Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

March 16, 1895 — Yarwood Observatory
But I've been watching your cues
And I know all the right moves to get you ornery
So meet me in the bathroom
And I may do what I do
To get you ornery

She was having a hard time finding time to see Nigel this weekend. Friday she'd been working at the hospital until late, and on Saturday Nigel had the St. Patrick's Day Ball. Today, the Yarwoods were hosting Mr. and Miss Farris for dinner, and maybe some others — but Nigel promised he was going to try to leave early, and Enid believed him.

She got to the observatory early, with some embroidery to occupy her, as well as a bottle of mead Evan had brewed. She poured it into one of Nigel's mugs and sipped it, and embroidered, and tried not to look at her pocketwatch too often. Luckily, Nigel didn't keep her waiting too long, and Enid abandoned her embroidery and stood up.

"You're sure no one will miss you for dessert?" Enid asked, smiling up at him.

Nigel wasn't really used to having an semblance of a social life, other than his mother's increasing insistence that he actually attend more balls and things like that. He still wasn't exactly old enough to be thought to be a serious pursuit for marriage, so he wasn't sure where her focus was coming from. It seemed conspicuous, timed with his fledgling relationship with Enid, but as far as he knew, nobody had found them out.

Having Mr. Farris over for dinner with his daughter put a damper in his attempts to leave the house, but he had promised Enid he would and so he'd excused himself shortly after dinner, citing a bit of a headache. He was a terrible liar, so he wasn't sure just how believable it had been but he'd gone up to his room and waited a bit before apparating out to the fence at the edge of the property. From there it was a quick jaunt to the observatory where he found Enid already waiting. "I doubt it. It's not like I'm all that interesting to converse with," though Mr. Farris could make a go of it, certainly. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting long." He passed her a wry smile as he leaned down to press a kiss to her cheek.

"Not at all," Enid said, smiling into Nigel's kiss to her cheek. "I'm perfectly content to sit and embroider." And she was content, even with the secrecy, just to wait for him. She'd spent so long loving him without his knowing that now that he did know, everything about their secret observatory felt perfect to her.

"Dinner was uneventful?" she asked, tone cheerful.

Nigel made his way back over to the couch and folded himself onto the worn cushions next to where Enid had been sitting. He situated his position to face her and leaned his elbow on the back of the couch, holding his head up to look at her, taking in the sight. She did look content, which was a relief. He would have hated to inconvenience her and keep her waiting unnecessarily. "Uneventful yes, mostly listened to Mr. Farris go on about his research." It was helpful sometimes and it was a topic Nigel could chime in on, but he still wasn't the most loquacious of people, even in the right environment.

"How was your day?" He asked, genuinely curious.

She settled back down into her spot on the couch, and curled her knees up under her lap. She left her embroidery abandoned where she'd left it on the sofa arm. "He does love his research," Enid said, with a small smile. She'd met Miss Farris far more often than she'd met Mr. Farris, but her father sometimes interacted with Mr. Farris and had left similar reviews.

"I had a good rest day. I helped Papa with the chickens and Rhys with checking on some of the trees, and we always take an early supper on Sundays," Enid said, with a small smile. "It made me feel — hm. Ready for the week?"

"Busy weekends are a crime," days off from work were supposed to be rest days. Nigel said this as if he didn't spent half of his weekends with his nose buried in a book doing research. Or well, he used to. He had just a fraction of a better social life these days, even if it mostly revolved around Enid. It was leagues better, in his opinion.

Scooting closer on the sofa, he leaned in to kiss her softly, one hand under her chin. "I'm glad you could squeeze me in." Nigel was by no means smooth, but he was getting more comfortable in their situation, was able to lean back on their friendship previously. Plus he really just enjoyed kissing her.
