In-Character
Full Name: Gregory Ives Yaxley
Nicknames: In school, some people tried to call him Greg. It didn't really catch on.
Birthdate: May 1, 1858
Current Age: 30
Occupation: Gentleman of leisure
Reputation: 9; although he does a perfectly acceptable (or mediocre) job at being the heir to the main Yaxley branch, it is reasonably known that he sometimes 'falls ill' or 'has other commitments' on the dates of all but the most important shindigs.
Residence: Wellingtonshire, Hogsmeade
Hogwarts House: Former Hufflepuff.
Wand: Elm, 9 1/2", swishy, unicorn hair
Blood Status: Pure
Social Class: Upper
Family: Currently in play: Livia Crabbe, nee Yaxley (sister); Phoebe Yaxley, nee Greengrass (wife)
Appearance: Standing at a decent 5"6' and a completely passable masculine build (although as a child he was worryingly long-limbed), if Gregory did not possess his last name--and the money to spend on grooming that came with it--he would very much blend into the crowd with his mid-brown hair and eyes. His clothes, while obviously fine, are just understated enough in cut and color to render him respectably invisible when among his betters. He was born left-handed, but was trained out of it from an early age.
History:
1858: born with some difficulty on May Day Eve; his mother, in a post-birth haze, gives him the second name Ives in honor of this.
1864: his first sign of magic (which was levitating his spoon for about two seconds).
1869: sent away to Hogwarts for the first time. Like his sister, he is sorted into Hufflepuff after the hat deliberates on choosing between that and Ravenclaw. Other than that, he has, by all accounts, an uneventful stay, showing no signs of above average ability in anything but Charms.
1871: begins to show an interest in cartography after coming across an atlas in the school library.
Summer, 1872: meets his betrothed; though as polite as he can be and sound with his speech impediment, he considers her particularly spoiled even for a five-year-old. Luckily she seems to feel the same way; unluckily, to show her displeasure she sets his pants on fire at the send of the evening.
1876: Graduates with a solid line of As (as well as a near O in Charms) and meets Phoebe again for lunch. He still doesn't like her--all the really changed, he thinks, is that she can better articulate what type of person she is.
1885: He gets married to the charming Ms. Greengrass, much to his displeasure. Although he tries his best not to trip over his vows and enjoy the kiss (his first, though of course he would never mention that), the act is as equally exciting and arousing as their marriage bed...which is to say that he found it simply, like everything in his life, okay at best.
1886: after a first year of marriage and several romps in the sheets, Gregory comes to the conclusion that the act, while reasonably pleasurable, was in the end time he could spend doing something that actually mattered to him. As such, he doesn't particularly notice nor care that his wife only bothers to come to bed once a month or so.
1887: Continues to make maps as his pastime, and continues to prefer it (and the accompanying solitude) to spending time with most. It is in around early fall of this year that he gets the idea to enchant his work with Homonculous charms; it takes him several long nights before he manages to be successful, and several more before he decides he needed to take a break from watching the dots on his maps go about their rounds.
1888: is
finally beginning to be suspicious of Phoebe's behavior. What will happen next will be determined soon...
Personality: Laconic. Reserved. Unfeigned commonality; feigned stupidity. Polite. Passionate (over maps). Disdainful (of most everything else).
Other: Has a cluttering disorder (more information
here.) He is also on the asexuality spectrum, though of course the orientation doesn't really have a name at this time.
Sample Roleplay Post: Cartography, like any profession, was work, and Gregory wasn't so imperceptive to not remember that such a thing was below his status. At least it was for leisure and not livelihood; there was something relaxing about almost watching himself lead the quill to glide across the parchment, raising buildings with one stroke and giving them names with another. Today, however, he set his sights on something smaller: his own estate. The last map he had drawn of the place was almost a year ago, and even remembering how shoddy it looked compared to more recent drafts made him nearly wince with embarrassment.
Fifteen more minutes passed this way before, with a grunt of satisfaction, he laid down his instrument to pick up his other. With an amount of anticipation that, if one saw him anywhere else doing anything else, would seem impossible for him to muster, he put the tip of his wand on a ink-free part of the map and muttered clearly (another apparent impossibility) the word Homonculous.
As the dots and names began to appear one by one, moving and twirling on the parchment with what he could only describe as life, he did not realize that, at 10 o'clock in the evening, the name Phoebe Yaxley was nowhere to be found.
