Appearance: Though her childhood diet might lead one to believe that she would be thin and malnourished Betsy’s work has afforded her the opportunity to develop a fairly full figure and left her quite a bit curvier than her siblings. She shares her blonde hair and blue eyes with some of her siblings, stands at 5’4, always has flour under her fingernails and carries the aroma of butter everywhere she goes. Her robes are old but well kept, her sleeves permanently pushed up for practicalities sake – and inadvertently revealing the few burn scars she had already sustained – and she would dearly love to be able to wear her hair down in public just as she always does at home.

History:
1862: Elizabeth Jayne is born the fifth child of Maybelle Cooper and spends the first few years of her life blissfully unaware of how difficult the rest of it will probably be.

1864: Ulysses gets into difficulty and robs the family of some of their precious funds – Betsy doesn’t know a thing about it at the time but later she will hear stories and come to blame her father for her own lack of opportunities.

1866: Vic goes to Hogwarts and this Betsy does remember. In fact it is probably her first real memory and it is entirely tinged with sadness as, till this point, Vic has acted more as a caregiver than Maybelle. At Christmas she catches Dragon Pox, along with her father and siblings, and whilst the latter all recover Ulysses perishes. Betsy remains unaware but IS pleased to see Vic again, even if she is also introduced to Matthew for the first time. She hates him.

1867: But not as much as she temporarily hates Fidelity for usurping her as the baby of the family, however it does lead her to perform magic for the first time, born entirely of anger.

1868-1869: Trent gets into trouble and, in a quick succession of years Betsy goes from being hopeful that she may get to go to Hogwarts as Vic had, even for just a little while, to sure she will never so much as see the castle when first Nathan and then Warren receive their letters to no avail. Kathy also leaves the house and Betsy feels a terrible certainty that soon enough Vic will leave her too.

1871: Hot on the heels of Christian being born Trent ends up very temporarily in jail.

1872: When he returns home, and because whilst she didn’t particularly take to Matthew, she is scared of Thomas for reasons she can’t quite explain, she and Trenton attempt to run away. They don’t get especially far and Betsy very quickly discovers that the world is a terrible place to be a child almost entirely alone: at ten and twelve they last for only a few days before hunger and cold force them to come home from their little adventure. Betsy resolves that the next time she leaves she will have somewhere to go.

1873: As she had long suspected the family do not have the money to send Betsy to Hogwarts and despite having a tremendous sulk about it she does not get to attend. Over the years she will attempt to make her final peace with this decision but she never truly lets go of this particular chip on her shoulder.

1874: Betsy gets a job in the village bakery, beginning as little more than a maid and dogsbody, but soon she begins to develop an interest and the owner eventually allows her to become an apprentice alongside his son.

1876: Thomas dies in a brawl and Betsy is secretly glad. Over the last year his eyes had begun to follow her a little more than she would have liked and she feels little more than relief that she no longer has to sleep in the same house as him.

1877: Vic and Warren leaves for the newly established village of Hogsmeade and Betsy is tries to make the best of being left behind with her mother. If her employer had ever hoped for an attachment to form between Betsy and his son then he might have briefly thought himself triumphant when Betsy begins to spend more and more time with Ethan and less away from work than ever before.

1878: Matthew returns to the family hope and in a fit of majestic pique Betsy loses her virginity to Ethan and immediately regrets it when he declares himself in love with her. She is so shocked by her own behaviour, and his reaction, that she complies with his suggestion that they should court properly. She doesn’t dislike him as such but other than the recklessness that drove her to his bed there is nothing that compels her towards him other than the fact that it would be so blissfully easy. She lasts all of three weeks before his renewed attempts to get her into bed make her jittery and she leaves the job she has loved so much after very sweetly convincing her employer to write her a reference for her next one.

1880: Fidelity and Christian also migrate to Hogsmeade, and with them and her other siblings gone she somehow finds herself as the lone observer in her mother’s tumultuous life with Matthew.

1886: Betsy moves in with Vic and Le in June, having finally had enough of living with her mother, and as a result of her additional pay they are able to move into a nicer house – they are all immediately happier and Betsy loves playing with her little niece. She finds a job at a magical bakery in Salem Square and comes alive there.

1888: Though happy enough with her living conditions Betsy is beginning to long for something to call her own and so, armed with cake and a smile, she decides to branch out in the world.

Personality: Optimistic and sunny despite her shaky upbringing Betsy is an aggressively positive person who throws herself into anything and everything that will keep her occupied when her thoughts begin to darken. Practical and helpful, after a lifetime of living with her mother she is frankly grateful to have a bit of breathing space and thoroughly enjoys being able to stamp out a new life for herself around new people. Though occasionally prone to fits of melancholy and more manipulative than people give her credit for Betsy is charming, effervescent and dedicated to her work.

Other:
She makes the best tarts you’ve ever tasted.
She is bisexual but doesn’t know it yet.
