Where is father and brother are dark-haired, James is like his mother—fair-haired, light-eyed, and prone to burning after too much time spent in the sun. At five feet, seven inches tall he's not notably tall, but years as a mediwizard has helped him stay in shape. He likes the idea of staying clean-shaven and neat, but more often than not his stubble turns into a short beard. More often than not he can be found in his work robes, but while at home he dresses in decent but not especially fashionable clothes. He is left-handed.History:
1864 | James is born the second son to his parents, James and Annelise McKinnon. Despite being named after his father, his looks favor his mother—blond hair, blue eyes, and a perpetual scowl on his face.Personality:
1867 | The family is decorating their home for Christmas when an impatient six-year-old Arthur makes the candles light up in his first display of magic. His parents are delighted and spend the whole of Christmas Day recounting the tale to extended family and friends. Even at three-years-old James can see the difference in the treatment between him and Arthur; while James gets a single present (a book that nobody bothers to read with him that evening), Arthur gets three presents that he spends the night playing with.
1871 | At seven-years-old, James gets into a fight with ten-year-old Arthur a toy that they'd been told to share. Arthur wrap his arms around James and tries to drag him down to the ground to get the toy out of his hand, and in a rather aggressive first display of magic James sends Arthur flying backwards. His brother is absolutely fine, but you'd think James had killed him with the way his parents react. Arther is cooed at and coddled why James is chastened and lectured, as if he could help what happened! For the first time in his life James walks away from his parents with the distinct impression that they love him less. But why?
1872 | Arthur goes off to Hogwarts. James loves his brother, but he can't help but breathe a sigh of a relief to have him out of the home. His parents seem to pay him more attention while Arthur's gone, even if they spend way too much time talking about him... and writing to him... and reminding James that Arthur is going to do "so well" because he's their "smart boy".
1875 | James boards the Hogwarts Express with incoming-fourth-year Arthur and begins his first year. He's sorted into Gryffindor house—which his parents remind him "isn't Ravenclaw but still a good, decent house". He doesn't feel like he fits into the stereotypical Gryffindor image, but he enjoys the common room and thinks most of the other Gryffindors in his year are nice.
1877 | At the beginning of his third year James adds Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, and Earth Magi to his course load. He enjoys all of them, but really prefers his core classes—especially Transfiguration and Defence Against the Dark Arts.
1879 | Arthur graduates from Hogwarts, something which nobody doubted would happen from the moment Arthur received his OWL scores, and yet his family celebrates it like it's a national holiday. Arthur receives expensive gifts that James could only dream of receiving. He can't help but feel a little resentful. Nobody ever celebrated his accomplishments; instead, he's chastised when he fails to meet the expectations set by his older brother. It's even more difficult to bear when only a week after graduating Arthur receives a job offer from the Ministry. He continues on, though, prepared for his own fifth year of Hogwarts.
1880 | ... Which, for all intents and purposes, ends fairly well. He's confident in his OWL scores, even if he did find himself dozing off during his History of Magic examination (and when he nearly misses his Astronomy exam after oversleeping). When his results come in August, he expects his family to be happy. Four Os, two Es, two As, and only one P in History of Magic, a course he'd long deemed unnecessary for his future success. The rest of them, though? Os in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, and Transfiguration? Arthur didn't get an O in Transfiguraton. He tells himself all these things in the split second before his mother snatches the letter from him, and suddenly all of his fears come to life. Almost immediately his mother begins berating him for that single P, failing to acknowledge any of his successes and ranting on and on about how Arthur managed five Os, four Es, and only one A. Oh how he's failed her, after all they've sacrificed to give him an education. A P in History of Magic!? How could he!?
For the first time in his life, James really loses his temper—and regrets it almost immediately. He shouts at his mother, earning him a (in hindsight, well-deserved) slap to the face from his father. He leaves the house for hours, wandering the streets of Glasgow, allowing himself to give into the resentment and anger he's harbored for years. The house has calmed down by the time he returns, but the damage has apparently been done. His father explains how they cannot afford to send him to school. He's sure they can—they're poor but not dirt poor—but no amount of pleading or reasoning can change his mind. James has to get a job. At sixteen.
This, of course, isn't an easy task, especially while he's being compared to Ministry-employee Arthur with his fancy robes and "important duties" as an intern. He goes through the paperwork at the Ministry to get a license to perform magic as a working underage wizard. Even then it's not that easy—most "career" jobs won't take anyone under the age of seventeen. For the time he finds a job at an apothecary in London, which at least is far enough away from home that he doesn't have to be constantly reminded of his family.
1881 | His seventeenth birthday comes, and finally James is able to put his plans for his future into action. He applies as a mediwizard trainee at St. Mungo's and is hired. The job isn't easy, but it's a good distraction from his home life and gives him a sense of purpose. Even when witches and wizards die under his and his mentor's care the hope that he can help somebody the next day propels him forward. By the end of the year he is promoted to a full mediwzard.
1882 | The search for a roommate begins. He can't bear to be at home anymore, not when he comes home sweaty, grimy, and exhausted and his brother so squeaky clean and polished in his Ministry robes. The fact that his parents praise Arthur's work as "admirable" and "noble" and say nothing of his own does nothing to help the resentment that never seems to stop festering in his heart. By the summer he finds a suitable roommate on the far side of their London neighborhood, close enough to be familiar but far enough that he doesn't have to see his parents' home on the way to work.
1884 | When the laugh plague ravages Hogsmeade, James is called in to help and gets trapped within the quarantine zone. It sucks. Although he doesn't go out of the way to isolate himself from the others, James finds it difficult to make fast friends with Hogsmeade's mediwizards and healers and spends most of his free time isolating in his lodgings.
1885 | James' father passed suddenly in mid-winter. He remembers telling himself shortly after dropping out of Hogwarts that he wouldn't mourn the day his parents dies, and he doesn't—but not because he's angry. He doesn't get the proper chance to mourn, because neither Arthur nor his mother see fit to tell him about his father's passing until they put together the funeral arrangements. The two brothers have a screaming match in the middle of the London street, with Arthur claiming that he doesn't have time to deal with this, he has to take care of Mother since James can hardly afford to take care of himself. This is the final straw. Red-faced and glassy-eyed, James disapparated from in front of the family home and never goes back. Ever.
1886 | After packing up all his things, James moves to Hogsmeade. South of High Street exists a neighborhood called Pennyworth that he can afford to get a decent flat in. He shares it with two other men who work as odd of hours as he does, so they hardly see each other. James continues to work at St. Mungo's despite offers to move to the Hogsmeade branch; he can't deal with that much change at once.
1888 | During the Irvingly Fog Incident, James finds himself working around the clock to help those who aren't able to help themselves due to the lack of magic.
1891 | He is promoted to Unit Head of the mediwizards. His promotion unfortunately coincides with the landlord's decision to kick him and his flatmates out of their Pennyworth flat to allow family members to move in. He needs to find a new place to live.
Quiet. Intense. Analytical. Quick on his feet. Gets easily frustrated when other people act before thinking or allow their emotions to rule their lives. Protective. Resentful. Doesn't mind hurting other people's feelings with the truth. Hates being underestimated.Other:
