A boy is born to the family Osei on the Gold Coast of Africa. The family is rich and powerful — their way of life is very different from the Wizards and Witches of Europe. They are integrated into their local community and revered for their mythical powers; the separation between Muggles and those with magic talents is less clear, and they see themselves as belonging to the Ashanti Kingdom just as much as any of their neighbours.
One day, the Ministry of Magic makes contact with them. Due to the ongoing interference of the British Empire with their homelands, the clan sends one of their sons, his wife, and his family on a diplomatic mission.
This is how six-year-old Owusu Osei ends up in London — his father is chosen to go.
The boy picks up the language quickly, imitating the manner of speaking of his tutors and governesses, whom the Ministry sends to the family in an effort to strengthen their relationship with their guests. Ministry officials invite the Oseis to their houses often; they get on quite well. Rufus takes on his new name so the little British girls and boys he plays with know what to call him.
His mother at this age is already teaching him their ways of magic. She is worried he is growing too foreign in his manners, too far away already from his roots. Between the ages of nine to eleven, she returns to the Gold Coast with him for several months, but eventually settles back in London with her husband.
Rufus gets a letter from Hogwarts. His parents are hesitant to send him there, but he really wants to — all his friends told him a great deal about it. Eventually, they relent and let him go, on the condition that he returns home every summer to continue his traditional education.
His Hogwarts career starts off swimmingly. Rufus loves the school. He likes to be with his friends, he likes the academic side and he becomes very socially involved. The hat sorts him into Gryffindor without hesitation and to the surprise of no one. There is a certain daring about him, a sense of bravado that makes him be right at home.
The first few years are about having fun, for him. From his OWLs onwards he becomes more serious about his academic performance. In the background there is a conflict with his parents. In his sixth year they get ready to return to their home, but their son does not want to abandon his education. He feels very rooted where he is and after a great amount of fighting he stays behind.
Now he is determined to make his way without his family's support and puts all his energy into his NEWTs.
A design of Rhythm — Missions
Rufus demonstrates poise and interpersonal skills in challenging situations, like being able to handle difficult conversations or circumstances with tact and empathy while preserving relationships. He has the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and follows extreme rhythms of his own, inventing strange routines to challenge himself. He has a magnetic presence and the ability to bring others into his flow.
A design of Humility — Grace
He is humble enough to accept his place in creation, without trying to overstep or assert dominance over others. He is grateful for what he has and has a clear-eyed view of what he can achieve.
A design of Friction — Exclusivity
Rufus is very social and needs intimate and close bonds with people, but he is judgmental of their merit. If he feels that someone does not align with him, he shuts them out quickly. He is partial and takes sides, putting loyalty above morality.
A design of Subsistence — Enduring the Darkening of the Light
The ability to endure and overcome difficult situations. On the other side, being overly confident and complacent about avoiding risk and preventing problems in the future — living too much in the now.
Knows some forms of wandless and ritualistic magic. Wands are not widely in use in African traditions of magic, and Rufus has learned Ashanti curse magic from his parents. These spells consist of ritualistic gestures and chants. He is not as far along in mastering them as he would like to be. His favorite tricks are partial transfigurations, like pointing at someone annoying and cursing them to grow the horns of a water buffalo, which are heavy enough to make them keel over and stop talking.
