I can offer Locke here (it'd fit the track record hmmm). 1890 was after his mistress passed so it could have either been something one night or a longer turn. He isn't engaged/married but for drama's sake, there could have been interference from his father preventing him from sticking around either known or unknown on his part. Or on the flip side, he would have kept the child himself if she wouldn't/couldn't/
