FAO: Spinster Seeking Someone

Dear Madame,

I am no longer young and not much of a gentleman.  I possess wealth enough but am often accused of having little refinement.  I seek a tolerable companion to soften my own edges and see out my life in an amicable situation with a lady.

Regards,
Unmarried Older Gent.

Dear —,

Thank you for your letter. I have no earthly idea whether I should make a tolerable companion for anyone, but I am an optimist at the worst of times, so! You say you are not so young – forgive me being too impertinent to a stranger, but were you never married previously? If so, why not?

Not that I could possibly judge. I did call myself a spinster, after all.

Yours, maybe,
A. R.

Dear A. R.

I cannot judge Miss, as I am also not known to be the most pleasant companion. I believe I have redeeming qualities which are perhaps not visible on first inspection -I believe I am an acquired taste. As to why I never married, I have a large family and have always been surrounded by children and never felt the absence of my own. In the spirit of additional honest, I am a man of 50, and excellent fortune, such as might keep a wife in good comfort.

Why might a young lady such as yourself find themselves turning to the letters to explore the potential of a husband?

Best
B.P
