Ella’s sister, Useal, has a middling reputation (Rep 4); on top of this, Ella is mostly uneducated, having never attended Hogwarts and learning her three Rs and earliest spellwork from a Magdalene laundry, and worse — she’s working class Irish Catholic.Residence: London
Father: Ian Maclodon [d. 1876]Appearance:
Mother: Charlotte Maclodon [d. 1872]
Brother: Jordan Maclodon [1857-1876]
Sister: Useal Maclodon [b. 1860]
Niece: Alina O’Malley [b. 1878]
Despite her poor status and living conditions, Ella is almost never seen without a broad, kind smile. With her warm golden curls, wide blue eyes, and slight frame standing at only five feet, one inch tall, one might almost expect her to be living a much better life than she is. She’s often wearing cast-off clothing from past years of fashion, if not her staff uniform. She was trained into being right-handed. A small detail most might not immediately notice of Ella’s physical appearance is the thin scar running from her left nostril to the corner of her jaw, a remnant of being physically attacked by her sister’s first husband.History:
1866: It’s a miracle that both Ella and her mother survive pregnancy and childbirth, ringing in the new year as a newborn babe with a mother healing from devastating illness. Ella is the youngest of the family, and the only one to have never known the life they’d had before of splendor and light.Personality: Observant, energetic, curious, enthusiastic, friendly, impractical, occasionally flighty, emotional, independent to a fault
1869: Big brother Jordan is off on his way to Hogwarts in September. Ella hasn’t the slightest clue what Hogwarts even is, being just three years old.
1871: Ella’s first sign of magic comes and goes without much celebration. After all, the odd fairy-lights she conjures are for her own entertainment, created out of panic after being left entirely alone for too long for the first time.
1872: Useal goes off to Hogwarts. Ella’s a little more bothered by this, as it leaves her the only child in the family to still be at home — at least until her sister comes home, having been expelled for thievery. Not unexpected, given the life the family lives. Worse still, only a few days after Ella’s birthday, their mother passes away after a resurgence of the illness that had nearly killed her before Ella was even born. The family’s financial situation leads their father to send the girls to the Sisters of Magical Mercy — a Magdalene Laundry promising a good education. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as Ella had hoped, had been promised by their father when he left them there. Still, she clings to the hope that maybe, just maybe, things will get better.
1876: July brings even greater misfortune, as their father and brother fall in a turf war in the Dublin wizarding slums. For the first time, Ella finds herself afraid. She does not reveal this to anyone, not even her sister, and she prays nightly for someone, anyone, to take them away from their fate.
1877: It looks like Ella’s prayers are answered when Ronan confides that Eli O’Malley, Tommy’s son, has been meeting her in secret. That he wants to take her away from all of this. And true to his word, he does — both sisters, in fact, are swept off into the new household upon Ronan’s marriage. A condition of marriage, in fact.
1878: Ella quietly destroys the letter that would be her acceptance to Hogwarts. She can’t leave her big sister and her niece, not with Eli turning on them, claiming that little Alina wasn’t even his. She does not say a word of this to Ronan, though she expects that she knows anyway. Ella is the one to treat Ronan’s bruises when Eli loses his temper.
1881: It was sudden. Ella had had no way to predict what was going to happen, as Eli flew into one of his rages and struck her across the face, catching her jawline with a jagged and sharp nail and tearing the skin. Ronan protects her and Alina with magic, but at a cost. It appears, at least on the surface, that the spell may have ended Eli’s life. And so they run, taking refuge in Scotland, Ronan finding work at a mill while Ella put to work the skills taught to her by the Sisters of Magical Mercy — washing the clothing of the other mill employees in exchange for food and, on occasion, a little bit of education here and there. She learned to sew, a variety of household spells, and took care of her niece while her sister worked. Ella is left with a minor scar, two inches in length, just half an inch from the left corner of her mouth.
1882: Ronan develops a relationship with an older Scotsman named Tolly. Ella is wary, as one might expect, especially when he permits them to live with him and she learns that Ronan is willingly concealing illegal activity with her horrible handwriting. Still, she says nothing, focusing her energy on caring for her niece. She doesn’t say anything about the bruises.
1884: As Ella had expected, all good things come to an end in a violent way. Such seems to be the lot of the Maclodon family, as Ella finds Ronan in a pool of her own blood. She does her best to quickly patch up the injuries, despite her distinct lacking of experience with medical magic. She relies heavily on Muggle methods of healing, and the family is on the move to London, where Ronan takes up burlesque dance on top of factory work. Ella refuses to become a prostitute, and so takes up odd jobs around Diagon Alley until she can find steady employment.
1887: With the opening of the Blishwick School of Domestic Magic, Ella decides that, in order to improve her own life, and the lives of her sister and niece, she should take the Introduction to Domestic Service course. Unfortunately, she is unable to actually afford the course fee, she found herself making an Unbreakable Vow of indentured servitude to the school. A couple months later, and she’s already contracted out to a nice middle class family! It’s hard work, but it’s well worth it.
1888: The family Ella has been contracted out to work for agrees to take her on as a future employee in her own right. She can’t wait for the day, actually earning proper money for her services. She starts doing laundry for a few knuts per family in the slums — a good, easy enough way to earn a little side money to help pay for food.
1889: Ella is now close to graduating the Introduction to Domestic Service course, and upon completion, she will be officially receiving full and proper payment for her services.
