August 13th, 1894 — 12 Grimmauld Place, London

In hindsight she'd been incredibly tactful to have had him in August when he wouldn't be away at school. His birthday party had been a roaring success and as far as she was aware he'd thoroughly enjoyed it. Nothing was too decadent for her Sirius. He was her firstborn and now he was of age, he was a man! She couldn't quite believe it.

It was first thing in the morning, hopefully early enough that Sirius wouldn't have gone down for breakfast yet. She knocked on his door and let herself in. His curtains were still closed which meant the servants hadn't been in yet. Good. She walked over to his window and drew the curtains. The sun streamed into the room causing Ursula to wince and turn her back to the window instead.

Sirius, she whispered. Ursula slowly walked towards him and wrapped her arms around the post of his bed. Her eyes fell upon the sleepy form of her son. He looked so peaceful and more like a child than the adult he was supposed to be now. Sirius. A part of her hoped he wouldn't hear her whisper and wake up just so she could watch him a little longer.

Sirius, newly seventeen but not any more of a morning person than he'd been when he went to bed, startled awake. He sat up abruptly, and frantically blinked sleep out of his eyes.

"Mother!" he said, still too tired to realize it was his birthday.

She tried to stifle her smile as he sleepily greeted her. Good morning and happy birthday to my handsome young man. She spoke in low tones so as not to rouse him too abruptly. If someone had told her exactly seventeen years ago to the day that she would dote on this boy so severely, she would've laughed them out of the room. It had taken her a while to warm to motherhood but she'd gotten there, even her capability was highly selective.

Right, he was seventeen. His alarm at her appearance dampened, even though it did not entirely disappear. "Seventeen!" he said, a slow grin spreading across his face. He was an adult now! He had not gotten further in his thinking than that.

Ironically, the expression on his face at realizing his new found adulthood made him look more childlike than ever.

Seventeen, she echoed, unable to keep the pride out of her voice. There was also a very subtle tension in it too, as though the word had almost caught in her throat on the way out. The one difficulty in admitting to his age, that she had an adult son, was that it meant she was no longer the fresh faced 19 year old she'd been when she'd had him, nor had she been for a very long time. Do you feel like a man now?

This was a big deal for him, but it was a big deal for mother, too — Sirius looked at her, and remembered all the years where it had felt like it was sometimes the two of them against everyone else. Sometimes, that was still true.

"Is being a man supposed to feel the same?" Sirius asked, in an unprecedented moment of vulnerability.

She stepped away from the bed post and settled herself at the end of his bed instead. Probably, my darling, but no one leaves boyhood overnight - you don't have to become a man all at once. The longer he was her little boy the better. The day he realized he didn't need her would be the day he broke her heart, then he'd truly be a man. You'll always be my- Ursula stopped, finding her throat was suddenly very tight. Then she realized she was tearing up. How ridiculous of her. My little Sirius.

Sirius wasn't sure what to say, so he sat up and hugged Ursula, affectionate. "Not too little," he muttered, for levity, "I've been taller than you for a while."

Her heart swelled as he embraced and then seemed to burst. Hush, she wrapped her arms around him. You'll always be little to me, my dearest, most precious boy. Ursula kissed the top of his head and then released him. You'll continue to make me proud, won't you?

If anyone else was here, he would have hated the way she kissed the top of his head, but it was vaguely reassuring when it was just the two of them. "Of course I will," he promised. "I always have, right?"

Yes, always. Her voice wobbled a little but she'd thus far miraculously managed to avoid letting the tears in her eyes escape. Though I do worry about you, adulthood has a great many temptations, all it takes is one little mistake... And he was her son, after all, at least she'd had tighter social constraints to keep her in line before marriage. What if he decided to elope straight out of Hogwarts?

Sirius sighed; he should have expected his mother's worries would come in sooner or later. "I don't make mistakes," he said. This wasn't true, but — he wasn't in the mood to argue with her about it, otherwise.
