It is rare to see a request for a penpal on the pages of Witch weekly and certainly rarer still to find one interested in politics and magical theory.

I am a young lady from a large and rather outspoken tribe and would love to meet a kindred for discussions of a deeper and more intellectual nature!  Sometimes these types of chats can be at a premium within some reaches of society.  I hope we would be a position to enrich each others lives with correspondence.

Dear Miss C,

I admit it's an unconventional avenue, but — desperate times, desperate measures, as I believe they say. Not that a desire for conversation is exactly desperate, but it certainly is something I struggle to find elsewhere, so it was time to get creative.

I am also from a large family, and while I'm not sure I would call them outspoken in general it's true that most of them are quicker to speak than I am. It leads to some situations in which I find it difficult to speak my mind, though I'm sure my family members are entirely unaware of it. I'm sure you're right that it's just as difficult, if not more so, to find true conversation outlets within the confines of society, though I have less experience with this.

Are you interested in politics or magic theory? Either or both?

Both, I have a guilty pleasure in enjoying listening to muggles discussing magical theory and abilities. I attend a 'club' in London where muggles purport to do magic and do rituals. It is entertaining listening to them get entirely everything wrong.

Although I admit that politics is what really gets my blood pumping - Independence and autonomy of individuals and peoples are my particular bug bear and women are present are of particular concern.
Last year 30,000 Australian women signed a petition to ensure they address women's suffrage - and New Zealand has a bill going through Parliament to grant women the vote as early as next year! wouldn't that be exciting! Unmarried or widowed American women can already vote!

I apologies if you are married -I am not and I am struggling to see the inducement but it seems to me that all marriage appears to do is removes a ladies freedoms and not increase them. In another few years I shall have more opportunities as a spinster than I shall have a married lady!
