10th November, 1894 - Black Lake, Hogwarts Fall Fest

Five minutes of banal conversation with one of her brother’s employees was enough to convince Elladora that he was a martyr amongst men. Quite why he had chosen to inflict the thoughts and feelings of others upon himself on a day to day basis she would never understand, but he persevered and every year she found herself more admiring of his grit and fortitude. Less so of his hiring skills but one could not be a master of everything.

There was even a mudblood, albeit one with a distressingly pleasing face and figure, who kept glancing her way as though they might be friends: Elladora could not recall the name and was not inclined to ask. Instead she excused herself bluntly from her current company and joined her brother on the outskirts of the grimly still Black Lake.

"I do hope this banality won't be added to your regular calendar, brother," she said slyly to the man himself, ever-cautious of keeping her voice low so they could not be overheard by the rabble. "The things they make you do..." She trailed off, the true horror too much to bear.

“Whyever do you think I invited you, Elladora?” Phineas said under his breath, the obvious answer being so that I can converse with someone who does not make me want to claw my eyes out. Lissington and the other fool professors who thought that ‘everyone could use a pick-me-up’ ought to be pleased the Headmaster had made an appearance at all. Phineas intended said appearance to be brief.

He could not admit that he had been ambushed by his inferiors about these frivolities; better to take the credit for having sanctioned it, make it a product of his own selflessness and generosity.

“Oh, I expect that if an injury befalls one of the students, perhaps in the maze or the boats,” he commented dryly, with a disdainful nod in the activities’ directions, “I will have a suitable excuse to call it off.” Not a death – he wanted no more deaths of students or faculty on his watch – but a small accident or slight maiming of a mudblood would do the trick just as well. Maybe one of them hit by a stray firework? He was rather counting on it. “Or to sack someone,” he added, with a minute twitch upwards of his mouth.

“Putting students on the lake does seem like asking for trouble,” she concurred with the thought already brewing in her mind that it would be quite interesting to see the giant squid up close. She had never had the pleasure when she was a student, spending most of her time indoors like a civilized young lady rather than the hellions that seemed to be infecting the school today. At least three young women could be heard laughing in public, enjoying themselves quite as much as their male counterparts and Ella sought out the etiquette instructor in the crowd to confirm that they were every bit as flimsy as she suspected.

“On the other hand it might weed out some of the less fortunate,” she said quietly; she checked the lake quickly though, having a sudden panic that Ursula might be on there somehow, but of course she wasn’t. “When they light the bonfire later on do you think the irony will occur to anyone?”

“If you expect any of the pupils here to comprehend the irony of anything,” or the professors, for that matter, bunch of blockheads and pansies that they were, “you are crediting them with half a brain more than any of them have.” The quidditch didn’t help – bludgers to the head only destroyed the lonely braincells his pitiful students did have – but he had tried to ban most elements of quidditch before, and any progress he made was always undone by a motley crew of well-meaning buffoons. (The board of governors; the Ministry; etc.)

“Speaking of the incorrigibly vapid,” Phineas said, his tone lowering a fraction further, “I meant to ask how you are getting on, at home?” With Ursula, he meant. Elladora was, after all, her common sense and conscience, both.

There had been a time – a blissful, unemotional before time – when things were simple. Her brother was the finest man she knew and Ursula was a feckless slut that needed two eyes kept on her at all times. But, well, she wasn’t made of stone, was she? Ursula had taken on the unfortunate mantle of being a living, breathing person and Ella cared about her too much to take the same pleasure in dismissing her as an ornament that she once would have done.

Of course she would never say as much to Phineas. The very thought was enough to make her feel itchy but, as was her way, she displayed all these emotions by sniffing dismissively and gazing across the lake.

“Nothing too untoward,” no late night visits, no fever dreams and no pregnancies, at least. “She seems rather quiet lately, in fact.”
