Class Changes
#1
Hello Charming Geniuses,

I have a question about class changes without accidentally retconning a character.

In the muggle world it's completely possible to drop and add a class before a certain point in the term, especially an elective.
While students would be at an obvious disadvantage switching, are they allowed to do so?

Hermoine dropped Divinations and continued with her too many classes.

Can a student get smart and drop an unneeded class and add another elective instead, with permission of the professor?

Thank you!

P.S. Yes, in real life, I am that asshole that asks Registrar these questions. I have no regrets.

DROPS: I would say yes as still as you have the requisite number of courses. Students must have a minimum of 1 electeve at years 3-5, and a minimum of 3 courses at years 6-7 (plus etiquette). Years 1-2 have no choices whatsoever.

ADDS: I would say no. You enroll by the start of term or not at all. There is no precedent in canon otherwise and I don'twant to track it xD

EXCEPTION: Art and music. You do you, boo.

Clarification: does that mean a student could have dropped and added at the start of this year/end of last term? Totally agree about no mid switching.

To build on that: Could a student say add earth magic at the start of their fourth year instead of just at the beginning of the third?

(I assume you are stuck after the fifth considering they need owl scores to get in - unless you could be an overachiever and independent study and take a owl for a class you did sit through>)

You MUST start OWL classes at the start of third year and NEWT courses at the start of sixth year Calla Potts! Unless it’s NEWT only if you don’t take it for 3-5 you can’t take it in 6-7.

Themis Lyra I’m a little unsure what you’re asking! Can you reframe the question for my poor work-addled brain? XD

Aldous Crouch so no even swaps (one class for another) during the school year. I think the follow up is could they take (for instance) Divination third year, but then drop it fourth year in favor of say Earth Magic?

The OWL / NEWT thing in HP canon is pretty much based on the British school system (e.g. GCSEs/A levels), where these are 2-year-long courses etc, so you can't drop and pick them up halfway through your "OWL" years. If you haven't done third year divination from the start, for example, you can't randomly pick up 4/5/6/7th year divination later.

Thank you for making sense of this to my American brain. It was way easier to drop and add classes in U.S. high school (my experience).
