June 10th, 1893 — the Slums, Hogsmeade

The Virani murder was harder to solve than Benji had anticipated, but at least he had some leads. These leads brought him to the Hogsmeade Slums during work today — as opposed to when he was, you know, living there. The trouble was that Benji had been wandering for an hour now, unable to track down any of his leads.

And then he spotted a familiar frame.

"Hey!" Benji called, trotting to catch up with the redhead. "I won't try to arrest you this time!" Well, as long as the redhead didn't do anything illegal in front of him, which was always up in the air.

Endy turned his head towards the familiar voice yelling out 'hey', pretty much instinctually upping his pace as the other trotted towards him. "What sort of new trick is this?" He asked, skeptical of the mans claim that he wouldn't try to arrest him this time. As if the man had ever been able to catch him unless he wanted to be caught.

Benji held his hands up in surrender. "Not a trick!" he offered, hopefully.

Endy narrowed his eyes suspiciously but did slow his pace a little. "Better not be. Much as I enjoy being chased by you, I am not in shape for it today." His client the previous night had been particularly... enthusiastic. But also unskilled and inexperienced. Everything ached. He was ready to run if need be, though.

Finally, Benji was able to catch up with the redhead — or, follow him only two or three steps behind. Close enough. "Where do people go to pawn something the pawn shop won't take?" he asked.

This time he really did stop short, turning to look at the other incredulously. "Do I look like some sorta snitch to ya? This is what comes from being so friendly with you lot." Not that he had actually given them much of a choice in the matter. Especially with the goofy Dorset fellow.

Benji's eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "You look exactly like a snitch to me," he said. The redhead kept flirting with him, which seemed like snitch behavior to Benji.

Endy looked intensely offended. "You take that back. I don't go around telling people you are a flapdoodle*!"

Benji made an unpleasant face. "Now you're just being petty," he said.

"I might be a lot of peoples pet but I am still no snitch,"" Endy stated crossly. He had half a mind to rob some chicken coop of its eggs and egg the constabulary in retaliation.

Benji sighed. Maybe a different tactic would be necessary? "I don't care if they fence stolen goods," he offered. He would care a different day, maybe — but he didn't care today. "It's about a murder."

"Well, why didn't you say so? Who was murdered?" Bad shit always went down that didn't always get noticed. So he assumed this was about some uppity Wellingtonshire type. No one tended to care if a rent boy or girl was murdered.

Oh, thank Merlin. Benji huffed out a breath of relief. "Mr. Caspian Virani," he answered, "He owned that Watch & Clock store on High Street?" The trouble with watches and clocks — giving people a watch on their seventeenth birthday was such a tradition that it was hard to narrow suspects. And someone had stolen Virani's — and a Grandfather Clock.
