SNOWCONE
#1
March 10th, 1891 — Cumbria; Last Days of Winter Party

She'd lost a glove. She had been fidgeting with it up until the point she removed it. Then, at some point during her stroll in the gardens, she dropped it somewhere. Foolish her! She went back into the maze to look for it, only she couldn't remember the exact path she had taken and now she was ankle-deep in snow. It had started snowing more fervently and Minty wished she had a parasol with her or anything to cover herself from it.

She couldn't see clearly, causing her to bump into a tall man's back. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" Minty exclaimed as she waved her ungloved hand in front of her face as if that could chase the stupid snow away.

Emrys Selwyn

His Bristol home was snowed in, and the floo was offline, and the only reason Emrys wasn't there enjoying the blizzard from the comforts of his own home was that he'd happened to spend the night before snow started in an opium den in Lincolnshire. When he'd recovered his senses in the middle of the day on the 9th, he'd tried to floo home and had found he was unable to do so. This on its own wouldn't have bothered him that much — he could easily get a room somewhere for the day, or a few days, so that he didn't have to stay in the opium den. Or, honestly, he could have just stayed in the opium den — no one would have been any the wiser and might have just assumed he was stranded in Bristol. Shortly after he'd tried to go home, however, he'd received an owl — the first of three, so far — indicating that one of his ships was not faring well in the winter weather.

He didn't know for sure if they were gone or only damaged, but in either case he'd lost his appetite for opium. He'd rented a room at the Sanditon and had ordered a few suits on emergency from a Hogsmeade store — of course, all of his usual vendors were in London because that was more fashionable, but they were out of commission now. A friend had suggested he attend this party to take his mind off of the potential loss of his ships, but he was the farthest possible thing from enjoying himself. It took some nerve for the Malfoys to have a snow-themed party when half the country was embroiled in a blizzard that was killing people (and hurting his business prospects, which was much closer to the point — if his ships hadn't been affected, he might have just spent the next three days walled up in his home drinking and smoking and enjoying the impromptu holiday). Emrys hardly thought this was cute — and his suit only sort of fit, it wasn't properly tailored and it wasn't comfortable — and he could not currently decide whether he would rather have left the party or surreptitiously lit something on fire.

This damn hedge maze wasn't cute, either. Emrys had just decided to pull his wand out and send the whole thing up in smoke (they would never know — they'd blame it on a malfunctioning weather charm, which happened all the time) when someone bumped into him from behind.

"What?" he asked sharply as the woman waved her hand at him, as though trying to get his attention. It took him a moment to realize who it was that had bumped into him.

What were the odds that it would be Mr. Selwyn who she had bumped into? With one hand bare, no less! He'd think she had done it on purpose. Removed her glove and bumped onto him, to seduce him! Thankfully, the cold had already made her face quite red (her nose ridiculously so).

"I'm sorry, Mr. Selwyn, I didn't do it on purpose!" Minty frantically explained herself. "I lost my glove and I was looking for it and then it started snowing and I didn't see you there!" She had to make it clear that she hadn't bared one arm on purpose!

Oh, Miss Scrimgeour. He supposed that ruled out burning the hedge maze down. She seemed the sort who might get lost in the blaze and perish, and he didn't particularly relish the idea of being a murderer, even if it was blamed on a weather charm. Being wracked with grief or guilt was decidedly contrary to his aesthetic.

"Well, you probably won't find it now," he pointed out. "Just take the other one off and throw it in the bush, and no one will ever know."

Mr. Selwyn offered a creative solution, except...

"But then that would suggest I never wore gloves to begin with!" Minty commented with wide eyes. "What would people think?"

#6
Emrys had shifted his attention away from Miss Scrimgeour already, but looked back at her abruptly at this remark. What would people think of her? There were plenty of women who didn't wear gloves. It was the fashion for debutantes, but it wasn't as though she was a seventeen year old in her first season. She ought to have been accustomed to slightly more of the world by now, he thought.

"Why? Are you afraid someone will judge you for having misshapen fingernails?" he asked dryly. He had not actually looked at her fingernails to see whether or not they were misshapen.

