She is supposed to wear eyeglasses, but will frequently leave them on top of her head or tucked into a jacket pocket instead of on her face.History:

Deportment | A recent growth-spurt has her currently rather clumsy.

1883
BirthSeveral months after the collapse of her parents' marriage, (although they are still legally married), Kaatjie is born. She is named in the Dutch tradition after her maternal grandmother, (and Maria, which her mother just liked), and lives with her mother in a cottage in Oostzaan (that her grandfather, a businessman in Amsterdam, quietly pays for.) 1889 Kaat shows her first sign of magic, after being struck by a bicycle and left entirely unharmed.
In the summer, Kaatjie and her mother travel southern Europe, something they continue to do until Ana's death. At the end of the year, grandfather dies, and leaves Ana a sum of money so she can continue to provide for herself and Kaatjie.1890 In February, Kaatjie accompanies her mother on something that Ana describes as a 'revenge tour' — her mother vanishes into a bungalow, Kaat hears screaming for a while, and eventually Ana walks back out and they leave. Once they've taken the portkey back to Oostzaan, Kaatjie asks her mother who was in the house — your father and some whore, Ana replies. This is the first time Kaat has realized that she must have a father. This is baffling, and she spends many months drawing pictures she intends to send to him to find out what he thinks, but decides that none of them are good enough.
At the end of the year, Ana falls ill, and the healers are not sure what to do with her.1892 After two years of deterioration from the wasting disease, Adriana writes a letter to her brother Klaas in October. Klaas, who has periodically been frustrated with his only sibling, (especially by her marriage,) has recently softened from the death of one of his sons in 1890. He goes on a leave of absence from his work and joins Ana and Kaatjie in Oostvert, where he lobbies the healers to take better care of his sister, and takes an active parenting role of Kaatjie.
His care doesn't prevent the inevitable — Ana dies in December.1893
ScotlandAfter Klaas gets his sister's affairs in order in January, he takes Kaatjie back to Scotland — and sends a letter to her father informing him of Ana's death. Kaatjie struggles to adapt to life in Scotland, especially as she is trying to seriously learn English — while her grandfather insisted it was part of her lessons, (having perhaps suspected that Ana would at some point need to lodge with her brother in Scotland), there is a difference between taking lessons in English from a governess for an hour a day and being surrounded by her cousins, who talk fast and use slang and do not speak Dutch.
She is also desperately missing her mother. She is a quick learner with languages, but desperately lonely, and tries very hard to befriend her cousin Arie, who eventually, begrudgingly, does become her friend.
Her uncle informs her that her other uncle is now the Minister of Magic, which baffles and fascinates Kaatjie. She returns to writing letters to her father, although she trashes them swiftly.1894 Having gained near-fluency in English, Kaatjie is very excited to receive her Hogwarts letter in July, and cannot wait to go to Hogwarts. Hopefully, she and Arie will be in the same house.
Personality:
An enthusiastic girl who is prone to the fantastical, Kaat is frequently stubborn, having inherited the trait from her mother. She can be easily-distracted, and often seeks attention and approval from adults — although whether attention-seeking is a personality trait that will stick, or one that she has developed in the aftermath of her mother's death, remains to be seen. Also caused by her mother's death: abandonment issues.Other:
- Kaatjie speaks with a Dutch accent. She is fluent in Dutch, mostly fluent in English, and can stumble along in French and Spanish.
