. It's a far cry from the idyllic life he’d once held but there's some peace to be found. In theory.
