Did You Know?
As clocks and other timepieces were expensive, working class folk who could not afford to rise with the sun could employ a “knocker-upper” to tap on their windowpane at a scheduled time. Knocker-uppers would work through the night and into the early morning. — Kayte
But then Miss Dempsey paid her so great a compliment that she wanted to hurl herself over the edge of the theater balcony in delight.

Totally Pawned
24th July, 1891 — HWI chess tournament, Hogsmeade Hall
Round three, and coming into it just having beaten Gillenwater and Crabbe, Nelson was feeling fairly confident. Not that Gillenwater had screamed natural born chess talent or anything, but surely Nelson could beat a just-finished-fourth year?

He wasn’t taking it especially seriously, when all was said and done, but he had had a good time thus far and didn’t see why this match should be any different, whatever he had heard people say about this particular Slytherin, Miss Scrimgeour. But playing white this time meant the first move was his, and Nelson selected a pawn, moved it with a grin, and then jotted down good luck! on the parchment beside him, swivelling it across the playing table to better angle the note at her.

They were opponents here. But he could still be friendly.
@Holly Scrimgeour

For Holly, there was nothing friendly about competition. It had only been a matter of coincidence that her first partner had been Miss Crickerly, one of the only girls in school that Holly could stand to be in conversation with for longer than a few minutes, but once she'd secured the win in that match the smile had faded from her face and her expression had since been locked in the hard, cold stare.

It wasn't difficult to beat Miss Dawson, she'd told herself, even if it may have been more her ego speaking than truth. She couldn't imagine a world in which she lost to a charity case (which she assumed Miss Dawson was, given how far she'd gotten in her Hogwarts education without a financially secure family) and let alone one who was her own age. After beating Miss Crickerly, a fifth year who by all means was her equal in status in blood, how difficult could it be to beat a sixth year who was mute?

"I think you're the only one who will need it," she said, and made her first move.

And the same to you, most people might have said.

Not her. Alright. If Nelson could have snorted aloud, he would have; instead, he just gave her a shrug and a raised-eyebrow grin, a little competitive, to say well, we’ll see about that, won’t we? She could keep up that icy stare all game if she liked, but that alone was hardly going to intimidate him, not from a younger student.

Nor was he inclined to sit back and play too defensively. So, a little carelessly, he sent out one of his bishops in an early offensive, hoping it would throw her off.
