Millie Potts would be an ideal candidate for both of these. As fellow Ravenclaws in the same year, they might even be aware of their similar expectations for OWLs, or at least notice a similar sense of drive/purpose in academics this year. Should he be a bookworm as well, or willing to repeat/listen to the gossip around school, he and Millie may have some predisposed bonding over shared interests.

Similarly, they could be too similar to be friends and be rivals instead, or something similar. A frenemy/competitive rivalry could do wonders for their academics this year, and mutually soften some of their social stubbornness. I'm open to any approach, but I do want some Ravenclaw common room threads!

Either way, I think Millie would notice Cad's looks and admire his determination, perhaps to the point of being a little intimidated. Which shouldn't stop Cad from trying to engage, I think we both know by now how Millie's shyness is only a small hurdle.
