June 30, 1890 - Sanditon Resort
Of all the places his wife had wished to journey to it had to be by the ocean. Standing outside their rented home for the summer Daniel grimaced. He had never liked the ocean. It was an untidy thing. A maddening breeze always drove sand and salt down ones lungs. No, the ocean had always been his brother's domain. He'd much rather the shadows of his own life then the sea breeze and sand dunes that Freya had insisted on for this summer.
Inside the servants were unpacking, an equally unruly world that Daniel wished to avoid. Torn between wishing to avoid both the ocean and their summer home Daniel sighed. There was nothing for it, they were here now and he would be a fool not to enjoy Freya's enthusiasm for such a venture if he were to have to tolerate such unpleasantness all summer.
Daniel strode back into their lodgings and looked for his wife's golden hair amid the chaos. Ah, there she was.
"
Freya." Daniel murmured as he came up to her. "
Would you care for a walk? You can show me everything." After all she had gone on about it at such length while trying to convince him to lent a home here that she seemed to know everything about the place.

The salt scented air wafted through the open windows as Freya monitored the unpacking of their belongings. The decision to retire to the shore for the summer had come after the latest Pendergast/Lestrange wedding and had been enacted quickly. An escape would allow room to grow between her and August — would prevent them from crossing the line they've toed for months. Freya loved her husband, for all his tempers and moods he was good to her, and that had to count for something. After all, he had agreed to move to the beach despite his hatred for it, hadn't he?
She moved from pacing to lounge on a chaise placed near the open window. The staff were trained well enough for her to trust their unpacking skills, she supposed, though their newest hire was a bit wanting in intelligence. Freya knew she ought to leave the staffing of their house to the house elves, but having other people around was a comfort when Daniel was in his worst moods. (Something, she hoped, would improve with the relocation.)
"Yes, that would be delightful." She smiled at the offer. The only thing they were missing now were children to chase after. Perhaps this summer would help with that. Freya stood and walked across the room to stand besides him. "Shall we?"

That smile was the very reason Daniel had agreed to this damable venture in the first place. How at ease his wife looked, how very happy when she smiled like that. He could survive a summer like this if it kept her by his side, that smile dancing across her lips and the lines of worry that had begun to creep over her forehead to smooth away like a bad memory.
He had an impulse to kiss her on the forehead, to bend down and graze his lips over hers despite the bustling servants, but it wasn’t the time or place for such actions. Even if they would calm his nerves. Instead he offered her his arm and led them outside.
“Where to my dear?”

"Oh, I believe the boardwalk is down that way a bit," Freya replied happily as they began to walk down the sidewalk towards the main pier. How long had it been since she was last this elated to be in her husband's presence? Was it she who began to neglect him, or had he begun to withdraw from her too? Freya didn't know, though she was certain August played a part in her confusion.
"The main resort is where most of the festivities take place, soirees and the like," she explained. "And there are all sorts of shops along the boardwalk. I was thinking to purchase a painting or two for home before we leave."

Daniel allowed his wife to lead them toward the boardwalk. Not a destination he would have chosen, but it seemed only fair. He should at least try to enjoy their time here. Doubtful he would, but he owed it to his wife to at least seem more agreeable. After all one never did know when her mother would call on her for yet another illness. Besides, it seemed so long since he had seen Freya last smile like this.
Ah, festivities and soirees, more things that Daniel rather disliked. But he would attend dutifully if it brought this same smile to Freya’s lips.
“
What sort of paintings?” He asked politely really hoping she wouldn’t state something as mundane or maddening as a seascape.
RE: Unruly Worlds -
Freya Selwyn - July 15, 2020
Oh, she knew that polite tone. Daniel wasn't going to like her next statement, but, for once, Freya didn't care. "There was talk in London about an artist who paints charmed seascapes," she answered brightly. "Some have merfolk, others sunsets. I thought one might be nice to have in the parlor." Or perhaps her bedroom. Freya wouldn't mind falling asleep to the image of a rolling tide.
The pier, while not swamped with people, was crowded for so early in the day. Freya wouldn't have thought the crowds to gather until noon or later. "I was thinking of getting new sofas for the parlor. Wouldn't it be nice to match the color schemes to the water in the painting?"
RE: Unruly Worlds -

“
Mmm.” Of course it was a damnable seascape. The thing would haunt him, perhaps he might convince her of hiding it in a guest room, but then she mentioned couches too. Of course she meant to display it in the parlor. “
If you think so.” He agreed blandly. If it kept a smile on her face he would agree to most things.
As they walked onto the pier more and more people began to appear. It put his teeth on edge. This was nothing like the coziness of their quiet home. Daniel tried not to frown as a small girl ran toward them, presumably her brother chasing her down the pier, a hastled nanny not far behind. How irresponsible to allow children to run in such a manner. He had always wondered his his attitude toward children would change when he and Freya finally had one of their own.
Not sure why he felt like opening his mouth, Daniel found himself saying, “
And had you considered decorating the nursery?” He had never broached the subject with her before, allowing her to speak to him if such a thing arose, but since they were on the topic of decorating…..

