Stranger,

I'm assuming you haven't accidentally turned yourself into a bullfrog as a result of my instructions?

He toyed with the idea of sending back parchment with ink marks shaped like frog footprints, and only eventually decided against it when he realized he wasn't entirely sure he knew what frog footprints looked like. (That, and he wanted to talk to her more than he wanted to be cheeky — he'd been worried when the correspondence died off last month that he wouldn't hear from her again).

M,

That would certainly have been an interesting twist to last week, wouldn't it? I imagine if I had been a bullfrog, I'd be back to myself by now... but who's to say? It's not an experiment I've ever tried. Given how difficult I suppose it would be to navigate the floo network as a bullfrog, I can't say it's one I'm keen to try out, either.

I'll confess I didn't try your alteration. The timing worked in my favor, of course; not much in the way of early social obligations on Mondays and Tuesdays. I'll see how it suits next time — that whole week is already full of invitations, coming as it does right on the heels of the Hogwarts debut. Not a good week to squeeze in any extra hours of sleep.

How about you? Any reprieve from the long working hours and trouble sleeping, or more of the same?

With all the spinning one must do to navigate the floo network, I wouldn't recommend attempting to prove your theory. Mine is that you might spontaneously implode in that form with all that whirling.

Ah, the Hogwarts Debut Ball, I haven't been to that in quite some time, though I don't have much reason to.

Long working hours are a past time that come with the job, so naturally, the sleep that follows is usually of lower quality than one would wish.

M,

I was joking in the last letter, but I've thought about it more since then and I'm not sure that getting transfigured into a toad would be the worst thing in the world, for a few particular nights... If I had someone I could trust to do the spell and then turn me back later, of course. I don't suppose you're any good with transfiguration, my lady professor?

You're not missing much from the debut ball. It's the same every year. It's just an obligation to attend, for people like me... I don't have any reason to care about new debutantes, either, but if I made a habit of not going someone might remark on it, and I do have reason to keep people from having anything to talk about.

I'd say I have a talent for transfiguration, yes. However, it would take quite some convincing to persuade me to turn you into a toad.

What obligation would that be? Are you in debt to the headmaster? He doesn't seem like a man I would want to cross.
