Though the family is without any noticeable poor life choices, they do tend to fall into the quirky category.Residence: Excalibur
Benjamin Herondale, father [1820]Appearance: Tall and lean, Riff stands at an impressive six feet tall. He could be considered lanky but there is a decent amount of muscle tone to his frame surprisingly enough. His hair is a darker brown and typically on the longer side and often looks quite unkempt. Facial hair is often a scruffy addition to his face as well, often because he’s forgotten to shave so it can be quite a surprise when he’s seen clean shaven. His eyes are light blue, quite the contrast to his darker colored hair. He’s ambidextrous and his hands are actually on the rough and calloused side, often times with random little cuts and a variety of small scars from his tinkering with machinery. While he owns fashionable and fancy clothing and wears them when the occasion dictates, he prefers to wear older clothes that have surely seen better days. The majority of his older clothing has grease stains marring them or a variety of patched holes from feeling as if he needs to get right into the nitty gritty of fixing/building different machines and whatnot.
Eleanor Herondale neé ---, mother [1832]
James Herondale, brother [1854]
Eloise Herondale, twin sister [1862]
Lillian “Aurelia” Wallingford neé Herondale, sister [1866]
and family
Evangeline Herondale, sister [1872]
1862: February 3rd could probably be considered one of Eleanor Herondale’s hardest days because certainly the birth of twins was no easy feat. A little boy came first, Nathaniel, followed quickly by a girl, Eloise. The two are thick as thieves from the start and leave the whole family busy and on their toes from then on out. Nathaniel’s assigned plant ends up Arborvitae with Eloise’s being Rose.Personality: Analytical. Intelligent. Confident. Aloof. Friendly. Kind. Loyal.
1866: At four years old, Nathaniel (or RIff as he’s quickly become known as) is actually quite curious of the new addition to the Herondale family. While he doesn’t understand how she came to be, she’s rather interesting as a whole and he can often be found watching her as she sleeps in the nursery.
1869: A seven year old Riff has taken to dismantling his toys and putting them back together. When one doesn’t go back together quite how it should, he shows his first signs of magic when a tantrum of sorts results in the toy simply bursting into flames and quickly disintegrating.
1872: Another child is born, Evangeline. At ten years old, Riff is more aware of what exactly she is but doesn’t try to analyze her existence the way he did with Aurelia. After all, he can’t very well take apart a baby and put it back together to see how it works so he continues taking other things apart around the house. His biggest fete being the antique grandfather clock in the foyer that always seemed to be just a bit off on time. He’s quite proud of himself when he does manage to put it back together though it still continues to not work quite right any longer and they’re lucky if it chimes at all.
1873: Off to Hogwarts the twins go! Both are sorted into Gryffindor. Riff proves to be quite intelligent and continues with his tinkering but also seems to attract people toward him and builds many friendships from the beginning.
1877: It comes as no surprise when Riff receives a letter just before the beginning of his fifth year that he’s been named Prefect! He takes the job quite seriously and does as is expected of him. He keeps his peers on the straight and narrow but doesn’t hesitate to help any that need help with their studies. He often finds himself being the go to for the younger Gryffindors in need of extra assistance and quite enjoys it. This is the same year Aurelia joins her siblings at school but finds herself in Ravenclaw. He’s a little bummed she isn’t sorted into his house but still makes time to spend with her when she isn’t with her new friends.
1879: Riff’s hard work and consistent behavior sees him named Head Boy during his final year of school. He quite enjoys the position and enjoys his final year of school to the max. He’s actually quite saddened when it comes to an end and he’s forced to become a real adult.
1884: Aurelia begins courting a gentleman she meets through James. Riff quite likes the man but doesn’t think too much more on any of it. Having started working more and more on his inventions, he oftens feels a bit out of touch with the world as he falls into one of his own making. So much so, he doesn’t remember much of the Laughing Plague or if anyone he knew closely had to deal with it.
1886: Aurelia and Garrett marry! It’s a joyous occasion and Riff is there with all smiles. Though his mother did force him to change just prior to the ceremony, having noticed he’d put on an oil stained shirt by accident. Clearly, he didn’t get the fashionable trait found within the family.
1887: Riff decides to spread his wings further and moves out of the family home and right into Excaliburs. It’s nice to have his own little niche and less harping to deal with from his mother over the state of his clothes or the fact he’s once more been found in the stables tinkering with the family carriage like the help. A niece is also welcomed to the family! He manufactures a little robotic pony, though it’s actually quite cute, for the baby even if it’ll be a few years before she can appreciate the fun of the toy.
1888: Riff has actually made quite the name for himself within the world of machinery and is often reached out to by factory owners to help better streamline their machines. He goes beyond simply drawing up plans and often visits the factories themselves and gets his hands dirty with tinkering on the machines so he can fully understand the way the machines work. He often lives in his own little world even while at parties, typically thinking about the way things work or the things he’s been working on. As such, he often appears a bit aloof and even dazed at times but he still remains friendly and is always up for a good laugh. Unbeknownst to him, he’s garnered quite the attraction from young ladies though it often diminishes due to his lack of acting on anything. Not exactly because he doesn’t want to, but because he is actually quite oblivious to the way he seems to charm them.
