'Til You Can't

February 11th, 1894 - Pennyworth

Her Sunday was wildly full, a stop at her mother's house where she deliberately changed the subject about her wedding at least five times. Daff was going to keep this small if it killed her. Smaller than Dahlia's, just a little backyard wedding, all family and friends close enough to be considered as such. She was still working up the courage to ask Mrs. Grimstone if they could hold the reception in their garden in Irvingly, but she hoped it would be alright. Obviously they couldn't do it here and leave Mr. Grimstone out, so she had thought of that solution quickly enough. Nothing was cemented, not even a date yet, though she supposed she and Elias should narrow that down, since they would both prefer it was sooner rather than later.

Daff had been thankful to escape with the chore of dropping off a basket of food for Jack on her way to Elias'. Being afforded the ability to visit unchaperoned with permission was such a lovely perk. Not that it had stopped them in the past, but nobody could say anything about it now! With Delly at the flat now too, Daff found herself intruding on the workshop more and more, not that Elias minded, but she supposed she thought it more prudent than putting her roommate in an awkward situation.

Approaching Jack's townhouse, Daff felt the warmth of the late winter sun on her cheeks and smiled at the light breeze following her down the street. She hummed to herself as she swung up the stairs and knocked loudly on the door. She wasn't brash enough to just walk in, but she did think about it every now and then. Daff didn't want to cause any trouble for him, even if she considered him a brother. A few minutes passed and she knocked again. Was he not home. "Huh," she huffed aloud, usually he was home this time of day.

Ivy was a habitually nosy person, particularly with things that happened on her street. She was still curious about Gallagher's new wife — although at least Barnabas Beck didn't seem to live there anymore — but had not met her yet. She also took a more frequent interest in Dorset, who Ivy considered a — friend, of some sort.

She'd been by her window when the sunflower-looking girl appeared. Ivy expected her to be an accessory of the new Mrs. Gallagher, but it seemed the woman was looking for Dorset - so Ivy half-watched through her window. After several minutes and multiple knocks, it seemed clear that Dorset wasn't going to appear. Ivy circled back to her window and hauled it open.

"I don't think he's home," she offered.

The disembodied voice caught her off guard and had her head whipping around to find the source. Daff hadn't expected to get such a direct answer, but it had her laughing anyway. "It appears not." She chuckled as she finally located the woman in the window. "Hard to catch lately." Daff mused, looking at the offending door one more time with a sigh.

"My mum sent him some food," she explained as if that was a normal, everyday thing to say. Daff tended to forget that half-adopting a teenager and continuing to feed them into adulthood wasn't typical. "I don't want to just leave it." Daff supposed she could try again after a visit to Elias, but she'd just planned to floo home after that, and it might be later than would be acceptable for her to be walking the streets of Pennyworth.

Ivy kept on leaning out of the window. "He does need to eat better," she allowed. She had no evidence on which to base this, but Dorset did seem like a person who needed help with nutrition. (After Ivy had gone to the Bonfire in Avalon Glen with her cousin, Bronwyn had once caught her eating a mug full of talmouses as a nine o'clock dinner. But they were not talking about her, they were talking about Jack.)

"I can take it," she offered. "If you want. I won't eat it, Dorset and I are — friends."

They were certainly something.

"I've been telling him that since we were eleven." Daff laughed. So had her mother, hence the basket. At the offer to take her basket, Daff started off of Jack's stoop and towards the neighbor's open window.

"That would be helpful thank you," Daff grinned up at the woman, unable to help from noticing how pretty she was. Jack would certainly be getting quite a few questions on this next time she saw him. "You can have some, mum always packs a lot. It can be a finders fee." She wasn't even sure what was in there, leftovers, that weren't leftovers at all, but probably a full course meal that would at least get Jack through a few days.

Ivy smiled at the woman. "Happy to take a finder's fee," she said. She'd still leave most of it for Jack; if she did end up mooching any of it, it would probably be immediately after she handed the basket off to Jack, when she made him explain her connection to the woman who was dropping things off.

