Appearance:
Sutton is a petite creature, standing at barely 5’ 1”. Her build is on the slim side, boasting few curves. Delicate in features, she resembles her mother more than her father (thank goodness!) with round, expressive brown eyes and long lashes that sit atop high cheekbones. Her skin is unblemished and lighter than that of her ancestors. Fine black hair falls around her shoulders with a subtle wave. It is always swept back into the latest styles, though she is tender-headed, so as soon as she gets home from an evening out, she lets it fall or puts it into a simple plait. Sutton carries herself with the grace of a refined debutante, after a year of finishing school, but it is sometimes with hesitancy. She does not relish in taking up too much space like her younger sister. She dresses in the most fashionable silhouettes of New York, but is curious about the styles of London and Paris now that she is overseas. She does tend to tame her dresses to have a little less flare than that of her mother or aunties. Sutton prefers warmer colors, pinks, reds and peaches, but the shades range from muted to bright. The one thing she does like to indulge in is jewelry, though not bold in shape, she does like brighter jewels, pearls and simple fine chains. Her true weakness is a good tiara, every occasion presents the opportunity for a new one and she has quite the collection. She is left-handed.
History:
1874 Born the third child and first girl to Porter and Celeste Holbrook of New York, her birth is a joyous event and she proves to be a mostly easy babe, if a poor sleeper. Sutton joins older brothers Desmond and Benson into the prestigious Holbrook family. Despite their different ethnicities, Porter and Celeste have never had a problem raising their children in both cultures. Both families have been in the Americas for a few generations, adopting more “American” names, though keeping some of her mother’s South Korean culture in their home and customs.
Her father owns a large magical tobacco farm in the Adirondacks. The crops are nestled in the mountains in upstate New York, of which the valley is magically charmed to provide the correct growing environment for the tobacco.1875 Less than a year later, in June, another girl is born, to be named Leighton. She is Sutton’s opposite in every way; loud, demanding and very much the center of attention. This only becomes more apparent as they age though the sisters remain pretty close. The children grow up spending their time alternating between the city and the mountains, their very loyal and patient governess traveling with them wherever the family goes. 1885 - 1892
IlvermornySutton follows her brothers to Ilvermorny where she is chosen by the Pukwudgie and given her wand, 9 inches of American beech with a Wampus whisker core. It is said that Pukwudgie favors the heart and healers. Sutton has no grand delusions about becoming a healer, but she does care deeply for people and is a good listening ear, so perhaps her healing is of the emotional variety. Her schooling is largely normal, though she prefers more theoretical classes to physical ones. Charms quickly becomes a favorite both in theory and in practice and she grows quite talented in them, despite not enjoy too many of her other academic classes She dabbles in Divination, but never seriously and never with any real results; she does enjoy tarot and tea leaf readings. 1892 - 1893
Finishing SchoolUpon graduation, Sutton chooses a year of finishing school, despite the fact that Leighton will be graduating and ready to debut herself. The sisters have generally been close and Leighton would also like to do a year of finishing before her debut as she is less inclined to participate in the season as Sutton is. 1893
DebutSutton debuts in a grand ball in New York City in June. Everything is quite splendid, but her first season does not produce anything on the courting or marriage front. She is quietly relieved, hoping having Leigh on her side next summer helps things go better. 1894
HogsmeadeWith Leighton freshly debuted in New York, one of Sutton’s dear friends is offered to stay in the Wellingtonshire home of an extended relative and invites Sutton, Leighton, their mother and a few other friends along for the trip. Their friend has her eye on a man she met during his stay in New York and the rest of them are collateral damage… June 1894
Misses & Matrons
Mishaps & Mayhem... and their Mamas’ (or maybe her friend's Sutton isn't sure) first order of business is to get cheeky and mess with the dance cards for the Misses & Matron’s Spellcraft Ball, hoping to secure their daughters some foreign husbands. It’ll be fine.
Personality:
POLISHED | ARTISTIC | ROMANTIC | GUARDED
Sutton is everything the older sister is supposed to be, right? Finished, well-educated, musically-inclined, speaks French, demure; these are all the things a husband should want right? It should be, but Sutton still finds herself lacking the right amount of courage to make it happen. She can take a while to open up to people, but is ready to always lend a listening ear. Not one to gossip, she will keep secrets held fast, unless she thinks someone is in danger of some kind. She loves to paint and this is where her true passion shows through her brush strokes and in her poetry; the latter of which she never shares with anyone. Once she is comfortable around people she is quick to laugh and make a witty (if quiet!) remark, but it takes a while to break down her walls and get behind the Darling Debutante Facade. She knows everyone is judging them here in Scotland, and Sutton is not as quick to make herself stand out like Leighton or their friends with their typical “American” behavior. She wants to be a little more adventurous, to break out of her shell, but still has no idea how to go about that.
