Do you refer to the time I caught my foot on the dock at the Sanditon and nearly missed the sailboat? Surely you cannot mean the dueling incident, over a year after the threat was levied; your quill may be messy but it is not so slow as that.

But be impressed, if you like. I should like to picture you agape with wonder at my misadventures.

I was still drinking myself into a stupor in while you were fabricating duels; I had to pick myself up out of the bottle while you were alone in Spain; this is me reaching out.

And I would do it again, in every lifetime.

When he first received the bundle of parchment and unfolded the top one, he thought this was petulance. And fine, he had been petulant, writing in Spanish for no reason other than it would be an inconvenience for Hudson, but this seemed a bit much. He flipped through them with only a cursory glance until he reached the final one, in English. In every lifetime. He knew French well enough to read it without extra assistance and saw that it matched the last letter. Dans chaque vie. He fetched a dictionary and translated the Greek. Se káthe zoí. Italian: in ogni vita. It was a beautiful phrase in every language. Don Juan was overwhelmed. It took him hours to compose his response.
