Nicknames: Nia, Tania
Birthdate: December 22nd, 1876
Current Age: 17 Years
Gender: Female
Occupation: Debutante
Reputation: 6 - Though well-bred and well-taught, Titania has not been seen in public for quite some time. Midway through her sixth year at Hogwarts she suffered a bout of “ill health” which left her a timid shut-in. She was pulled from school, and spent two years in convalescence with little to no presence in the public eye. Even her friends heard from her only by an occasional vague letter. Now she has re-emerged for her debut, still fragile but much recovered, at the insistence of her meddling mother.

Appearance:
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Height: 5’3”
  • Hair: Dark and glossy, worn in long ringlets.
  • Eyes: Large, and so deep a brown as to be nearly black.
  • Wand Hand: Left
  • Build: Titania has always been slender, long-boned, but since her return from convalescence there is a certain fragility to her which was never present in her school days. Her skin is so pale as to be nearly translucent, the color gone from her cheeks, the cut of her face sharper than ever. Her dark eyes often appear glazed, detached. Though she covers them well, there are deep purple shadows beneath her eyes. Sleep can be difficult to find with ethereal hands wrapped about one’s throat.
  • Attire: Titania prefers dark colors– forest greens, wine reds and nightshade purples– and chooses attire which covers every possible inch of bare skin whenever permitted. High collars, gloves, hooded cloaks, there is rarely more skin visible than that of her face. She has found that touch is less agonizing through clothing than directly.
  • Demeanor: Once sharp of wit and keen of eye, Titania no longer seems to be… all there. Sometimes she might waltz into conversations as she used to. Sometimes she might seem to lose track of what she is saying midway through, and need to be summoned back to the present. She is certainly more anxious than ever before, and tends to startle badly under even the most delicate touch. She tires easily, and thus far has withdrawn early from most functions, but that is to be expected from a girl who has been ill two long years, is it not?

History:
  • 1875: Silas Applegate and Alice Hall were not a love match, but they were a good one. Both keen as a knife and hungry for success, they got along as well as they fought and Alice was pregnant with her first daughter within a year. Titania was born in December, just a few days before Christmas.
  • 1876-1879 Titania became an elder sister twice– once to a brother, once to a sister.
  • 1880: Though Alice wanted to remain in her family’s ancestral home in magical London, nearly all of their family’s friends and allies from the wizarding world had moved to the growing epicenter of Hogsmeade over the last few years. At long last it was decided that the Applegates would move, as well. They closed up their home– to be used later, Alice insisted– and bought a new one in Wellingtonshire. The stress of the move seemed to take a toll on Silas, who became tense and easily startled. His temper flared out of control. His relationship with Alice began to deteriorate, as he seemed to refuse to explain what was wrong with him.
  • 1888: As her home life became progressively… stranger, and her parents fought more and more often, Titania entered Hogwarts with a potent mixture of excitement and relief. She was sorted into Slytherin house, like both her parents before her, and quickly made friends among her most competitive peers.
  • 1889: In her second year at Hogwarts life seemed to settle down. Silas’ nerves had eased, and in late spring her mother announced another pregnancy.
  • 1890: In the middle of February, Alice Applegate gave birth to her last daughter. Two weeks later, Silas Applegate took his own life while his wife and daughter were out paying calls. Fearful of a scandal, Alice went to great lengths to ensure his death was ruled natural– a sudden and catastrophic heart attack, and no one knew any differently. No one except Alice.
  • 1892: Titania approached her fifth year with every intention of conquering her OWLS. Her mother supported this. A woman, after all, could only fight her battles with the tools she took for herself. Titania took on a full roster of classes, determined to prove herself the smartest in the room, and it went brilliantly. Right up until her final exam. She had been feeling… odd since the night prior, and on the morning of her Arithmancy exam she kept pausing to swat at what she thought must be insects crawling on her skin. Only there was nothing there. Others noticed, of course, but they never seemed to understand when she explained to them what was happening. They would laugh, like she’d told a joke. They would exchange looks of confusion, as though she was speaking in some foreign tongue– and try though she might Titania could not shake the sensation. It distracted her so badly that she utterly failed her Arithmancy exam, and did not ease even when she returned that night. She disembarked from the Hogwarts Express that year fighting tears. That was the last her friends saw of her, save the occasional letter over the summer break.

  • 1893: Titania did not return for her sixth year at Hogwarts. Taken ill, her mother told the watching world. In convalescence. We thank you for your concerns. For two years after, Titania was not seen in the public eye. And it wasn’t entirely a lie– she was ill, dreadfully so, thrashing at the gentlest touch and halfway to mad, babbling nonsense whenever she tried to explain what it was that was wrong. Even once they got some handle on her illness through the generous application of laudanum, she failed to make much sense explaining her condition. Her mother, fearful that her husband’s decay had been somehow hereditary, fought to force Titania to pull herself together. Put on a mask for the Season. Find herself a husband before all chance for a comfortable, respectable life was lost. With no hint as to the cause of this malady, Alice determined that it was willful. Her relationship with Titania never recovered.
  • 1894: Recovered– or more accurately, tempered with laudanum and wine– Titania prepares for her first Season. She stands to debut after a battle with some mysterious illness, an unexpected face at the coming summer balls.

Personality:
  • The Girl She Was
    • Ambitious
    • Gregarious
    • Observant
    • Vain
    • Coquettish
  • The Woman She Became
    • Distracted

Titania had grand dreams, once, of wealth and power. As a girl she wanted to be the epicenter of social goings-on. She was well on her way to it, popular at school and quick to gather a creche of other socialites to her whim. She wanted her name on every tongue in the ton, her face in the dreams of every man, but all of that came crashing down in the face of some mysterious “illness” in her fifth year at Hogwarts. Confronted with a worsening condition she could no longer ignore, Titania withdrew from society for two years so as not to embarrass herself and ruin all hope of an advantageous match. For two years her mother struggled to find anything which would settle their once-proud daughter’s nerves enough to make her presentable. At long last, they surrendered to the use of laudanum.

This did the trick, for the most part. Under a carefully measured dose Titania became… manageable again, if less focused than before. If nothing else her mother figured this new, calmer Titania might make a better impression than the girl with the crooked smile and wild doe’s eyes. She rushed Titania to prepare for her debut with little resistance. After all, no one is as aware as she is of the consequences if she cannot find a good match quickly. What if her condition worsens once more? No man would willingly wed a madwoman, and Titania fears that is what she is destined to become.

Other:

  • Amortentia: Spiced wine, freshly fallen snow, and candle-smoke.
  • Boggart: A seething mass of grasping undead hands.
  • Curse: What began as a creeping sensation– like spiders crawling under Titania’s skin– has become the constant gripping of frigid hands. At any given time there may be one or two phantom hands clinging to her, and for the most part she can ignore that. It might make her somewhat irritable, but she can ignore it. What she cannot ignore is the three, four, five extra sets of hands which might seize any part of her body whenever she is touched. Any hands upon her skin save her own drive Titania to distraction. Sometimes losing herself in music can be enough to distract her from the curse, but more often than not only the numbing kiss of laudanum will calm her.
  • Wand Quirk: Black Walnut wands are not known to play kindly in the hands of liars, and since her curse came to the forefront Titania has been rendered false. She is incapable of telling anyone the truth of her deteriorating condition, and so her wand has begun to fail more and more often.
  • Vice: Alcohol and laudanum, upon which she has become increasingly dependent, as only divorcing from the present seems to ease the weight of her curse.
