Appearance: At 6 foot 3 inches Hugh is a gentle giant of a man (if he had been born in the wizarding world perhaps it would have been suggested with some seriousness that there was giant blood in his family) with the broad shoulders to go with such a name. He is comfortably plump at 18 stone. While Hugh may be tall he often slouches and tries to diminish his size, wearing baggy muggle clothes to help.
Hugh has thick brown hair that he styles to keep out of his face, and a well groomed beard. His eyes are blue and his nose is neither too large nor to small.
He tends to wear muggle clothing. His wand hand is his right hand.
History: Corporeal Victor Bailey of the British Cavalry and his bride, Edith moved to India shortly after their marriage when Victor was stationed there. An ambitious man, Victor had married Edith for her sizable dowry and her father's connections to the Egypt (notably his involvement in the Suez Canal). Edith had grown up in Egypt and as such was suited to life abroad. Several years later in
1863 Edith bore Victor their first and only child, Albert. Rather disliking the name Victor had insisted on Edith took to calling Albert by his middle name, Hugh, which he was known by from then on.
As a baby Hugh watched the world with wide eyes, rarely crying. Edith's Egyptian maid that she had brought from her father's household, took over most of Hugh's rearing. His education began early at the insistence of his father who was determined his son would follow in his military footsteps and as such took great pains to teach him a variety of languages and history. Victor wasted no time ensuring his son would be well versed in politics and military tatics as well and when Hugh was 10 in
1873 Victor sent him back to England to attend proper British boys school. What was overlooked in this decision was that Hugh had always had weird things happen to him as he grew up. For instance, the time he wanted a book off the top shelf when he was five and all the books fell off the bookcase when he looked at it. If one didn't know better they'd think that perhaps the books had been falling like snowflakes, circling down around Hugh - but as magic was impossible that clearly coudln't have been the case.
At boarding school, already larger than most the boys and having grown up away from England Hugh did not fit in. It didn't help that weird things happened to him there too: portraits seemed to have conversations with him, candles never burned out, and several times there were reports of fairy lights appearing over his bed at night where he'd pour over books he was reading. During breaks he was sent to stay with his aunt (Victor's sister). And so it was that when Hugh Bailey learned he was a wizard it was his Aunt Catherine who recieved the news rather than his parents. Of course Victor was contacted and, disapproving entirely he wrote his son off. There would be no more tutors or stipends for Hugh. Edith contacted her father and asked for Hugh's education to be paid for, neglecting to mention precisely which school was in question and thus Hugh began his seven year sojourn at Hogwarts for the next seven years with the
1874-1875 school year.
Once at Hogwarts the sorting hat wasted no time in sorting him into Ravenclaw. Hugh focused on his studies. deeply enjoying history courses rather than language. When it came time to add in electives in his third year (
1876-1877) he added Ancient Studies, Ancient Runes, and Gobbldegook. When O.W.L.S came around Hugh, predicatably, did well. His sixth year (
1879-1880) he takes a heavy course load of: Ancient Runes, Ancient Studies, Astronomy, Charms, DADA, Gobbledegook, and History of Magic. He does well on his N.E.W.T.S as well at the end of his seventh year (
1880-1881).
Upon his graduation from Hogwarts in
1881 he takes a position (perhaps in hopes of showing his father he might be of some use to the British government afterall) with the Ministry of Magic in the Department of International Magical Co-Operation as a translator. He sets his aim on becoming an International Liaison and works diligently at his job. But he doesn't truly like spending time with people and he'd much rather spend his time with his books, researching history as he had in school.
With the uprising in Egypt in
1882 Hugh is stationed in Egypt. However, he meets a wealthy British wizard during his duties and the pair get to discussing the fascinating topic of Egyptian history. The meeting is fortitous because the next thing Hugh knows the man is offering to sponsor his research. Hugh spends the next decade
1882-1892 traveling around the Mediteraian and Indian Seas learning as much history as he can. He starts to publish papers and in
1887 publishes his first book, a history of magical pirates in the Indian and Mederterrian Seas. He continues his research and returns to England in
1893 to write his next book.
