After the feast, 1st September, 1894 — Slytherin Common Rooms
“And everyone lives in there?” Connor piped up, still dubious. They had been escorted here from the Great Hall (from the right side of the Entrance Hall, and then through a bare piece of wall – a particular piece of wall. Connor had desperately tried to eye up its distance down the hall, in case he had to find it himself tomorrow and forgot where he was going and looked a fool). Then they had been given a quick tour through the tunnels, apparently towards the dormitories. Connor would be sharing with the other first year boys. He couldn’t remember ever sharing a room in his life, so although there were beds aplenty – it all felt a little crowded, here.

And they’d come back to the common room, where lots of Slytherins were now lounging, busy with their post summer catchups – and somehow this was as disorienting as standing in the middle of some foreign square or street full of people and pigeons, listening to a language you didn’t quite understand. And he had told himself he was bored of being in an empty house, anyway, and he had not planned to be homesick ever, because he had wanted this – but suddenly the comfort of that usual privacy and quiet felt very far away.

"Sinnet, watch out!", called out Leonard, who remembered the name of the pale kid from the sorting ceremony. He had just thrown a fanged frisbee with much vigour across the Slytherin common room, meaning to direct it back to the fourth year boy who had brought it from home. The teethed disc was now en route into the crowd of first graders entering the common room; if no one caught it or if the boy did not duck away in time, it would hit him in the shoulder. It might, Merlin forbid, bite him. It was salivating and gnashing its fangs in the air already.

Violetta had come quickly back to her common room to see her house mates and to male sure all of her stuff was settled in, a flurry of quick spells and her corner of the dorm room was quickly Violetta'd with pastel drapes on her bed, beautiful clothes in her wardrobe and the softest goose down pillow this side of La Manche. She checked her plait before walking back out into the common room. The new students were just settling in and finding their bunks, it would take them a little time to adjust most likely, the slytherin dungeon was not the nicest place, but it was home, and a couple of students had already noticed the windows that led out into the murky depths of the dark lake.

She heard one of the boys call out and saw the vicious toy. Violetta whipped out Rose de Minuit quickly "Immobulus" the fanged frisbee stopped in its tracked and the prefect gave the boy who threw it a pointed look. "Mr Blank, we don't play outdoor games in the common room, oui?" she asked rhetorically before gesturing at the frozen frisbee for him to collect.

"But welcome to your new home everyone, I am Mademoiselle Violetta DeCroix, I'm in fifth year and one of your prefects." she liked the sound of that.

Anne was already busy by the time the rest of her house returned from dinner. Anne had skipped out on the first night nonsense as soon as she'd had her fill and checked in with a few friends. She wasn't stupid, she was basically trying to build a working knowledge of a class she wasn't able to add to her already full course load and studying to be an animagus. Anne was already reading her textbooks. She was over the novelty and general darkness that was the Slytherin common room; she sometimes forgot it was still something to marvel at for others. Anne was able to drown out the nonsense around her until she heard a shout of warning. Head quickly swiveling to spot the threat, Anne rolled her eyes when Violette turned it into a chance to show off.

"Didn't mean to throw it at you, Sinnet," Leonard offered to the first year, but he did not look terribly sorry. He took the frisbee back from Violetta, but her words he met with silence. He was considerably less scared of Violetta DeCroix than of Flora Mulciber. He looked impressed though, as he inspected her spellwork. The fanged disc was frozen solid. Its spit, which had trailed behind it in the air seconds ago, had turned into icicles. He fussed around with one and found out that they broke off easily.

Violetta in the meantime stepped forward and addressed the crowd of little kids. She looked almost like one of them from behind, Leonard thought, except for her carefully coiffured hairdo. DeCroix was tiny, he noticed suddenly. Or it was that he had shot up almost four inches over the last few months; either way, he could look down on her. Maybe in exchange for acquiring this height, Leonard must have given away his common sense over the summer. Because he suddenly had an idea and before he could think once about it, his arm was already outstretching. He held the frisbee out behind her and gently shook it. The biggest icicle of frisbee saliva dislodged and fell. In amazement, he watched it land in the gap between the collar of her shirt and the back of her neck and then disappear, sliding down her back, probably leaving a disgusting trail. Stifling a laugh and at the same time mortified at himself, he retreated two steps and tried to look innocent.

"Sacré Dieu! qu'est-ce qu'au nom de Merlin!" Violetta squeeled as the cold slimy liquid went down the narrow gap in her dress and oozed down between her shoulder blades before soaking her undergarment. She moved across the room as if she could step out of her discomfort. She scowled at a nearby student who thought it funny before realising who she should be scowling at.

