1878 | Georg Striebel was born as the youngest child of (and a pretty significant surprise to) Ferdinand and Alwine Striebel in their home city of Kassel in the newly formed German empire. His mother, Alwine, is (unbeknownst to her husband) a muggleborn witch. While she enjoyed school and showed a particular gift for charms, a family tragedy shortly after her graduation led her to swear off of magic and return to a muggle life. Her younger brother, August, lied about his age to enlist in the Hessian army and join in the war of 1866. He was severely wounded in one of the earliest battles and died a protracted and painful death in a filthy field hospital. Word of his injury didn't reach Alwine and her family until weeks after his death. The thought that she had done nothing to save him despite the fact that she could have easily apparated to him and healed him completely with a single wave of her wand tortured her. Only days after hearing the news, she'd snapped her wand, sold her cauldron and hidden the trunk with her school books and robes deep in the basement of her parents' house m, never to see it again. Years later, she still hadn't told her muggle husband about her family's magical blood until the day, two years before Gogo's birth, that his older brother, Poldi had suddenly disappeared and reappeared under a table in a Biergarten down the road while his father was giving him the belt for being out of bed when he wasn't allowed. Their daughter Sophie Luisa had still not shown any signs of magical powers by then at a full three years Poldi's senior. It had been a blessing for her. She had almost be able to make herself believe that it had all been some far away dream. As far as Ferdinand was concerned, it was best if it stayed that way. At first glance they are a normal muggle family in a normal muggle town, living normal, muggle lives with the single misfortune of having a rather odd son who was quite the escape artist.
1880 | Georg says his first words, but can't pronounce his own name properly. He says "Gogo" instead. His family finds it so charming that they start calling him that as well. The nickname sticks.
Early 1882 | When Gogo turns four years old, his father makes the decision to carry through with a plan that his birth had postponed. A fervent supporter of Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse (even years after his death), he sells his photography studio along with the family home and leaves the newly formed German Empire in protest to seek a new life in England for his family. On the boat over from Calais, Gogo shows his first sign of magic when he makes his favorite stuffed rabbit boomerang back to him after he accidentally drops it overboard while peeking over the side of the boat with Poldi's help. With two sons showing magical ability now, and Poldi nearing school age, Alwine knows that she can't avoid her past any longer. Finally, she breaks the news to the children about what they are and starts pressuring her husband to settle in somewhere a bit more magical than their original destination of Ipswich.
Mid 1882 | Gogo's older brother, Poldi receives his Hogwarts letter in September. While Alwine and Ferdinand are split as to whether he should even be allowed to attend, Alwine wind out. In the end and Poldi goes off to Hogwarts in September with only months' worth of English under his belt. He's learned a fair bit considering his limited time in the country, but still struggles and writes many tearful letters home asking to come back. Gogo offers to switch with him as he's pretty sure he's ready for school straightaway. Alwine says no. Ferdinand says Poldi'd better get over it and not waste their money.
Early 1883 | After living on savings from the sale of their house and shop for some time and renting a room, Gogo's dad buys a newly constructed storefront in the fledgling town of Irvingly (which Alwine heard about from an old school friend and fellow political expat with whom she had regained contact) for his photography studio. They finally begin to dip their toes into the magical world, purchasing developing potions to serve their magically inclined customers while Ferdinand continues to mix his own developing solution for the muggle ones.
1884 | On Gogo's fifth birthday, his father presents him with a somewhat self-serving gift, a violin. Having been an amateur violinist himself as a young man, he had hoped that one of his two sons would become good enough to play in concert. With his older, painfully shy son, Poldi off at school most of the year and likely out of the question as he was probably not practicing, Gogo was the next best option. Gogo doesn't actually mind the violin as long practice time doesn't cut too much into playtime. He especially likes making it screech like a cat. Although his parents don't like that bit too much. He catches a thrashing from his father for it a couple of times, but it's worth it sometimes.
1884 | Soon after his sixth birthday, Gogo starts getting tutored in English, reading, writing, and math by a muggle tutor. They may have lived in a half wizarding town, but his father won't hear anything about his son not knowing anything about "normal things". The laughing plague also hits this year. While the Striebel children are at a very low risk being in Irvingly and halfbloods, but Gogo's mother still insists that he stay inside at all times until the vaccine becomes available and the danger has passed.
1885 | Just after she turns seventeen, Sophie Luisa, gets a letter from a childhood friend, the son of their neighbor in Kassel, Felix Wolke. Despite not having seen her in four years, he asks for her hand in marriage and a fare back to the German Empire as soon as he finished saving up for it, a process he began as soon as she left. Eager to leave this strange, new world of which she hardly even feel a part (and genuinely fond of the kind, gregarious neighbor boy of late), she accepts his proposal with her father's reluctant approval. Later in the year, she departs leaving young Gogo behind the counter of the studio at times, when he wasn't playing with his friends, studying, playing the violin (which he's gotten rather good at) for the occasional dinner guest, or helping to translate for his mother, who had never managed to pick up English.
1886 | While playing outside the studio, Gogo accidentally transfigures his favorite tin tiger figurine into an actual tiger, earning him a visit from the accidental magic reversal squad. He's rather disappointed that he doesn't get to keep it as a pet, and even more disappointed when he catches the punishment for it. He can't sit for a week.
1887 | Feeling well and truly ready for Hogwarts, a now nine year old Gogo causes a bit of a stir with his parents and the handful of neighbors that they've befriended when he packs his things one evening, flags down the night bus, and heads off to Hogsmeade with the goal of meeting Poldi at the school. He's gone for three days before he finally gives in and turns back. He can't sit for a full two weeks this time and doesn't see the light of day for a good month. It was worth it for the adventure, though. He'd even spent a night at the three broomsticks (using some money he'd borrowed from the studio in preparation for the trip). He figured he made up for it all with all of the times he provided volin music for apology dinners they had for the neighbors that had helped look for him.
1888 | Early in the Striebel family gets word from Gogo's now married sister, Sophie Luisa, that she is expecting her first child. In May, a son, Johannes "Hannes" Wolke, is born making Gogo an uncle.
1889 | Poldi graduates with mediocre marks. With few other options, Poldi is allowed to take over the magical side of the family business along with every job involving a crying child or baby (his father's least favorite kind of customer) in exchange for continued room and board at his parents' house and a small monthly stipend. Gogo turns eleven in June and recieves his Hogwarts letter in July. His father makes it very clear to him that he won't be staying long if he doesn't make better marks than his brother. Mr. Striebel insists he won't have another lazy disappointment in the family (Much to the discontent of Mrs. Striebel as he does so at the dinner table, directly in front of both sons). Hannes provides some additional hope for a successful male progeny in the family, but with a squib mother and a muggle father, there isn't any chance that he'll be come a successful wizard.
