Nicknames:
For as long as she can remember, she has gone primarily by Pippa. She often is referred to as "Miss/Professor Young" in correspondence because people can't hear the difference. She has long since given up correcting them. She will sometimes sign as Phillip Young in business correspondence where it might pay to be male and not clearly "foreign".Birthdate: October 7th, 1860
Current Age: 29
Occupation: Astronomy Professor
Reputation: 9
Residence: Hogwarts during term; during holidays, she stays with her mother in Irvingly.
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw Alumna ('79)
Wand:
Gingko, twelve inches precisely, with a demiguise hair core. Swishy. This was made by her father, and includes symbols for peace, health, and wisdom engraved in the hilt. There is a small piece of jade at the very bottom, the last adornment he was able to add to it before his passing.Blood Status: Halfblood
Social Class: Middle Class
Family:
Theodosia "Teddy" Yeung, Sister [1860] | The Yeung twins were always in balance with one another. Teddy is the human with whom Pippa has always been closest.Appearance:
Deshi Yeung, Father [1829-1874] | Deshi and his bride immigrated from Hong Kong after a particularly vicious falling out with his family. A wandmaker by trade, he set up a small shop in Knockturn Alley, though struggled to compete with the more established Ollivanders.
Hualing Yeung, Mother [1833] | Hualing never adjusted to Britain as well as her husband or London-born children. She keeps a small cottage in Irvingly and, largely, her own company. Privately, she is dismayed that neither daughter has married, as she is worried they will end up as lonely as she is.
No part of Pippa could ever be deemed imposing. While her height—a flat five feet—is not outlandishly small, she has a slight and boyish frame and a reserved being that allows her to generally blend in. Her features plainly display her heritage—dark, straight hair; dark, almond-shaped eyes—a fact of which she has long been proud, for all that it sets her apart. Where attire is concerned, she greatly favours wizarding robes as they do not necessitate a corset, though does wear muggle clothes when visiting her mother so as not to disquiet the muggle residents of Irvingly. Though she wields her wand with her left hand, Pippa has long since been trained to write with her right.History:
Personality:Timeline
October, 1860 In the early hours of the morning, whilst the sun still slumbers, Phillipa Yeung is the first child born to immigrant parents in a small flat above Yeung Wands in Knockturn Alley. She is joined at dawn by a twin sister, Theodosia. Summer, 1864 Not even four years old, Teddy is the first of the twins to show signs of magic. Autumn, 1867 The Yeungs relocate to a less dodgy home in a lower-middle class neighbourhood of London. For the first time, Pippa has a garden in which she can spend her free time. Christmas, 1870 At ten years old, Pippa finally makes her first display of accidental magic. Having accidentally broken a porcelain doll she received as a Christmas gift, the young witch swiftly repairs it before anyone can be any the wiser. September, 1872 At nearly twelve years old, the Yeung twins depart for Hogwarts, each with a wand crafted by their father just for them. As neither of their parents had attended and their neighbourhood friends were all muggles, neither girl is certain what to expect at the school. What Pippa did not expect was to be swiftly separated from her sister, but that was indeed the case—Pippa was sorted into Ravenclaw house, and Teddy into Gryffindor. First Year
1872-1873In spite of the separation from her twin, Pippa adjusts reasonably well to her schooling, finding at last that her curiosity can be properly sated. She excels in courses that do not require actual wandwork—though the wand her father produced is entirely attuned to her, this also means it shares her reluctance to fail and the two are leery of trying anything particularly complicated. Summer, 1874 Deshi takes ill early in June, but neither of the girls realize quite how dire it is until their father is on death's door. He passes on the eve of what would have been their return to Hogwarts, delaying them an additional week. In her sorrow, Pippa would have been content never to return, but Teddy sternly reminds her that their father would not have wanted that. Third Year
1874-1875A rather more reserved pair of twins return to Hogwarts. Pippa adds Arithmancy and Divination to her timetable, finding both immensely interesting for the opportunity they present to learn in a different way about the world around her. Fifth Year
1876-1877Her first crush settles itself rather surprisingly upon one of her professors, and Pippa spends much of the year trying win his attentions by excelling in class. This does well for her grades, but her interest wanes by springtime. May sees her sit her O.W.L. examinations, where she does quite well—though her scores are not as high as she would like. Summer, 1877 The Yeungs move to the South Bartonburg neighbourhood in Hogsmeade. May, 1879 Pippa completes her time at Hogwarts. Knowing the family's modest means won't allow her to have a proper season, she begins assisting a local astronomer instead. The hours are fairly flexible, allowing her to still engage in some social calls and the occasional ball, and the work (mostly clerical) suits her. 1881 Pippa finds herself incredibly taken with a Mr. —, and he seems friendly towards her as well. Any thoughts of this turning to matrimony, however, are swiftly dashed when he meets her sister at a dance. Though Teddy is not interested for herself, she will not accept him for her sister's sake...and Pippa is unwilling to love someone who loves her sister more. In the end, neither Yeung gets married this year. 1883 Though Teddy finds herself engaged, this promise does not lead to matrimony and the match is dissolved by the twins' birthday. Autumn, 1884 With little ado, surprising even her family, Pippa publishes her first book (under the name P. Yeung) which addresses the connections and disconnects between astronomy and divination. Spring, 1885 After releasing
a number of essays specifically for women (so, dumbed down, in spite of her insistence that doing so was not necessary), Pippa uses this added income to let a cottage in Swallowbury for herself and her mother.September, 1887 Having since left her previous mentor and publishing a second, more academic text, Pippa returns to Hogwarts as astronomy professor. Summer, 1888 The mysterious fog enveloping Irvingly sees Pippa and her mother stranded in the village for a number of weeks—an experience she has little desire to repeat. 1890 Professor Ellsworth Ruskin retires (not altogether unexpected, but Pippa had expected him to have a few years left on staff!), leaving a vacancy for Ravenclaw Head of House. Though she never expects to be offered the post—both her age and her sex work against her—this does give her pause to question if her life is on the trajectory she wishes it to be.
