Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

Dance class

Like so many girls her own age, Jocasta enjoyed dancing and so the compulsory "elective" of dancing was no trouble for her. Her dark hair was held in place by a pair of small pearl barettes to prevent it falling into her face as she went through the moves. She placed her feet together and did her very best best demi-plié before looking around at the other girls to compare herself to them, hoping to find herself amongst the best in class. Everybody looked so lovely, so elegant, despite the fact that it was quite warm in here and at least a few of them were breaking into a ladylike sweat.

Jocasta smiled and turned "Where did you learn to dance?" she asked impressed/playfully/teasingly (delete as as appropriate) the nearest girl in front of her as they transitioned into the next move, she was here to get to know people after all.

Kitty liked dancing and in etiquette classes at Hogwarts she managed quite well. But when compared it with her older sisters and the society she would one day enter Kitty was quite sure she looked like an elephant bumbling around the room. Or at least that's what her sisters always told her.

"Oh, at home." Kitty replied to the girl with a shrug as she moved through the steps they'd been assigned. She didn't like flaunting her family's status when she was one of the only of her status at school. But she had had a dancing master since she'd learned to walk, just as she sister's had.

"Well, your form is quite lovely I must say." it did pain her a little, everyone knew who Miss Arundell's parents were. She didnt like admitting that a muggleborn was better at something than her, but she also did take pride in her manners so she took this option today. "I was taught to dance in Paris, the instructors there were wonderful. Have you ever been?" she asked, hoping that she at least had that. Jocasta spun and extended her leg out to one side as the last of this little set of movements. It was point work next and Jocasta felt like this at least would be her element.

"Thank you." Kitty demurred. It ought to be she'd been drilled endlessly in it. The girl's comment about dancing in Paris made her want to wriggle her nose in annoyance but she was very proud that she'd outgrown such childish antics. It was just that the boast reminded her so much of her sisters and their friends. The very type of people whom Kitty wished most to avoid when she did one day have to brave the world of London society.

"Oh yes, indeed. Last summer in fact." Mother had taken the girls after the end of the season. The most Kitty remembered of it was endless visits to atiliers, but seeing as it had been to outfit Claire for her season Kitty supposed she ought not to have been disappointed. At least she'd been able to go at all. The year before when Lottie had needed clothes her mother and Lottie had made the trip on their own, braving the winter storms between England and France. While it was early to go in the summer for a debut the following year her mother's discovery of being seasick did force the issue - and force Claire's waist band to remain precisely the same size for a year. Poor Claire, Kitty thought. Although one day it too would be her turn. "It was absolutely beautiful. Did you enjoy your time there?" She continued through the steps rather hoping tomorrow she might find a place next to someone who wasn't so judgy.

The other girl accepted her compliment with good grace and Jocasta grinned. "Yes, very much so." Her grin was muted a little because Paris was a complex situation, it was beautiful and she enjoyed living there. But the city had had to do a lot of heavy lifting considering that her and her father had only fled there following the death of her mother. Perhaps it was a good decision as the city had helped her to survive such a dark time, she supposed. Her eyes began to crystallise with welling up tears from her pulling on her own heartstrings. She needed to change the subject and quickly.

"Might I ask what House you are in? Perhaps we shall be friends in the fall?" she added, lifting onto the very tips of her toes and taking the first few steps. She might be a muggleborn but she had her own kind of breeding that could help Joy overlook that.

Gia knew better than to eavesdrop. Well, technically, she knew it was rude to be seen eavesdropping. Listening in to other's talking without being caught was an art of the highest order. Gia wasn't there, yet. She was ecstatic about dance lessons, found that moving her body calmed her head, and she adore this.

It was only natural to eavesdrop on the two girls next to her, making friends and discussing the class. Gia managed to stay quite nearly five minutes before she had to interject. "Pardon me, but I would like to compliment you both on your dancing." Gia knew well enough to drop a polite curtsey to, she hoped, friends. "I'm Georgianna Shacklebolt, and I'm a Ravenclaw." The last part she said with great pride.
