early childhood
- 1888
most of the grand christmas festivities were over; gifts had been opened, crackers had been pulled, songs had been sung, and the children were quietly playing with their toys when dorian was born in the snowy, winter evening. he had his father's dark hair and his mother's green eyes, then, he was given his late grandfather's name as he had no sons in his branch of the nott family to carry on his legacy. it was clear that his parents would have high hopes for him and he became the apple of their eye.
young dorian was a quiet, thoughtful child who was so well behaved that he was able to attend both his uncle victor and aunt narcisse's wedding as well as his aunt rosaline and uncle alexandre's wedding without causing any major disruptions. this didn't change much at all when his little brother was born, who was much fussier than he had ever been. dorian didn't dislike his younger brother at all, but he didn't seem to warm up to him as family, either; it was as if he was just another child who lived in the house with them and would take up his parents time. when his parents were busy with his brother, dorian relied on his nanny and then later on, his governess to keep him busy, though he learned that he did enjoy solitary activities as well.
even as young as he was when it happened, even now dorian can remember being swept up out of the nursery and taken to rosier manor in a hurry because of the news his father received in a letter. there was confused feelings all around - one of both cheer and joy at the birth of two baby girls, but also one of profound sorrow as it seemed his aunt narcisse had died in childbirth. dorian couldn't say he understood death back then, but he knew he was sad, as he held his father's hand while they attended the funeral and he knew the grownups were touchy when he asked to play with the babies. it seemed like this wasn't going to be his last brush with the circle of life, as this set off an unfortunate chain of events that happened in the next years.
it seemed like a heavy cloud of gloom hovered over the rosier family, as after the death of his aunt narcisse, her parents, whom allowed dorian to call them grandparents, also died one after the other from heartbreak. it was difficult for the young boy as there was much he didn't understand because the adults were always whispering and he just wanted to spend time with them and his new cousins. then, one night while he was creeping on the stairs to get a glass of water after bedtime, he overheard his uncle victor speaking with his aunt rosaline; they were comforting each other - that didn't seem too suspicious until at five years old, dorian witnessed the two of them kiss. this would be something he'd never tell anyone about, even when he was older, as even then he knew it was something he was never meant to see because aunt rosaline already had a husband.
following the long string of deaths, ophelia decided she desperately wanted to move back home and be closer to her own family and so she took to convincing her husband to allow this. by the summer, he agreed with his wife and the family moved out of france and to wellingtonshire, hogsmeade. dorian wasn't too happy about the move because everyone he knew lived in france, but in an instant he took to life in hogsmeade because ophelia's family was obsessed with him being the first boy in their branch of the family. despite living here now and making a new life for themselves, the family still would frequently visit france during holidays or things like seeing his aunt rosaline and uncle alexandre's first baby, a boy named after his late grandfather.
dorian spends most of his time at his grandmother's estate in wiltshire, england as he loves to hear her stories and she spoils him absolutely rotten. he also finds himself rather drawn to a particular heirloom wand that she had on display that was said to belong to a grandfather of his from back when they were more heavily related to the gaunt family and acquiring basilisk parts wasn't totally illegal. after displaying a rather interesting bit of accidental magic while playing with his younger brother, as well as the time he broke into the display case just so he could hold it for a little while, his grandmother promises him he could have the wand when he came of age and this pleases him greatly. However, she orders him to not to touch it before then.
for reasons unknown to him, dorian's uncle victor and his cousins come to stay and live with them for a time before their new manor is fixed up and ready for them to live. although he has found he would rather spend time by himself than play with his little brother, dorian is rather sweet with his cousins and does all he can to cheer them up as he knew especially elisabeth wasn't fond of the idea of moving away from france just like he was when he had to leave. making his parents proud, he acts as a chaperone and escorts the girls all over hogsmeade to introduce them to the shops they may frequent and even buys them some ice cream from the allowance his father gave him. he promises that going to hogwarts when they come of age will be just as much fun as going to beauxbâtons, though that was more of a reassurance to himself than anything as the time was nearing.
having a late birthday was tough on dorian, because he felt like he should have been able to go to hogwarts the year before, but somehow there was also something nice about knowing you would be one of the older students when you did get to go. while shopping for supplies in diagon alley, he came across a beautiful black viper being sold who he felt a strange kinship with - it was then he learned of his rare ability; he was a parselmouth. not all of his mother's family had the gift, of course, some could recognize the language but not speak it, most others couldn't do either, but he understood the snake perfectly as if he'd been studying parseltongue all his life. after quietly telling his mother about it, she agreed to buy him the snake, whom he called elysium, a word he read in a book recently and loved how it sounded when he spoke it, and she would be staying at home when he went off to school as snakes weren't on the list of allowed pets. but, she did get him a snowy owl so that he would be able to send letters to his family back home; dorian would name her celeste, as she was bright and shiny like the night sky.