She turned right to Leonard Blank and glared at him, her cheeks were red with both shock and anger. "Why would you do that you...blaireau!" she wanted to swear at him, she wantes to pill put her wand and turn him into something slimy, perhaps she would turn him into something as inane as that awful frisbee he still held. "You think it is appropriate to put something down a lady's garments?" she felt disgusting as the ooze moved down her spine. Today was her first day as a prefect and this boy was pranking her, she knew enough from her maman that boys would not respect female figures if they didn't make themselves respected. "You.. you cant just... I'm going to give you a hundred lines for that Monsieur Blank!"

Violetta's emotions were boiling over, she hadn't been so angry since she had encountered Charley Goode. La gavroche had escaped justice, Mr. Blank would not.

Connor didn’t get an answer to his question. What he received instead was the slight comfort that one of the boys from the dinner table had remembered his name, Sinnet, well enough to call it out at short notice – although it was accompanied by a flying disc with teeth, which seemed a little less friendly a gesture.

But he was saved from it by one of the prefects, a girl he had also seen at the table. Connor took advantage of the chaos that ensued between her and Blank (?) to duck away from any possibility of getting in the way, finding an empty chair and dropping into it. He hadn’t been going to say anything aloud, but amidst the squealing and posturing and altercation between them, Connor muttered, half under his breath, “I didn’t know we were in France.”

Something had been slightly cracked in Anne's heart since the news that Violet was her year's prefect. Anne knew the world wasn't fair; she wasn't a Hufflepuff, but that didn't mean she was okay with the state of affairs. Anne wanted vengeance for the whole affair, wanted retribution swift and ugly, like in the good Greek stories she was really starting to enjoy. Anne wasn't foolish enough to believe it would happen, but when whatever fates may be heard her prayer and delivered frozen slime in the form of their servant Leo, Anne rejoiced. Anne did not laugh; she cackled. Violetta glaring in her direction brought Anne to the verge of tears.

The first year that had almost taken a fanged frisbee to the face dropped into a chair behind Anne and gave her another gift. Book was thrown to the couch, and her face was buried in her hands. Trying to regain some semblance of control, Anne was still snickering when she retorted to the first year. "She hasn't figured that out in five years; I've given up hope."

When Violetta rounded on Blank, Anne felt her hackles rise. Just like her kind to look down on Blank for a bit of fun. Pushing herself up from the couch, Anne marched herself into the eye line of both Violet and Blank. "Abusing your power already, Miss DeCroix? Shouldn't you be bringing us together on our first night, inspiring unity?"

Leonard did not know if he was surprised how mad Violetta was; he had not really thought about this at all. She was livid! He saw the first-grader slink away to safety, and he could understand it and wished to follow him. But Miss DeCroix had already turned around and directed her ire at him. He could feel his ears turn red and hot. In his first and second grade, Leonard Blank had been known for bursting into tears at harsh admonishment and being, frankly, a bit of a clingy wuss. Now, he seemed to have run out of that amount of sensitivity. He just wished she had not said the words "lady's garment" in this way; it bothered him."I was not putting it down anywhere! Don't say it like that! The icicle just came off!", he lied steadfastly.
At the mention of lines, he felt a slight surge of panic. He did not want to write anything alone in a room with the prefect watching his every move. She might choose something terribly difficult or, Merlin beware, something French! Then she might get wise to his ruse with the magic feather.
"Come on, I do not want to write lines. Ease up, I did not do anything so bad," he demanded.
Suddenly, Anne Moony marched up next to Violetta. Leonard felt his anxiety increase drastically. Moony was sharp and willful; she might actually hex him. At her support, his mouth fell open in shock. Weren't Moony and DeCroix the bestest of friends?

Violetta's anger was not sated by the weak excuse that the boy offered up, she was not stupid, the chance for the slimesicle to accidently arrive from his hands to the slightest gap between her neck and her dress collar was vanishingly small. "That was no accident Mr Blank." she admonished, she would probably be less annoyed if he had admitted to it.

Anne Moony stepped up and for some unknown reason decided to take his side. "No I am not!" she snapped at Anne for accusing her of abusing her power. Was she? She respected Anne, but surely if a ravenclaw can lose house points for using silly insulting words, then her response to this attack on her person was more than acceptable? She second guessed herself, but yes, she was confident in her behaviour. She gave a bittersweet smile to Anne.

Her voice returned to its calm and diplomatic tone but anyone that knew Violetta well could tell she was still seething "Thank you for your advice Miss Moony. Perhaps I was a little rash, perhaps fifty would be fairer? I'm sure if Mr Blank is not still not happy, then he can argue that his indiscretion was innocent to professor Valenduris, non?" Violetta didn't want to tell on the boy in the slightest, but her anger couldn't let her back down entirely as she now and something to prove. She had hoped her friend might make this transition easier for her and not harder, something was up there and she needed to resolve that later.

Violetta hoped the spectre of professor involvement would make the compromise stick and they could get back to enjoying themselves welcoming their new house mates. She thought of the candies arranged on a tray in the very next room that she and a couple of the others had procured as welcome gifts.