She leaned further out the window, ready to grab the basket. "I'm Ivy Sandow," she offered.

"Please do," Daff chuckled. There was plenty in the basket— so much so that she wasn't sure it was going to fit through the window. "I might have to meet you at the door?" It had been magically lightened for her to carry from the house, but Daff wasn't sure with the long handle and the sheer size of it, that she could lift it up and that Miss Sandow could get it inside.

Daff motioned toward the door and started that way, waiting for the occupant to open it. "I'm Daffodil Potts, by the way, but my friends call me Daffy." Everyone really. Daffodil was a bit of a mouthful and Daff seemed to fit her personality a bit better.

Ivy laughed. "Right, that makes sense," she said. She ducked out of the window and trotted over to the door. She opened it, a little self-conscious; she was wearing a bloomer suit, which some people did not like, and her hair was down. Behind her, their home looked lived-in — neat, but lived-in.

"Your sister married Constable Gallagher?" Ivy said, and added — "Congratulations." She knew it had been scandalous, but Ivy was too poor to care if people married down.

Daff was smiling when Ivy opened the door. She was pleased to know Jack had friends that lived nearby. Knowing Zinnia and Rhys had moved closer to their family home left Jack sort of on his own over here. Speaking of, "Yes, Zinnia. They're doing well." Daff hoped anyway. It had all been very messy and a little too public for their liking and Daff did worry about how Zin was doing, especially with the pregnancy, but from what she could tell Rhys was doing his very best to make sure her sister was well-taken care of and comfortable. She hadn't voiced it aloud, but Daff thought her sister could do a lot worse than the Chief Constable.

"How do you know Jack?" She asked as she handed over the basket, too curious not to now.

Ivy nodded; she was glad to hear that Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher were doing well. (Barnabas Beck could kick rocks, but she'd never had substantial problems with the Chief Constable.)

"You mean before we were neighbors?" Ivy said, tilting her head towards Jack's house. She didn't want his friend to think that she was twisting her arm, so she added, "I tutored him at Hogwarts. I work in law enforcement, too, so we kept in touch."

Duh, that was the obvious answer. Sometimes Daff just wasn't paying attention. She laughed at herself, and the other woman's blatant response. "I didn't know that." They hadn't been completely attached at the hip at school, being in different houses and all, but Daff supposed she hadn't even realized Jack had needed tutoring. Was she so disconnected, so wrapped up in her own life that she had stopped paying attention to Jack's? How terrible of her. Daff would have to foist her company upon him sooner rather than later.

"Oh? Do you work at the ministry?" Daff did know all of the constables by now, and Miss Sandow was not one of them, that much she was certain about.

Ivy smiled in a you caught me sort of expression. "I'm an auror," she admitted. She watched to see for a reaction. There typically was a reaction — not necessarily negative, but it was also not guaranteed to be positive, even when she was talking to a sunny woman with a basket of food.

"Oh wow!" Daff exhaled a breathless sort of exclamation. "That must be exciting." And dangerous. She couldn't imagine it, often worried about Jack just being a constable, but an auror, well that was another thing entirely! Miss Sandow must have been quite talented. "No wonder you survived tutoring, Jack. That must have been good preparation."

Exclamation certainly wasn't criticism; Ivy smiled at Miss Potts. "It's certainly something," she said, "But you're right — helping Jack with Potions was good preparation." She'd certainly gotten used to the smell of smoke — but Ivy was sure that he'd gotten better. She was a good tutor!

The chuckle that followed was unavoidable. " Sounds right," it was fine, he'd gotten there in the end. "Well, I appreciate you taking that for me and please help yourself, there really is plenty. I've got to get going," not that she'd told Elias she we coming, but he should just expect it by now.

Daff stepped back off the stoop with a smile. "It was nice to meet you, Miss Sandow." Now she had plenty to ensure another visit with Jack soon and lots to discuss!
