History: Edward Carter was born into the pure-blooded Carter family on the 12th of May, 1846. The Carters lived on the outskirts of Godric's Hollow, on an estate which was protected with the Fidelius Charm and thus invisible and unapproachable by those who did not know it's exact location. Edward exhibited first signs of magical ability when he made a stick figure he had drawn move when he was just 4 years old in 1850.
The Carters are an middle-class family which made its fortune through the arts; painting magical portraits has been a family tradition for generations upon generations, and the Carter painters are renowned for their detailed and precise work. Edward would follow the family tradition as well and his father began instructing him in painting when he was only 6 years old, in 1852. By the time he had began his education at Hogwarts - where he was sorted into Ravenclaw - in 1857, Edward had already become an adept painter. Next to the arts, he also displayed a particular aptitude in charms and dueling, in which the materials his wand is made of likely played no small part. Edward continued honing his skills in Charms, while also taking a liking to Transfiguration, Ancient Studies and Defence Against the Dark Arts. He achieved high O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. results in all of these subjects and remained highly interested and active in dueling and charms after his Hogwarts years aswell. He also served as a member of the Committee on Experimental Charms, published a few books about charms and magical theory in general and would occasionally give lectures on charms throughout Britain.
After attaining his N.E.W.Ts in 1864, Edward was pretty much set to inherit his father's atelier in Godric's Hollow, and he looked forward to it. All the years of mixing paint, all the summers spent helping his father out and all the clothing ruined by paint splotches would finally pay off, and so it did. Business was booming, as the Carters' reputation helped Edward greatly in attracting new customers and keeping the old ones around. However, he felt increasingly discouraged still living with his parents and having his father breathing down his neck whenever he was working, so he was ecstatic to learn of the founding of Hogsmeade in 1877. Seeing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start anew in the new settlement, he packed his bags and was among the first settlers of Hogsmeade, opening up a 2nd, smaller atelier there.
His happiness and joy were, however, short-lived, as photography was becoming more and more popular even throughout the Wizarding World, and business decreased. After all, why would anyone want to sit still for hours and hours on end for a portrait if they could just have their picture taken and ready within a few minutes? With his financial situation becoming more and more unstable, Edward was forced to consider new ways of bringing in the galleons. Luckily, a teaching spot had become available at Hogwarts in one of his favourite subjects in June 1890 - Charms. He decided to try his luck and applied and, thankfully, got the job.
Nowadays, Edward spends most of his time at Hogwarts as a professor, however still paints on the side, splitting his time between his ateliers in Hogsmeade and Godric's Hollow.