hogwarts school of witchcraft + wizardry
- 1895
no matter how cool and confident he acted when he got to hogwarts and at ease he seemed when he sat on the stool and was sorted into the house of slytherin like his mother, dorian was actually quite nervous and was terrified of making mistakes. as it's common for students at beauxbâtons to study alchemy alongside potions, dorian's father gave him a first year alchemy book to do as a self-study alongside his regular classes. he would send him tests and assignments and dorian was expected to keep up - it was a bit much, he thought, but he managed to figure it out as he had a natural talent for it anyway. dorian found his favorite classes were potions, herbology, and transfiguration, and he joined the clubs for french, potions, and transfiguration as well. though dorian was quite studious and spent most of his time on his assignments, he found plenty of time to make friends, charm professors, make a little mischief, and enjoy himself at the castle. he
hated flying lessons, however, as he was terrified of heights and decided he preferred to watch rather than do. despite the fact they lost the quidditch cup, dorian found he adored cheering in the stands, anyway, and he made sure to write to his family to keep them updated on all he learned.
dorian entered his second year with far more confidence than he did his first as he had the routine down and he had an idea of what to expect from his professors, even if he did still have his alchemy to keep up with. he continued to thrive in his favorite classes and though he had no time to join the music club as well as the other three that he was currently in, he still popped in the music room every now and then to practice his piano because the music helped him think and it helped him relax when he felt particularly overwhelmed. he continues to write letters to his family, including the ones in france, and he finds himself a bit jealous that when they grow up they will be able to go to the school he was meant to, though he only confides this information in elysium. it's not that he doesn't like hogwarts, of course, he enjoys being in slytherin and hanging out with his friends, but he does still feel like he was missing out on so much that his aunt, uncle, and his father always spoke about when reminiscing about childhood. it cheers dorian up, however, to find that his house manages to win the house cup this time.
it was an exciting year for dorian, as he was now able to take trips to hogsmeade on the weekends and he was able to take electives on top of his regular studies. after much deliberation, he ended up taking ancient runes and arithmancy because he felt they would best help him in the things that he was most interested in, which was alchemy and potion creation. he was still young yet, but already he was thinking about his adult future, since he knew his family was already putting a large amount of pressure on him to be a successful heir to the rosier line. dorian wasn't sure what career he wanted quite yet, but he knew what interested him and so he spent more time focusing on studying up on those things when he had the time. unfortunately, it meant his friendships wavered a bit, and so he had to work that much harder in balancing out his academic life and his personal life. it was starting to be clear to his professors he was crumbling a bit, though dorian refused to outwardly admit it to anyone.
the good news was that his cousins and his younger brother were joining him at hogwarts, which dorian was happy about because he enjoyed the idea of showing them around and making sure they had a good time at school. the bad news, on the other hand, was that dorian had to drop one of his clubs because he simply didn't have the time anymore with his extra classes and he was finally ready to admit that he was crumbling under the pressure. dorian stopped going to transfiguration club, instead keeping french club and potions club, as well as not spending as much time in the music room as he used to. he worked with his professors to better figure out his time table as they wanted him to succeed just as much as he did and he had a great appreciation for that. something else had changed for dorian in this year, and that was he was in the throes of puberty and he had his eyes on both pretty girls and handsome boys; it seemed he wasn't just girl crazy, but he was boy crazy as well. he'd flirted a few times during the summer break when he was with some older cousins of his, but if he was honest, he was just as tongue tied and nervous as any other boy his age. still, he would try and flirt with his classmates anyway, just because it was fun, though he knew he had to be careful how far he went as his father had a talk with him about the responsibility he had towards keeping the purity of young ladies that summer. dorian thought his father was a bit ahead of himself there, but he guessed that maybe in his day it was different, and besides, if he was at school, hogwarts had too many rules to do anything.
as silly as it sounded, dorian confided only in elysian about his concerns about his sexuality, since he wasn't sure who else would even understand as he knew that it was greatly frowned upon. of course, being a snake, she didn't have much to offer him in advice, but it was still nice to get his secrets out in the open. during the summer, however, he did have his first kiss and it happened to be with a boy whom he'd met in france while visiting with his father's side of the family. hogwarts was especially tough for dorian this year because it was the year he was expected to take his O.W.L. exams and his stomach was in knots, terrified that he was going to fail everything. his father let up on the alchemy self-study, promising he'd drill him on it during the summer instead so dorian could focus on his hogwarts classes, but he still didn't go back to the transfiguration club, deciding to instead, stick with just potions and french club, since it made things easier. dorian seemed more academically focused in his fifth year than in his previous years, if that's even possible, but he still did his best to balance it with his personal life because he enjoyed just spending time with his friends as they kept him grounded when he felt himself getting too anxious.