Children were always at the forefront of her mind. The soft pitter patter of running feet were what she dreamt of night after night, month after month. A darling boy with bright blond hair, a beautiful girl with amber colored eyes. The sight of them was so vivid at times Freya awoke certain they were already in existence. And then, time and time again, she was forced to face the gutwrenching reality of being childless.
Six years and three healers later, and Freya still hadn't found the cause with herself for forcing them into such a state. She had tried various potions, had laid in the most ridiculous of positions at the healer's suggestions, all to no avail. They could find no cause, no way to make a pregnancy possible. Childbearing was her one purpose in nature, the absolute marking of a great wife, and she routinely failed Daniel time and time again.
The room meant to be the nursery in London presently served as storage for the bits and pieces from her childhood. A bassinet lay in the center of the room with a sheet draped over it to protect from damage. An emptying toy bin (for she could no longer bear to see such beautiful toys not getting use) sat near the corner of the room. Freya hadn't the heart to decorate it, not when she knew it would never be used. She was capable of a great many thing, but that was her one weakness.
"I have," she answered honestly, "I've given it much thought."
But had never had a cause, was what remained unsaid.

It surprised him that his wife had given it much thought but had done nothing to it. While they had never particularly discussed having children, nor why they did not have any, Daniel rather thought it was only a matter of time till such nuisances as crying children were to appear.
Was the fact that she hadn’t acted on such plans because of the lack of children? Did she feel they needed to wait until it was an assurity? Or had she decided that perhaps it was time to make the room into something else altogether? If that were the case it was easy enough to decorate one way only to change it back into a nursery again.
“
And are seascapes to be featured there as well?” Daniel asked, sensing the tension and his own confusion, and attempting to tease her. He obviously had not said the right thing if her silence was to be understood.

Of all the topics he might've brought up, why did it have to be this one? Freya had managed to keep the struggles and fears from him for
six years and now it was all threatening to bubble over like an unattended kettle. Had someone mentioned something to him about them being childless? There were often rumors in the beginning, but now it was simply part of who she was. She was Mrs. Freya Selwyn, wife of Mr. Daniel Selwyn and mother fo none.
"I thought I would let inspiration strike when it became necessary," she offered in the same sweet voice she used when navigating his foul moods. Surely, he would understand what wasn't being said and move on? Or at the very least understand her reluctance in speaking on such matters?
They walked closer to the window of a shop displaying a swimming costume. Determined as ever to change the subject, Freya excitedly said, "do you have a swimming costume, my love? I can't remember ever seeing you in one."
RE: Unruly Worlds -
Daniel Selwyn - July 17, 2020
Daniel had little reason to continue such an uncomfortable conversation and cleared his throat. “
Of course.” He let the subject drop.
A swimming costume? Surely Freya wasn’t being serious. “
No. I’ve no need for one.” He attempted to keep his tone as uninterested as possible. There was no reason to spend money on such a useless thing as a swimming costume and he certainly didn’t want to encourage Freya with that tone in her voice.

Beach days were apparently not in their future, something that disappointed her immensely. Basking in the warmth like a lazy cat was one of the most exciting opportunities for her, but if Daniel didn't wish to she could hardly go
alone. What would the gossipers say then? Perhaps Mama might be convinced to join her as long as they found a way to make shade.
She nodded quietly and said, "oh, of course. I shouldn't have mentioned it." Then, they began to walk further down the pier.

How could a simple answer to a clothing question be the wrong answer? Daniel wondered as his wife meekly continued forward. Feeling he had to do something to make it up to her Daniel put a hand on her wrist. “
Freya,” He started, hating himself. But what was a little money if it put a smile on her face. “
Perhaps you can help me pick one out.”

This was new. Freya stopped her progress to turn and face him, her eyes scanning his for any sign of insincerity. "You wouldn't mind?" She asked with a raised brow. "I was so hoping we might go swimming while we're here, but I can go with Mama if you're not wanting to. I'm sure she wouldn't mind."

Her mother. Yet another reason for Daniel to loathe this vacation. They'd had a rather.... unpleasant discussion about her mother's self invitation, but at the end of the day Daniel had seen no way forward but to allow the woman entry into this "solitude". But it wouldn't do to have her stealing Freya away from him the entire time. "
No. I wouldn't." Although by the sounds of it he did mind, very much. He'd tolerate the ocean if only so that insipid woman didn't barge into more than he would allow her.

"I'm sorry," she sighed, realizing belatedly the mention of her mother was just about the worst subject to mention. "Why don't we save shopping for another day? I think we can have the tailor come to the house to take your measurements, too." And then he wouldn't have to suffer through shopping, either.
