General | Johanna is tall and lean at 5'5"; she has long black hair and green eyes. She is right-handed.History:
Expressions | Like her elder brother, Ezra, Hanna's expressions are severe and sincere — it is incredibly easy to tell what she is feeling. (Unfortunately, this also makes it easy to tell when she is distracted, which is often.)
Deportment | Rigid, sudden movements — Johanna is a combination of confident and graceless. She knows where she is going, but may knock someone and something over on the way there. She carries tension in her shoulders and arms, which are usually close to her body.
Fashion | Yellows and blues; Johanna has committed to the big shoulders of 1890s fashions and rarely wears wizarding robes.
Accessories | Multiple, always; Johanna loves to wear more than one bracelet so she can swivel them around on her wrist.
Scent | Lavender and sage
Face Claim | Emma Stone, but specifically in Poor Things (2023)
we must experience everything. Not just the good, but degradation, horror, sadness 1867 Johanna is born. 1868 Less than a year later, Byron is born. 1873 Ezra goes to school. Hannah, who has become attached to her older brother, is devastated by this, and shows her first signs of magic to levitate one of his sweaters out of the closet so she can wear it. 1874-1878 As Johanna grows, she becomes more aware that her father is deteriorating — to the point where he can no longer keep a full-time job. She cannot discern why her father is so off, but becomes frightened of her father when he is not lucid. 1879-1883
First-Fourth YearJohanna goes to Hogwarts, where she is sorted into Slytherin. Byron starts school at the same time, but is sorted into Ravenclaw. Hanna spends her first few years at Hogwarts trying to ingrain herself with the other children, and becomes particularly committed to a handful of clubs, like gobstones club. She is too direct and literal to have a large group of friends, but is able to be close with some other students, and steadily is able to learn to turn her observations into phrases that are charming rather than blunt. 1883-1884
Fifth YearJohanna does well on her OWLs at the end of this year, but is not named as a Prefect, which she finds mildly devastating. She continues with five N.E.W.T. classes — she wants to be known for being smart, but does not want to pursue a career! 1884-1886
NEWTsHanna commits herself to her classes and clubs, privately wishes that the dances they learn in etiquette came more naturally to her, and towards the end of her seventh year becomes increasingly interested in various puzzles. 1886-1888 It becomes more obvious once she becomes a debutante — it is as if there is a static electricity in her veins, and when it surges, her hands shake constantly and she says things she knows she shouldn't. Johanna has an increasingly-terrible first season, and it is only once she gets back into large puzzles that she is able to chase back the static and regain control of her life — she frequently takes over the floor of one of the studies with her activities.
There's another thing that helps, that Johanna realizes between seasons — music. When she doesn't go to enough events where she can listen to it, she becomes much more jittery. The winters are hard for her, because of this.
It's after her second season that she comes to the conclusion that she is not the only individual so afflicted — her siblings have all developed their own afflictions and habits. They can never speak of it, but Hanna is sure that it impacts all of them — especially her father. Her father. She becomes terrified of becoming like him.1889-1890 Ezra falls in love with Rosalie Hunniford. Byron goes mad; he spends time recuperating at home and Johanna periodically watches him from the hallway and considers. Could she have stopped this, somehow? And then it gets worse — Ezra's engagement is broken off. 1891 Johanna becomes worried about Ezra. After a few months, she is sure that Ezra is going to end up even worse-off than their father — she forces him to sit with her and play his tile game for hours, until she is certain that he has come back to himself. Johanna makes him promise her to never let it get as bad. 1892-Present
DebufailsJohanna cannot get anyone to marry her. By winter of 1894, she becomes very worried — she is coming very close to becoming a spinster. If she is not eligible, she is likely to be invited to fewer events during the season — and without music, the puzzles alone will not be enough to keep her hands steady.
She starts to become willing to do whatever it takes to keep herself in society.
- Johanna has always been a direct person, who spends an abundance of time trying to interpret the people around her — she has also always been a bit fidgety. As a teenager and a student, she tended to make up for these things by striving to be charming, and to be the best — since the blood curse took hold when she hit adulthood, she has struggled to overcome her innate lack of filter, and when things are bad she finds herself saying things she probably should not.
- Over the years, she's become very jittery — self-conscious in ways that she wishes she would not be.
- When things are going well, she can still access that charm — it's accessing it consistently enough to get married that she struggles with. But now she's determined — if she becomes a spinster, she is worried that without the activities of society, she will slide into the same madness that has taken hold of her father.
