At a Glance
Though working class, Mary takes pride in her appearance with what little she can afford, and by making the most of what she already has. With a slim physique, wavy ash brown hair that she bundles up neatly and piercing hazel eyes, Mary prefers uncomplicated, simple & plain attire; Not that she has much choice in the matter.
Attire
Simplicity; Mary prefers simple, unassuming outfits, with a preference towards quiet, muted colors such as deep reds, charcoals or the various shades of brown. Her dresses are made from practical, durable fabrics such as wool or sturdy cotton, cut in classic, simple designs that lack the elegance or opulence of the upper classes. Shoe-wise, Mary prefers practical, sturdy leather boots that could endure long hours of standing and walking through quiet rows of books.
Accoutrement
She is left-handed with both quill & wand alike, and her style is communicated by the sleek, simple design of her Alder-wood wand and plain, silver jewelry pieces. Her accessories are similarly restrained: a pocket watch on a simple, silver chain, functional leather gloves, and a small brooch adorned somewhere on her outfit.
Early Years
An only child, Mary was born into a comfortable working-class family in Pendle, Lancashire. Her mother, a rural Mediwitch, and her father, a laborer, her family was comfortable enough to keep a roof over their heads and to keep food on the table in a home they called their own, all while Mary attended the nearest schoolhouse.
School Years
Sorted into Ravenclaw, Mary was fortunate enough to spend four years at Hogwarts, where she developed a particular affinity for Charms & the History of Magic, yet struggled in Defense Against the Dark Arts classes. She quite enjoyed her time at Hogwarts, and had made quite a few close friends, however her time at the school was cut short when her parents divorced, her father estranged himself from the family, and her mother couldn't afford to maintain both their home and Mary's schooling on her own.
Adult Years
Subsequently, the next few years of Mary's life were quite tumultuous, both Mary & her mother moved around the country consistently before moving to the newly founded Hogsmeade in 1877 where she found employment in a local stationers shop; And subsequently found her beloved Edward, a passing-by Coachman working for one of the local families in Hogsmeade.
For the next fifteen years, the two spent their lives together, eventually moving to London alongside Edward's employers, where Mary found herself employment in bookshops and libraries throughout the years, watching as the years passed by with a deep appreciation for how her life turned out.
Sadly, in the Spring of 1893, Edward lost his life to Dark Wizards while defending his employers from an attack, presumably a robbery. Subsequently leaving Mary heartbroken, alone and in mourning for the loss of the love of her live, and without a support network. After living on what little she had left through mourning, selling the small hovel that she once shared with her partner, she moved back to Hogsmeade to stay with her elderly mother.
Current Years
Now, perhaps feeling the need to try and regain some sense of normality, Mary has applied for the librarian position at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry, perhaps looking for a new purpose as she scrapes back small pieces of her life, piece by piece...
Much like anyone, Mary has good days & bad days. Most of the time she is polite, endearing and empathetic, especially to those less fortunate or those who she can easily relate to. She cares deeply for the students of Hogwarts, and hopes to aid in their education so that they may achieve what she never had the chance to when she attended the school. On the other hand, when she's feeling mercurial or ill-tempered, she may snap at those who test her patience or threaten the books she so zealously protects- often displaying little empathy or kindness when irked, seeming cold or distant though she doesn't mean to be.
While showing great love for students, she shows an even greater love for the books in her care, fully aware that she has been granted the custodianship of nearly a thousand years worth of knowledge, which she sees as a great privilege- especially for someone of her station. Subsequently, Mary is a stern librarian who values order and discipline. Yet, she has a genuine passion for introducing students to literature and is always willing to assist with schoolwork when necessary.
On the whole, Mary has no qualms in showing that she cares deeply about those around her, regardless of who they are or where they came from. She is quick to stand up to injustices, yet is conscious of her capabilities to do so, and will always offer a helping hand if asked. Though perhaps behind every smile is mask for the pain buried deep within...