Minty protectively wrapped one hand into the other, even though her finger nails were, for the most part, nicely manicured. She went through spells of them being shorter because she had been picking on them, when she was anxious about something.

"It would just seem like I'm trying to be provocative, that's all," Minty replied with a defeated tone. She liked to think herself very fashion forward, but her clothes had something of the conservative in them. She never went with bold colours or shapes. Only her hats could be considered eccentric, but they were always accompanying a mostly modest gown. "And like I'm vying for attention, being gloveless at a snow themed party."

Emrys rolled his eyes at this remark. Miss Scrimgeour could not vy for attention if she tried, and he didn't think anyone would ever accuse her of such. Not if they'd met her, at any rate.

"Just walk in confidently," he advised, though he realized as he said it she would be incapable of following this advice. "Let them think you lost it to a rogue in the hedge maze and it'll give them something to talk about."

Minty thought she had good posture and that she walked with grace, though she couldn't lie to herself to being confident.

It was with confidence, though, that she protested: "No!" She flushed and tried to add with a lighter tone. "Are you trying to have me ruined, Mr. Selwyn? I should hate to have people talk about me and I fail to understand those who constantly cry for attention, whether it's positive or not!"

#10
"Well, don't get caught with a rogue," he responded with a chuckle. "That might see you ruined. But the suggestion would only be intriguing," he explained. It might make gentlemen see her as desirable, if they thought she had engaged in a close encounter, rather than just fading into the background, which was what she currently did.

"It would?" Minty asked, doubt evident in her voice. "Wouldn't it just make men think I'm damaged goods?" She had been taught the importance of purity, of being virginal and self-respecting, so she could secure a good marriage. Men liked to have their fun with loose women, but they didn't respect them and didn't pick them as their wives and the mother of their children.

Emrys shrugged indifferently. "Some might think that," he admitted. "But at least they'd be thinking of you at all."

Minty flushed at the implication. She was by no means the most charming and noteworthy debutante of the season, but she was proud of her high standards and sense of self-respect. She hadn't allowed her family's scandal to break her down. She didn't appreciate the implication that she was so bland and boringt that having men ponder on her virtue was preferable.

"Not all attention is good attention and sometimes no attention is better," Minty commented solemnly. She would rather remain a spinster because men had found her boring, rather than because they had thought her a whore.

Emrys opened his mouth to protest, because he thought most debutantes would disagree: not being talked about (or even thought about) was a fate worse than death for a girl who hoped to marry, much less marry well. It occurred to him, however, that in his particular case, her analysis was spot on. He'd been existing on the fringe of society with a reputation only for being mysterious for years, and he preferred to keep it that way. He was thinking of taking a wife now less because he had any inclination towards one and more because he thought it might allow him to go on being largely unnoticed, at least if it did it correctly.

"Well, perhaps you're right," he allowed. "You can certainly have a lot more fun if no one is paying attention."

"I suppose," Minty replied, though it hadn't ever occured to her that was a benefit of remaining in the shadows. It was true, though. If someone had a reputation of being virtuous and beyond reproach, people would have a harder time believing they had done anything indecent. Not that Minty had any plans of doing scandalous things. Still, she had been a Slytherin at Hogwarts and she remembered something he'd told her during an older interaction.

"Reputation is everything. It matters less who you are and more who others think you are."

Minty didn't actually believe her twin was as big of a whore as people thought her to be. She thought her foolish and reckless and damaged goods, but she wasn't a whore at heart. She'd given herself to Reuben Crouch because she had thought herself in love with him. Whores didn't know such a thing as love.

"On that we can agree," Emrys said with a nod. The words had come to him without really thinking them through, and as he spoke them he realized how strange it was to think that he and Miss Scrimgeour might agree on anything at all, when their lives were so vastly different. She probably couldn't even imagine the sorts of things he got up to when he wasn't at horrendously boring (and insensitively snowy) parties like this one, so could not possibly have appreciated his comment for what it was.

Considering her for a moment with a look of bemusement, he asked curiously, "Who do you think I am, Miss Scrimgeour?"
