early childhood
1883 - 1894
the young newberry heir, named diomedes elijah to honor his maternal grandfather as well as keep his father's family's naming tradition, was born in the middle of the summer and he was not even a day old when he was blessed with the knowledge that he would inherit everything from both of his parent's noble houses; riches and power beyond his wildest dreams. diomedes was often found being carried by his mother, far more than he was with his nurse and then later with his governess, as leona took to her motherly role right away. in turn, the little boy tended to whine and cry a lot when separated from his parents for too long.
as a toddler, diomedes came into his own personality that showed he took after both of his parents in their bravery, strength, and he even had his mother's mischievous nature. even at this young age, he tended to get himself into trouble a lot as he would run off from his governess, if she wasn't holding his hand tightly enough, and loved to get himself lost among nature and explore. it seemed he was always in need of a bath as he would get messy from his playing, but it was also clear he was always having fun as he always had a smile on his face. he also developed a love for creatures of all kinds and had a rather bad habit of trying to pick them up and carry them around - when it was a domesticated animal, it didn’t matter much, but he got hurt a few times trying to play with wild animals. then, there was the fact he’d often scare his mother and his aunt vivienne because he’d find insects to pick up and show them because he thought they were cool and he wanted to share his interest and excitement.
things changed a little bit in 1889, after the death of pierre bonaccord, diomedes’s maternal cousin. while he was old enough to understand what it meant to say that someone had died and even old enough to understand why his family was grieving, there was so much that diomedes still didn’t understand. perhaps, that was a blessing that he wouldn’t have to feel the sting of loss quite yet, when he was still so young. what he did notice was that his parents became far more protective of him than before - not that they ever had a time when they didn’t care about his well being. it was just they paid him more attention and his governess would hang onto him much tighter than before and he spent more time with his mother than with his friends and governess until she felt comfortable to loosen the reins on him just a bit. diomedes didn’t mind it much, he just hoped he could cheer his family up by being the little sunshine he always was. it was then his first sign of magic came out as he grew a little flower in his hand and gave it to his mother one day. he would never forget the pride he felt when he saw the look on her face.
at ten years old, his mother had given him more space to find his own path, especially as it was clear that he would be going away to hogwarts soon enough and would need to be able to survive on his own wits. still, diomedes knew that she was around if he needed anything and so was his father, achilles, even if he was busy sometimes. he also had his uncle orpheus and aunt vivienne, whom he saw all the time and loved to talk to when he got the chance - he would tell them all about the adventures he had when exploring and would ask them silly questions about magic and nature. he loved his family and was a happy child.
